Canucks are not looking good, but many already thought they were in recession. I know I did, as I figured when they lost in the final that they would be in striking distance of the Cup for another couple of seasons.

If they could not do it then with players in their prime, is the same roster going to succeed under Tortorella? Something tells me no.
I can think of Santorelli as a new player who looks good, but it's mostly the same old crew.

Soccer does. And huge tournaments. I hate the shootout for both but to say no sport does isn't exactly accurate.

Just have it end as a tie like they used to and they split the 2 points. No need to go to 3 points but then again the 3 point system was not implemented to improve the game, it was done as a way to drive revenue so for that it has been pretty successful

Soccer does it because some tiebreaker is needed and it's better than tossing a coin - no one would ever get the idea to decide league games by penalties just to avoid ties (well, to go in line with the other major sports, the MLS actually did try it - but they scrapped it soon after). So reintroducing ties really would be the best solution in my opinion, but Americans seemingly don't like ties.

All you are really doing is convolutions things further in my view, easiest thing is to scrap OTL and only award a point for winning in the shootout. Shootout loses some impact in the standings and we clearly which teams are better by record. This isn't international soccer, it should clear how win and losses are determined and what the results are, you are rewarded for a win, you are not rewarded for winning.

So pretty much everybody agrees that winning a shootout is not the same as winning in regulation - so the same goes for losing. And what I don't get is the argument of making things "complicated" and best to just go W-L. What is simpler than points? IMO it's far easier with points than winning percentages. But most importantly the standings should reflect the strength of the teams. Changing the system just to make it "easier" but sacrificing the quality of it is bad.

It's still hysterical that Canucks fans thought Torts would put them over the top.

Tons of time left in that Ottawa game.

Methinks the Caps, Devs, and Isles might be building a mountain a bit too tall to climb. Need to start seeing some of these teams drop out to feel comfortable.

Yeah I think the Caps are just a ****show...it's too late in the season to be playing so inconsistently like they are and they have a hard March schedule against a lot of top teams in the West. They just can't keep relying so much on Ovechkin to score goals and Oates handled their goalie situation horribly, Kolzig has completely ****ed up Holtby, and Oates' roster decisions are terrible. Oates is a bad coach so far at least and his insistence on making players play a certain side because of their handedness is ridiculous

Devs probably just don't have the offense to stick with it...maybe if they had ridden Schneider all season long instead of splitting him with Brodeur, but it's looking like they might just fall short. Every game is a slog for them it seems like and grinding out loser points isn't enough.

Isles are toast.

e: I think the Canucks have a massive number of injuries at the moment and that's probably their biggest problem, but it also seems that Tortorella rode his top line way too much and the Sedins are burned out and playing injured now, and they don't have the depth to compensate, especially with the injuries

The worst part about the caps is they have so much offensive talent (Backstrom, MJ, Grabovski, Green, Carlson, etc.) yet, when they get a power play or even offensive zone pressure, they force feed Ovechkin. You can actually see them forcing plays through, looking at him. It's absurd. And what's worse, is that the Rangers are one of the few teams that really notices this and puts guys to shadow Ovechkin. There's a reason we are dominant against them.

This is on the coach and probably on AO's ego as well. What a mess. It's quite honestly hard to watch such an inept game plan.

I find it hard to blame Ovechkin, he is exceedingly good at scoring goals, he should be shooting all the time when his teammates pass him the puck. I doubt he's standing there in the locker room yelling at everyone to pass him the puck, I think his linemates are just being dumb about it.

Though it wouldn't surprise me if Oates is telling them to feed Ovechkin and do nothing else

I think that when you have a coach that has the composure of me in a game day thread, you have a problem. So glad Torts is gone.

Good that you can make a joke at your own expense, haha - thanks.

And I'm with you. Let Tortorella be someone else's problem. It's so strange because Vancouver is the politest city I've ever, ever been to. Nice to a fault.

Why the **** is Pittsburgh/Buffalo on for rivalry night? The ****? So beat. I don't want to watch the Buffalo Sabres, NBCSN.

Was wondering the same thing dude, why is Buffalo always on NBC Sports?

No clue. I can't wrap my head around it. Why would they regularly televise one of the worst offensive teams in quite some time? It's not like Buffalo is Chicago or New York or anything, it's ****ing Buffalo.

Are your jimmies rustled, sir?
