I don't. Maybe it makes sense to go for it like that if you are the Rangers where you can easily replenish value even if you do end up losing the player. But for a small market GM to acquire essentially a pending UFA at that price, and not even at the trade deadline where you have some sort of certaintly about making the playoffs is just awful. Making things even worse Chicago drafted Korchiski with that pick who is one the best d-man in the WHL.

I don't think that teams like Ottawa or Winnipeg or other small market teams can just draft and develop their way to the next level. They'd been drafting and developing for awhile, take a swing and take the next step. Some posters on here are afraid of being a mid level team but would also not take the chances you need to take to get out of that tier.

The choice for these teams isn't limited to "sit back draft and develop each year" vs "give up a 7th overall and 39th overall pick for a guy almost no team control left and not even make the playoffs that one year". There is a vast spectrum if choices available in the middle.

This was not it. It was a poorly thought out trade for a guy they had almost no team control left and whose qualifying offer would have made him difficult to trade. They could have used those same assets to trade for a guy to help the team for multiple seasons.

I still think it was worth the swing. It's also an entertainment business, if it pays off, it's worthwhile.

I think they could've got more for him in a trade if he didn't limit himself to one team only. Even Dubois gave the Jets 2 options.

I’m not sure it was worth the swing — does a scoring winger like DeBrincat really put them over-the-top for one year? Evidently not, and the price they paid was hefty.

Although it’s easy for me to say this in hindsight. Maybe they had reason to believe he would re-sign when they acquired him.

Dorion probably thought that being that close to the guy's hometown would be an asset - not that he only wanted to play in Detroit...

That being said, let's trade Helle to Ottawa!!!!

I wonder why? Is it cost cutting measures? I don’t really trust Rogers to improve anything let alone hockey coverage.
This is all I can find.

Maybe they want to appeal to a new demographic, like when they brought in Strombo. But there is the cost element. Newbs work cheaper than vets.

Yeah, I really miss Snuffleupagus on the broadcasts...

Making room for even more gambling segments.
Giant blackjack wheel that determines what they will 'analyze'?

Canada's Top Drag Queen gives the evolving odds during the game?

Or just a pair of fuzzy dice hanging over Ron MacLean's desk

Galchenyuk is probably the main reason we got Perfetti, so I appreciate him for that, but other than that, man, that’s not a good look

I'm so happy I got out of broadcast media - just a brutal business

Traditional media has been under siege for a while and that is not ending. What did you notice changed the most during your time in broadcast media?
