Zub reminds me a lot of Sergei Zubov - russian spelling of the Ukrainian last name in russian church slavonic manner. Zubov was just an average d-man in the USSR league for 4 seasons. But figured out NHL pretty fast. Instead of being a classical soviet school defenceman, who always makes that first pass out of the zone. He started to do second or a third pass, joining the attack, by not being a puck transporter. And used his ability to pass on the PP. Nothing spectacular, just slow down the play, establish control with slow passing. With a lot of patience to create that opportunity to score. I wish Zub would just figure this out as well, because he has all the tools in the world to be a very effective point getter. And be paired with Chabot, Sanderson or Brannstrom on the PP unit.

Zubov was one of the best offensive defenceman in the NHL for a long time. Outside of the Z and both being Russian I don’t really see the comparison

How is his shot?

Zub's still out, lower body injury but the only detail given is that he has a limp. JBD was sent down because Zaitsev is back.
So we sent him down with only 6 healthy d? What's the plan if someone catches the flu or gets hit with a puck in warmup?

I know this board absolutely loves Zub.. but I think you guys all over rate him. He's ok but in my honest opinion, he's just an average defensive d-man.

He's no magician stickhandler, and I've seen him give the puck away in dangerous areas when pressured. He's not fast or overly physical. He's reliable and gets the puck out of the zone most of the time. But I've also seen him get caught because of a lack of speed and maneuverability.

He was a free gift from the KHL so I am glad he's on our team and he helps our top 4. But I am not as impressed as most of this board is. Anyway, I might be out to lunch on this one.

He's not Nick Lidstrom or anything, he's just a good stay at home defenseman who always seems to make the right play and very seldomly makes mistakes.

I dont think people overrate him around here, just appreciate him for what he is.

A very good number 4.

Maybe that's your own expectations that are off a bit.

Zub is a great D partner. He's calm and predictable. That's exactly what you want paired with a guy that is more of an offence thinker.

D men rarely are magician stickhandlers. It's not really how they spend their practice time. Zub wins his fair share of battles and moves the puck.

D men are going to get caught a bit flat footed. They're going to get beat from time to time. This is the NHL and they're playing against world class players. Zub doesn't get beat clean very frequently

And he's also a complimentary top 4 guy. Our pair anchors are all lefties. What they need in a partner is predictability and a guy that enables them to drive offence

He’s cheap and he plays in the top four.

That is the basis for my excitement.

I'd peg him as a very good #4, but capable of slotting anywhere. In the mold of a right shot Seidenberg/Hjalmarsson?

An important piece on a cup run.

I agree. I think it's important to understand & appreciate defensive pairings and how one defender's attributes compliments his partner's. He doesn't have to the best defender, but if he works well with his partner and together they play well, then that's a good result and a good player to have.

I think for players beyond their ELCs it is a pretty competitive wage.

I imagine he could get $5M on the open market.

Yeah that sounds about right, but it's tough to say. Not a lot of teams let good RHD go without re-signing. But then again, that would drive the price up if he was available this year.

There's only about a dozen or so guys on ELC getting top 4 mins. 4.6 is being paid like a good #3 Dman, which I think is pretty fair for Zub

Zub is awesome and needed, but he is looking like he’s playing banged up right now.

He is usually a lot more aggressive in his board battles.

Such a great find by the team, and such a great calming presence for our D squad.
