Agreed. Matthews I would pay for sure. Nylander, this may be his peak season that he doesn't replicate and this contract looks much worse if that happens.

Leafs should have traded Nylander to LA this summer for Vilardi, Roy and a 1st and they'd be a better team.
his stats in recent years are pretty darn close to pasrnak, and panarin. he's on a 120 pt pace this year, i think he gets close to this in UFA. now from the Leafs POV not sure if it's wise.

No way could the Leafs let Nylander walk to free agency, Nylander's camp knew this and bent the Leafs over like the other core members hade done to Dubas in years past. Just exactly what has this core done in Toronto or are all the SC's invisible. Marner is the odd man out, there D sucks and they have no long term plan for a goalie. Over 50m for 5 players is insane
Apparently Marner has a full NMC as well?

I don't get why they didn't give themselves a little flexibility here. It's not like Nylander, Marner or Matthews gave you discounts on the AAV - Why give them even more value with NMCs?

there's like what 4-5 goalies that you can really chalk-up to providing long-term stability, & i bet those teams who have them don't want to give them up (ie: the Jets)

This isn't a problem that has just recently snuck up on the Leafs, they have had years and years to fix the problem and they always make the wrong choice and pick up some other teams trash

Dailyfaceoff has decided the Jets deserve to be *drumroll*....NUMBER 4!!! Still haven't quite convinced their basement bloggers, I guess.

It's a bit of a grudging admission that the Jets are pretty good. One of them (Scott) still has them at 7.

Scott's rankings:
1. Florida
2. Rangers
3. Boston
4. Vancouver
5. Vegas
6. Colorado
7. Winnipeg

Mike's rankings:
1. Florida
2. Rangers
3. Winnipeg
4. Colorado
5. Boston
6. Vancouver
7. Vegas

I don't disagree, but trading (or moving on) nylander for which goalie? Or signing which upcoming UFA goalie guarantees long term stability?

I think ppl overestimate how many goalies provide great stats on a yearly basis over a long period of time. And the teams that have those goalies (ie: WPG, NYR, NYI or TBL in recent years) probably don't want to trade their guys bc then they're in basically the same position as the Leafs.

Last year samsonov was pretty good, and their team sv% was equivalent to us. Luckily they didn't sign him long term. Similarly, Campbell had a couple good years there and they were smart not to sign him long term. They obviously need a good goalie, but to get one of them long term stability / great guys may be difficult. Like most teams they're going to have to take chances on guys and hope one pans out.

While those deals might be fine in a vacuum, I don't see how they can all be on the same team.

No way the Marner, Nylander and JT contracts can fit on the same team and still have success IMO. From a team-building perspective I don't like giving your second-tier talent that much of your cap.

You can't really build teams like that in the NHL - it'd be like giving a max contract to your backup point guard in the NBA (if the nba had a hard cap)

They need to move Marner imo - because no ones taking Tavares, and I think Nylander is the better player.

I'm fine with the Matthew's contract - because he's actually your best player.
I don't know if no one could take on Tavares' contract. He's basically a point-per-game center with one year left - and after the Leafs pay his bonus on July 1, his 2024-25 salary is just $940k. I'm sure a few teams are sharpening their pencils...but he'd have to waive his NMC.

The reason that GMs in these highest pressure markets like Toronto do crazy things is because they all know they won't be around to clean it up after it blows up in their face.

Because Chevy is a lifer in Winnipeg, he has to live with his moves for the long term. Totally different way to do business.
Toronto will and has for DECADES supported terrible teams.
Marquee players with piss poor results don’t matter there.

Essentially they had no choice but to sign Willy.

All Toronto can brag about is Matthews personal stats, the team has done nothing with him.
Edmonton has accomplished nothing with McDavid and Drai either.
I’d rather have a team like ours is this year.
I couldn’t care less about having a star vs having a team where the majority of the lineup contributes.
Expect more of the same from Toronto

This isn't basketball, where the only option to win a championship is to either have one of the 25 best players of all time, or be the 2004 Pistons.

Hockey teams like the 2004 Pistons win cups all the time.

(The only other championship in the last while that didn't fit either category was Toronto's - and I'd have considered KL on track for top-25 status at the time)

The band aid approach hasn't worked for them, pretty sure they won't be trading Nylander so there only option is drafting the best available in the upcoming draft which may take a while to produce if ever or hoping the guy currently backing up Jones, Hildeby pans out. They just seem to have a hard time finding one that works year in year out.
