While those deals might be fine in a vacuum, I don't see how they can all be on the same team.

No way the Marner, Nylander and JT contracts can fit on the same team and still have success IMO. From a team-building perspective I don't like giving your second-tier talent that much of your cap.

You can't really build teams like that in the NHL - it'd be like giving a max contract to your backup point guard in the NBA (if the nba had a hard cap)

They need to move Marner imo - because no ones taking Tavares, and I think Nylander is the better player.

I'm fine with the Matthew's contract - because he's actually your best player.

There really isn't any reason those guys couldn't get 1 to 2 million less and leave them some cap to get more depth to actually try and win a cup
Exactly, apparently Matthews, Marner , Tavares , and now Nylander don't know that there is no I in team.

It's all ego after Tavares signed an inflated free agent contract.

I don't really blame the players - I'd probably do the exact same thing.

"I'm better than him - you have to pay me more."

Toronto didn't have the foresight to move the player(s) before it became a problem.

Totally agree.

It's crazy that he got a full no move clause given that the contract is already hard enough to move. Some teams seem to tack them on as if they have zero monetary value.

And those signing bonuses on top of all of that, bigger signing bonus value than Aho, Dubois, Gaudreau, Pastrnak. Like why give all these extra perks if you are already paying the guy top dollar and term? Those perks are there to get a concession from a the player to get a more favorable AAV (like Florida with Tkachuk). Leafs just throwing that at Nylander makes them look so... pathetic and desperate?

It's interesting that Ottawa is much less desirable market than Toronto and that org has been a gong show for years yet they've had no trouble signing their stars to reasonable deals unlike the Leafs.

Dailyfaceoff has decided the Jets deserve to be *drumroll*....NUMBER 4!!! Still haven't quite convinced their basement bloggers, I guess.

It's laughable how little respect the team can get. They have beaten every team ahead of them in that ranking, and in convincing fashion.

I get that the hockey ops leadership in charge is probably thinking that if their strategy doesn't work then these contracts will be someone else's problem but at some point you'd think someone above the hockey ops would ask "why are other teams able to do more with less resources?"

Shanahan in particular probably doesn't get another coach or GM if it blows up on him. I don't know why anyone would hire him if it does, if he can't build a winner with all of Toronto's resources how could he build one anywhere else?

Only thing i can think of is they have to throw all the perks in along with all the money because these guys know that they can't win shit for the time of the contract. :naughty:

Agreed. Matthews I would pay for sure. Nylander, this may be his peak season that he doesn't replicate and this contract looks much worse if that happens.

Leafs should have traded Nylander to LA this summer for Vilardi, Roy and a 1st and they'd be a better team.

Or traded for Vilardi, Iafallo , Kupari and a 2nd and they would have been the best team in the NHL.:naughty:

The reason that GMs in these highest pressure markets like Toronto do crazy things is because they all know they won't be around to clean it up after it blows up in their face.

Because Chevy is a lifer in Winnipeg, he has to live with his moves for the long term. Totally different way to do business.

I don’t care how good Nylander is … I would never want him on my team.
I guess people forgot about his last contract … sat out the start of the season crying like a baby until he got his soother.
Player like that never win … unless you are talking about bank accounts.

Its almost like the Leafs just tell the agents to write up the contract that suits their player and drop it off at team offices for the GM to sign and date

No way could the Leafs let Nylander walk to free agency, Nylander's camp knew this and bent the Leafs over like the other core members hade done to Dubas in years past. Just exactly what has this core done in Toronto or are all the SC's invisible. Marner is the odd man out, there D sucks and they have no long term plan for a goalie. Over 50m for 5 players is insane
