Yeah this is why I really think the Jets need to go with a Vegas ('17/'18) and Seattle model, with a full lineup of 2nd/3rd liners, no big stars. Guys who just want to play and prove themselves, no primadonnas. We know this recipe works, I think Seattle proved VGK wasn't just a fluke.

There are plenty stars who are not primadonnas- Buff, Helle, Wheeler, Morrissey, Ehlers, Connor all commited long term with the Jets and are/were bona-fide stars in the league when those contracts were signed.

Either you all are some single men or you are with someone who is from Winnipeg

I know 3 guys personally that played minor pro in the states. Met their wives from Indiana, Michigan and South Carolina. Went on to marry them and have children. There wives went to live close to family in Indiana, Michigan and South Carolina while there husbands chased their dreams and when it was over they didn't move back to Friendly Manitoba they all moved to Indiana, Michigan and South Carolina to live with their families who built a life there
100% this. I met my wife in Winnipeg, but she grew up in BC. Once she finished College she wanted to move back to the coast. Can't argue with that if you want to stay married.

Hard to argue with this.

I'm from Winnipeg, but my wife is from Poland. We don't live in either Winnipeg or Poland, but I don't see us ever going back to Winnipeg -- she never could get used to the winter/weather. I still prefer Manitoba to Southern Ontario, but we're established here now so ...

Scheifele and Lowry too - and from the early days: Ladd (he left for money), Little, Pavelec, Bogo, Myers, Stafford, Perreault...

I think the bigger problem is the Jets pro scouts and/or Chevy's spotty record identifying decent mid-lineup talent, and that's where they really need to be making their hay.

My friend’s wife is from Larry Birds’ hometown of French Lick, Indiana.
They have been married for 30 years and she’s loves it here.
My wife and I moved to Kelowna in the 90’s , she didn’t want to live there so we moved back here , even though she isn’t from here she likes it here.
My neighbours are retired military from Quebec and Ontario they like it here.
Point is some people actually like living here, probably not many young athletes but it is possible as we have seen with many retired players from the Jets and Bombers who stayed.
It’s on the organization to sell itself and the community.
Ultimately if someone doesn’t want to be here like PLD what is the benefit to employ them here if you know they don’t want to be here.
Cheveldayoff gets no passes on this excuse, it’s part of the job.

I'd love to hear that silver-tongued devil Cheveldayoff's pitch about living in Winnipeg... :sarcasm:

Jets co-owner David Thomson has been listed as the fourth richest sports team owner in the world by Online Betting Guide.

Thomson, who is a partner with True North Sports and Entertainment’s Mark Chipman is listed as having a wealth of $52 billion.

He is the only NHL owner in the top-10 list.

My wife is American. We met in the states and lived there until we had a young family. We wanted to raise our kids around grandparents so the choice was winnipeg or Jacksonville, Florida. We picked Winnipeg as we both saw it as a better place to raise kids.

Neither of us regret the choice we made BUT we also can't see ourselves here for 50 more winters once the kids are older and spread out

I just don't think people give enough appreciation to a guy like Kelly McCrimmon who in my mind has one of the best eyes for talent around. The guy ran Brandon for years and they were powerhouses despite being a team that has to travel the most and is generally avoided by top prospects. He knows how to exploit the rules to his benefit and he is doing the exact same thing here he did in Brandon
Chandler Stephenson, Reilly Smith, William Karlsson, Marchessault... great acquisitions.

That’s Cheveldayoff’s knapsack to carry, not mine

If you choose to make up your mind in advance about a situation that you have not yet seen or experienced, you can miss out on many opportunities and experiences.
Winnipeg’s winters are harsh and it’s a very small city, that’s the bad.
The other downsides are common to other cities.
For many “star” players , Winnipeg is not on their lists and that is their right, they have that in their CBA.
However those with open minds often find themselves going against the grain once they actually live here.
I get annoyed when people on the main boards bash my city incessantly when ;
A) they have never been here.
B) they can’t even spell it.
Truthfully I wouldn’t want to play here as a native of this city because you could never win with some people.
If you are fortunate enough to play professionally why look down your nose at where you might have to spend whatever the career average is playing hockey 7-8 months of the year.
A lot of these players grew up in far less exciting places than here.
As others have pointed out 70% of players don’t have those exclusionary lists.

I have lived many places in Canada, including 4 provinces and 1 Territory, and Winnipeg is my absolute favourite. It definitely gets a bad wrap but the people in that city are far and away among the most down to Earth and easy to get to know folks around. Thing is you dont really see that until you move away and when i live in places at or near Edmonton and/or Toronto, it became really obvious. Not that folks there are bad, it is just Winnipegers and Manitobans stick out as more authentic and genuine. Just my personal opinion.

So the city has appeal, it may not be just immediately obvious. And especially to those who have a preexisting bias.

Dumb Question:
How does the NHL diagnose Concussions during protocol?

I read that:
Concussions can be tricky to diagnose. Though you may have a visible cut or bruise on your head, you can't see a concussion. Signs may not appear for days or weeks after the injury. Some symptoms last for just seconds; others may linger

I also read:
The NHL concussion protocol rests in part on a standardized test that involves answering a long series of questions that aim to discern cognitive impairment; it can take up to 15 or 20 minutes to complete. It's a system that can be gamed, and so some hockey players game it.

Not saying Tkachuk is coming back, but if a player was stubborn enough, could they circumvent protocol (in general)?

There's no on site CT Scanner for this kind of thing?

And would a CT Scan even be conclusive within 30 mins of sustaining a concussion?

Dave Poulin was on WST last week and said "The teams that are successful are the ones willing to take risks and make big moves for superstars, look at Vegas and Florida", and Hustler pointed out to him that all those guys those teams "took a risk on" wanted to go there specifically.

yeah Poulin wasn't quite with it there. Hustler correctly pointed that out
To Poulins credit though, either this time or in the past, he has mentioned repeatedly that there are some players who are happy to play and sign long term in Winnipeg without being Primadonas ala PLD. I hope he would know being a former player and that it wasnt a thing of his era and that he has his ear open about current players

I feel some players like McGroarty in the future are going to be the next Wheeler/Ladd types (appreciate and rep the city, and give back)

Wtf
I haven't watched a lick of this guy. How good is he?

Dillon retained for 1 year should have real good value if they view samberg as a top4d this year
hes great. I enjoyed watching him against the oilers. good news for Kings although I bet they are hoping they can extend him long term

Idk you look at some of the players who were rumored to be on the block or legit moved or selected in expansion over the years sans NTC /NMC and it seems like there's deals to be had.
I think they need to find their versions of McCann, Dunn, Sprong, Marino, Montour, Verhaeghae, Hagel, Forsling, Toews, Nichushkin, Lehkonen, Bunting, Stephenson etc.

Unheralded, lower-market value names but can produce strongly especially given their cost.

This is the player market where imo I think the Jets need to be one of the most active teams in the nhl. Demelo was a good one that would fit the bill. Of course they need to draft/develop better along with this too.
Agreed, Jets need to be scouring that market with more purpose. I’d say Namestnikov and Niederreiter both fit that category. Colton could be a good target as well.

I work with a former Bomber from Mississippi whose playing career ended while playing in a different city in 2011. He still adopted Winnipeg as his home and has chosen to raise a family here. He’s very community driven and caring. Those are the types you want to stick around. Let the Dubois’, Kane’s and Trouba’s of this world leave if they want.
