good chance he signs in Florida. I believe he has a house, wife, and child there. The hiring of coach Q, his rookie coach, is gonna be another big draw too.

For the Panthers to sign both Panarin and Bobrovsky they would have to reconfigure the rest of their team's cap structure kind of in a way like the Blackhawks have. They already have a large number of bigger ticket contracts and would probably have to cut some bait. Some of that might be easy--I don't believe Luongo is on a 35+ contract and if that is so if he retired they wouldn't be on the hook for his three remaining years. Hoffman might have to go for them to be able to fill out their roster with cheaper contracts--maybe even Pysyk or Vatrano. They have some good talent coming but I don't think they're overly deep in it.

If the Panthers do all that they'll have a 3 year window until the next Barkov and Trocheck contracts come around and Barkov for sure will make a lot more with his next contract. They could become a very good team but things will probably be tight and their ability to keep or add other players will be much harder.

Despite our tendencies to look to the future when it comes to contract issues, I feel like teams that believe they can contend, generally do whatever they have to, to fit what they need under the cap without fear of how it will play out in the future.

We saw that with the Rangers year in, year out. We see it with Toronto now. I wouldn't be surprised to see it in Florida.

Bobrovsky and Panarin should put Florida in a much better place and I would think they would make Florida a playoff team for next few years anyway. Not sure I see them as a major contender though. A year like this year though and everything is up for grabs--so I wouldn't say they'd have no chance. It's not just having great players--you have to have good management, the coaching (and stability helps), depth, player development and good drafting. All that is stuff that their cross state rivals the Lightning have had in place for years. The coaching will be there (I would think anyway) with Quenneville--the other areas are questionable right now. I like Denisenko and Borgstrom. I'm not so sure about Tippett. It's easy making draft choices like Ekblad, Barkov and Huberdeau--a little bit harder when you're not picking high all the time. Things also are different for cap ceiling teams. A major mistake or two and your ability to manage that can be very much compromised. Dale Tallon IMO is not a great general manager.

I mean, I'm not disagreeing with you. Everything you're saying is correct.

Still, I think you might be underestimating slightly two key factors:

1. The (excessive in my opinion) parity in the league gives GM's/President's/Owner's, etc. the feeling that they can win in any given year. Which is basically true and becomes less stupid with each passing year.

2. GM's generally have a running clock. Tallon has been GM for 9 years. That's too long. If he can't put together a competitive squad in a year or two, he's likely finished there. I doubt he cares much about cap implications 4-5 years from now. Very similar to how Nill has managed Dallas. I don't think he cares about mortgaging the future for Zucc. He needs results.

Luongo’s contract does qualify for recapture penalties if he retires.

What I personally like from JD is his patience and ability to stick to a plan. No knee jerk reactions. No revolving doors. He will bear the brunt of criticism and let his GM work towards his vision. That's what you need from a President, let other people do their jobs. That means you don't micromanage or flip flop.

Look at the flyers. The president always giving mandates, timelines, changing course.

I would like to see more of a process and search for more candidates. I don't object to JD so much as the way this was about identifying one person and sticking with that. You had over a month based on CBJ advancing. Use that time to inform your choices.

Good post and just another reason I think someone with a huge ego like Messier would be an awful choice.

Clutterbuck is seriously f***ed up.

Stress fracture, rotated vertebrae, two slipped discs, pinched nerve,” is how Clutterbuck rambled off the things that are wrong during Monday’s breakup day on Long Island. “A couple things that need to be addressed in there, so I’ll go see a couple specialists and go from there.”

The 31-year-old known for his aggressive, physical style, said the options range from diskectomy, which would keep him out four-to-six weeks, to a spinal fusion, which could be four-to-six months. With three more years left on his deal with an annual salary-cap hit of $3.5 million, he has already spoken to doctors about the viability of continuing to play in the NHL — but he’s far from that point right now.

“On the worse end, it’s not considered to be career-threatening,” Clutterbuck said. “There are some changes I would have to make, just the way I felt and range of motion and stuff. But that’s a long way down the road.

Shame the Bruins got through, but at least the Bluejackets can look forward to an exciting and fruitful offseason...

They only have a 3rd round and a 7th round for this year’s draft. Most likely going to lose Panarin and Bobrovsky. So...

They have to go hard in free agency / depend on some of the farm guys to develop heavily if they want to maintain the playoff runs.

If they keep Duchene it's a good start, he would replace what they had in Johansen, they already have Seth Jones, and Dubios is a hell of a player. Keep Atkinson and Foligno and let them run this team... They need to slowly move out some of these older non productive guys like Dubinsky, but they aren't in need of the draft picks right now.

They would be wise to sell the UFA rights of some of their players to other teams...

A Boston Globe Bruins beat writer said the principal point of contact was the chest

This is at least a 1 game suspension. NHL f***ed the call so badly that they have to make up for it. It should be 2 games at least IMO but NHL won't do it

Then he retweeted this from Kerry Fraser

Someone is having a hearing today. The NHL disagrees.

Go Canes.

Not taking things away from Bishop because he did what he needed

but Game 7 Rangers/Lightning was hands down one of the most toothless and worthless performances I have ever seen from this team lol
For sure it was. Playing with 3 dmen who could barely move and one with a unusable shoulder probably didn't help much.

Hintz didn’t skate this morning.

He has a lower issue. Hintz blocked a shot in the first period in game 5.

Great. Ugh. He's been a flying beast all playoffs for them. Hopefully the boot is really really just precautionary.
