how are we supposed to take any if this seriously when there are only 4 defensemen among the 4 teams? i don't know what it is, but it ain't hockey.
No one expects anyone to take all starvweekend seriously. It's a goof around event aimed at kids and sponsors.

i love this trade! canucks may have best top 9 in west with lindholm they have a goalie who can steal a series. they may well be best team in west in the end, no matter how obnoxious their fanbase can be. and calgary got full value here. they weren't resigning him and they got in addition to the obligatory 1st and raondo prospect, a overate prospect with still potentially nice upside and reclamation project in kuzmenko they can potentially rehabilitate value on and flip for more assets. everybody wins! until canucks get knocked out by a wild card team and the ohl legend prospect flops. either way, so much fun for us! i love this trade!!!
Meh. Vancouver doesn't scare me, my hope is that the Blues can get the pacific wild card spot and play Vancouver in the 1st round. I think our roster can grind them down and bully em out in the 1st round, they are soft.

I also think the Blues have a decent shot at a 1st round upset against Dallas. Those are the only 2 teams I think we could beat. Everyone else steamrolls us.

Pierre Luc Dubois has certainly built an impressive list of coaches that have been fired while he was with each team.

- John Tortorella, fired from the Blue Jackets in 2021
- Paul Maurice, fired himself from the Jets in 2022
- Todd McLellan, fired from the Kings in 2024

That's quite a wake of destruction.
Good thing he’s getting paid the big bucks to produce like a super star

How does it compare with notorious locker room menaces, Colton "coach killer" Parayko and Robert "Wreck and ruin" Thomas.

-Ken Hitchcock. fired from Blues in 2017
- Mike Yeo, fired from Blues in 2018
- Craig Berube, fired from Blues in 2023

To be fair, Paul Maurice quit rather than being fired. Although that might reflect even worse on PLD.

Must have been amazing watching a multi millionaire win another million dollars. I mean, it was probably fun for the 7 teams that were allowed to participate.

It is a bit ridiculous to limit the number of competitors in an unknown fashion while placing a financial prize on it. Not that it even motivated all of the participants to take it completely serious.

The league would look far better if that money was a donation to the charity of the winner’s choice.

I think that the switch from Liut to Theofanous was an unambiguous disaster for him. He clearly did it to try and force his way out of St. Louis and the agent's decision to make it public backfired spectacularly. And then he didn't get the contract/offers he wanted/expected in the summer of 2023 and had to scramble for new representation.

His decision to fire Theofanous and move on to CAA was a good one. He got $5M and a full NTC from a team where he wasn't expected to do everything offensively. I don't think there were better options on the table for a 1 year prove it deal unless he was willing to take a steep pay cut. This current contract was a good mix of security and opportunity to get one more good contract. It hasn't worked out perfectly, but it was a good outcome for a guy who found himself without a chair when the music stopped after the first few days of UFA.

I'm curious how this one will work out. His new agent has deep ties to the Sens. He represents Brady Tkachuk, Norris, and Brannstrom as well as former Sens Stone and Karlsson. He also represents Roberth Thomas and Joel Edmundsson. Who knows how much they keep in touch with Tarasenko, but I wouldn't be surprised if they offered some input. Is this another situation where he hires a guy who reps a friend like Theofanous and Panarin or is this a strategic move to go with the guy best suited to deal with his current team?

Tarasenko has made plenty, but I think his representatives have caused him to have significantly less career earnings than he might have had.
I don't think Liut screwed him by getting him $7.5M x 8 in 2015. That made him the 13th highest paid forward in the league in year 1 and he was still 4 years away from UFA. If he doesn't go long term there, Army for sure would have squeezed him to a cheap bridge deal. He didn't have arbitration rights, so he would have 'missed out' on $7-$10M of earnings on a bridge deal vs his long term deal. I'm not sure that he would have made up those losses in 2017. If he did, I don't think it would have been by a huge amount. Signing a 5 or 6 year deal would have been disastrous financially as he would have hit UFA in the midst of his injury issues.

All in all, I think Liut got him a fantastic deal in 2015.

So far, he's made $5M in 1 year since that deal. We'll see what he gets in the next couple years, but I don't think there was a market for him to have gotten $25M+ last summer no matter who his agent was or how a different agent could have changed perception of his character.

His estimated career earnings will be sitting a bit north of $67M at the end of this season and he should be able to get that around $75M+ by the time he retires even if he is forced to do it without getting term security. Considering he didn't exit his ELC until after his age 23 season and the injuries he sustained, I don't think he had a much higher earning potential than that.

His agents have gotten him damn near the most money he was going to get given the way his career went. And $70M+ is a massive amount of money that the large majority of really good players in the 2010s never saw.

His recently fired agent failed to get him a long term contract this past offseason, even after he’d put the surgery rehab concerns to bed. He was UFA and could see open bidding coming.

The single season term this year is fine, but compared to more guaranteed money in a longer contract, it’s not great. Why didn’t he get a 5 year deal somewhere? There were rumors that they’d turned down longer offers. He ended up scrambling for a 1y deal at a non contender. I don’t view that as a win. And the risk is that he may not get a longer deal if he has a poor season. Not a trivial risk.

I also think the rupture with St Louis and the awkward public negotiations for the trade poisoned his value for a long term deal. I am not faulting Liut.

His chance of getting a long term deal vanished on July 2nd. Not a single UFA got a multi-year deal with an AAV of $2M+ following July 2nd. His recently fired agent didn't get hired until July 5th when that chance was gone. The failure to get any combination of term/money is 100% on Theofanous.

Getting $5M on a 1 year deal in a flat cap was pretty good work at that stage of the game. I don't think his AAV was every going to be north of $5M on a multi-year deal, so not 'losing' significant money in 2023/24 was pretty good. Especially since there weren't too many rosters that could fit him at that price while still having enough offensive talent to set him up for some individual success.

Talking about the deal he could have gotten on 7/1, I don't think there was any chance of him getting a 5 year deal at $5M+ last summer. He put the shoulder issues to bed, but he wasn't nearly as good in 2022/23 as he was in 2021/22. He went from a 35+ goal pace to a 21 goal pace and an 89 point pace to a 59 point pace. He didn't improve once he got shipped to the Rangers (the way ROR did in Toronto and Barby did in Vegas) and his addition to the Rangers roster didn't help them in the playoffs.

I think he would have been in the $12M-$20M range on a 3-5 year deal (depending on how much he wanted to go to a contender. That would put his career earnings in the $74M-$82M range by the end. He still has a pretty good shot to get right into that range, even if it means less stability.

Thefanous did a horrible job for him, but I think his other agents have done very well for him so far.
