I truly believed that we did not prioritize signing him because Chychrun was management's number 1 target in off-season. When that derailed, Zub became clear answer. I am aware others have reported it was Zub's camp that delayed talks but I do not believe that as the case.

With this term and pricetag, Chychrun could still very much be a possibility still. Or another solid defender.

Also means we could very well keep DeBrincat as well.

What is that, less than 24 hour from when he said otherwise? :biglaugh:
agreed

I think Ottawa realized that JBD and Thomson are not as good as they first thought. Even if they got Chychrun they were probably hoping one of those guys would play a role

You know, I'm starting to wonder if Dorion really is as incompetent as some of you keep saying. What a great deal for the team and an important piece of the puzzle locked up during, what should be, our competitive cycle.

I think it's pretty clear who he used to get his information from.
No it's not, it's made up here, he's just another journalist & he got this one wrong. They have their sources & sometimes their sources are wrong. Any tips he gets is usually what the team wants to give him, a source or other journalists.

It also reduces the number of spots that will open up on defence for next yr & now maybe they only need one of those guys instead of both. IMO they still need a young top 4 RD.

This has nothing to do with what Dorion thought about JBD or Thomson. The ball was always in Zub's court on whether or not he wanted to test out free agency. Dorion would have loved to have signed him long term last time but he couldn't outright say that Zub wanted to a chance to test UFA as soon as possible.

I guess you can say good on Dorion for creating an atmosphere where he wanted to stick around.

Assen na yo!

Good AAV, and contract length is nice too. Thought they might do more years but this is a good mix of money and term.

Meh, he's fine! He's an 8 million dollar defenseman.

There are 9-10-11 million dollar defenseman out there. There will be 12-13 million dollar defenseman before his contract is done.

He's fine as an 8m signed long term. It's saying he's a #1 but not competing for a Norris.
And worst case if not, he's easily tradable and will come at a decent price, so nothing to worry about at all.

Not gonna lie, fully didn't think this was gonna happen. Our resident Russian insider had me sold on him leaving.
@SENATOR did your boy lie to you?

Does this feel like one of the most important signings in Senators history to anyone else?

Losing Zub at this juncture of the rebuild would have been devastating and possibly KO.

Also really happy Zub loves Ottawa and signed to a sweet heart contract. What a beaut.

Exactly what he should have been signed for, good deal. The notion some had that he would get closer to $6M was ludicrous. Glad he's staying for 4 more years
