I feel insane but I would much rather the Islanders win this series. AV and his smug face winning in Philly would be straight up terrible.

Trotz is the new Jacques Lemarie though. Ruining hockey one system at a time.

Lose los situation.
I was glad the Rangers replaced AV but I don’t have any bad feelings for him. I think I’m rooting for the Phillies in that series. Gun to my head.

It's an absolutely horrible trade for the Pens. Dubas hosed Rutherford.

15OA for Kapanen, by itself, is awful.

But to give up Hallander and Rodriques, a top prospect and a capable Bottom 6 guy, on top of that for waiver wire fodder?

Bruh...
The timing is risky, a stud could certainly fall to 15OA, but Kapanen is absolutely worth a first rounder. Maybe not a top ten pick. But like many trades that appear, on first blush, to be steals, this will probably be viewed a lot differently in 7 or 8 months.

This is the transactional version of a “trap game”.

another finesse soft player is what NYR does not need. maybe someone like Domi or Mantha someone that fills a need. more skilled physical players are needed. another of this pond hockey crap. 4th line upgrade as well and will Fast be resigned or his right's traded at the draft?
Kapanen doesn’t strike me as a soft player.

They're in a tough spot. Can't rebuild with Crosby and Malkin on the team.
Exactly. With those two they probably have three more reasonable cracks at the Cup. If they get one more everything is gravy.

Not in the exact same way, but I suspect JG is going to be overpaying for “his guy” a time or two down the line.

The Rangers are not going to be making wholesale trades. I could see one or perhaps two complimentary moves but the laundry lists of 4/5 trades are not going to happen. I like that we discuss a lot of different players but let’s be realistic, there’s no way the Rangers can bring in that much payroll and no one is going to be lining up to trade us young talent. It’s probably pick one solid acquisition, move out at least one, maybe two veterans and let’s the cards fall where they may.
I suspect JG has a short list of guys he wants. Those guys are north-south, durable, gritty, but skilled. And on ELCs or extremely team-friendly deals for whom her will overpay.
I may be projecting, but it seems JG has a plan and he's slowly-but-surely accumulating his pieces.

(A 1OA and a 2OA really stuck a ticket on his plan, too)

Id prefer to figure it out than buyout anyone. Dead cap space bothers the heck out of me.
Me too. This had better be the front office's MO going forward. I think the Kreider deal is borderline but they must avoid the UFA contract aside from stars. Let other teams pay those guys.

He's European, so he's automatically soft. Get with the program, Egel
I’ve been so impressed with Dallas (which is almost completely Euro) and probably the baddest team left. Not fight-wise, just tough. They’re like “Hit me. Hit me again”. Savages.

Just shows you how backwards some people's line of thought is. People talk about sexism and racism in hockey, but xenophobia is a massive issue as well

I don’t think xenophobia is a “massive” issue. It’s definitely an issue, but moreso with fans and some of the remaining old school management types that still have jobs somehow.

I always found the player stereotypes really interesting. Growing up in the 80s, the stereotypical Russian for me was Ivan Drago. Russians were scary, super tough people who were impossible to break. It’s strange, and obviously incorrect, that Russian hockey players somehow became associated with finesse and relative unfitness for the playoffs.

That trade is probably the purest example of relative value I’ve seen. Yes, in a vacuum it’s a bad deal for Pittsburgh. It’s not a vacuum though, and in the context of where the organization is right now, 1st round picks and 20-year old prospects hold less value to them than they do for most teams.

What happened there really is that Rutherford shopped that pick around, and Kapanen was the best player available for it. Since the pick holds little value for him, and the player is a good player, the trade does make sense from his perspective. No matter what, Kapanen is more valuable to him than 15oa.
