Around The NHL #13

Hanifin is a top pairing D, I don't know how you can that without a first or similar asset, meaning solid NHL player. I don't think our minor league players, outside of Guenther, would move the needle along with second round picks.
But he’s a rental. No sane GM will pay a 1st for a rental. It almost never works out in your favor when you do that…

I agree, but I think the price is a first still, GMs have historically paid that for top pairing D at the TDL.

I'm all for staying the course...we're not quite cup ready, the team looks to be a viable candidate to compete for a playoff spot, but obviously we're missing a couple pieces to be considered a top team in the league.
But, Simachev, Guenther, Lameroureux, Geekie, Doan, Hrabal, and the '24 1st. I feel sorry for our opponents in 3-4 seasons from now. Bring band-aids and tissues when you face the Yotes.

Would not move a first for Hanifin, even if extended.
I wouldn't either.

That said, I would move other assets for Hanifin, just not the first.
If you could get an extension negotiated with him, maybe you could do something like

Hanifin for Soderstrom + Jenik + 2026 1st and 2024 2nd? Would CGY do that, I dunno? Maybe swap out Jenik for a 2025 3rd if they’re not interested in him.

Hanifin for Soderstrom + 2024 2nd, 2025 3rd, 2026 1st?

So am I the only one ok with trading a 1st for an extended Hanifin? I would want it done before the end of the year.
But in all seriousness, doubt Calgary would entertain the idea of trading him to a team just above them in the standings.
I don't see any other top pairing D available right now, but I also don't think we need one to get over the bubble. I'm on board with trying to get Ferraro.

Problem w/Hanifin is that he's 26 and will be 27 in January, so according to averages, he will be at his peak next season, every season after that will be a declining player. (speaking according to averages).

If he were 1yr younger, I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's really close.

Think Hanifin could fit into the core alright with an extension in place. It really depends on what his cost is. It's a bit early to be tossing out high picks and prospects because so many still have to develop. So if it's second tier prospects or a package of later picks, then sure. Otherwise, just wait for free agency. This year doesn't really matter except for development purposes, and potential playoffs could be argued are in that vein.

I kind of doubt Hanifin's cost is going to fit in that profile and not sure how far beyond the line Armstrong is willing to extend. It's not like he really has pressure on him to come out empty handed and just say that the cost was too high and we are really focused on building up our prospects and team development.

If we're in a playoff battle around the deadline then I hope we treat Zucker, Stecher and Dumba as our "acquisitions".
Keep the gang together. Let kids fill in for injuries.
I think Tourigny can lead them to the promised land.

I think it will cost a first+ for sure. I doubt it happens because why would Hanifin extend now anyway with anyone? He is close and can test the market as a UFA this summer. That leaves all of his options open to determine the team and market value. BA isn't going to pay UFA prices for a top pairing D, we have no money and at UFA time you pay the max and get the least usually for your dollars. I would love to get a Hannifin type of player, i think he would be a huge help, I just don't see us paying his salary price.

They say he agreed to something like 7.5m/yr. but decided to wait to see the direction Calgary is taking. I think he might hit UFA, but it will come down to money and team, as usual. Calgary for sure will want a first, but they are in a pickle and everyone knows it, so the 1st. might not be there.

A team that thinks Hanifin might help them win the cup at the TDL might give up a 25th or later first for him. If they talk to his agent ahead of the trade, they can find out what money he is looking for and if he might sign with that team. They would then know if he is a pure rental or something more.

Bottom line, if he is the piece that puts a top 5-10 team over the top, they might do it.
