Not starting negotiations during the off season, talking up JBD and Thomson previously, looking to add another top 4 D which doesn’t look possible under next years cap. Doesn’t matter now, he is signed. Good job.
I guess we see signs differently. At no point after his initial year did I think Dorion was letting Zub walk..

Right now, as of today, Chychrun is the 64th highest paid d at 4.6.

There are a few RFA and UFA that might pass him, and a few that currently makeorr but might sign for less, so he'll probably end up around 70, but the point stands, he's not paid like a low end 4th d.

He's being paid in line with what he is,
Fair enough i womder how many players get new contracts next season that are 4.6 or hugher. D men in that range that are actually good at eating 20 + minutes are the best value signings out there.

There's definitely a few guys that could break 4.6 particularly if they aren't bridged. Drysdale and K'andre Miller, for example. There's also guys like Severson who probably get more, a d guys like E.Johnson that drop out.

Damn first morning waking up with zub not an Ottawa senator because
A. Was gonna hit the open market for 6-7 million
B. Ottawa isn’t California
C. Fans were mean to Zaitsev his fellow countryman.

In terms of injuries were around the 10th most impacted teams

This site does a good job of looking at the impact in multiple ways

Interesting but it is based on the players cap hits. I would argue that Zub and Stü leave bigger holes in our roster than their current cap hits would suggest.

If you put in next years cap hit for those two players we would be the most impacted team on the same list!

"Achieved" doing a lot of work here. He did what he had no choice to do, and it probably should have been done before the season started which might have attracted that #4 D we obviously needed before we had yet another lost season(or close to being lost as of now).

It's a nice signing regardless, but let's not act like this is a great achievement by PD.
Any doofus on this board could have done it, including me!

I feel like our prospect pool is only "bare" because we've done an effective job getting the really good ones into the pro league, and only really busted with Logan Brown. It's almost what successful prospect development looks like.

When I think of a bare prospect pool though, I think of what we had in 2010 with Jim O'Brien as our top prospect, and Joshua Hennessy as 4th or something; this being the year Karlsson graduated of course. I like Sokolov, Greig, Crookshank, and even Lodin as better forward prospects than JOB. I think JBD is going to be top 4D for us as well.

OT I know... but this thread is going in that direction now though haha.
I have highest hopes and expectations for Greig. I hope Bernard-Docker, Thomson, Ostakschuk and Boucher make it to the NHL as regular players, but my expectations are mixed. I doubt that Sokolov, Crookshank, Lodin ever make it. Our prospect pool is now weak due to recent graduations and the trade for Debrincat. Hopefully the 2023 pick will be a VG one and not a reach.

Nice bit of work here, got the team pretty much locked now save for DBC.

Looking forward to getting guys back and see what we’re about.

Low key looking forward to seeing JBD back in the line up as I have some medium high hopes for him :)

Weegar will be getting a pay raise that will exceed it too I believe.

I agree on all except Crookshank. Think he's a 3rd line player for us.

He was skating with Larsson at practice, which would normally suggest he isn't quite ready, but they may have been giving JBD the rotations with Chabot in case Zub isn't ready knowing that if Zub is good to go he'll slot right in without a problem while JBD can use the reps.

Zub reminds me a lot of Sergei Zubov - russian spelling of the Ukrainian last name in russian church slavonic manner. Zubov was just an average d-man in the USSR league for 4 seasons. But figured out NHL pretty fast. Instead of being a classical soviet school defenceman, who always makes that first pass out of the zone. He started to do second or a third pass, joining the attack, by not being a puck transporter. And used his ability to pass on the PP. Nothing spectacular, just slow down the play, establish control with slow passing. With a lot of patience to create that opportunity to score. I wish Zub would just figure this out as well, because he has all the tools in the world to be a very effective point getter. And be paired with Chabot, Sanderson or Brannstrom on the PP unit.
