They can still try to compete and if it fails, sell both plus others at the deadline and truly kick off the rebuild leading up to what looks like a great draft. Great trade for Calgary.
Only problem for Calgary is the brutal PR hit they've taken with their two biggest stars wanting to jump ship.

They need to lock up Huberdeau for sure to kill that story line.

They should go scortched earth right now and draft an entire team next year, but they won’t.

Huberdeau is going to be 30 years old! Wtf, where has time gone? Right.... I'm almost 40. FML.

Suddenly signing him to a long term deal doesn't sound so hot.

Gaudreau's wife wanted him to play on the east coast, that was fairly obvious. She's a nurse and now goes to a city with a great children's hospital where she can also advance her career. Johnny plays closer to home and signs a big deal but he was very open to staying in Calgary. Reminds me of Pronger wanting out of EDM for family reasons.

M. Tkachuk is a different situation. Everyone knew he wanted to get paid and likely wanted go to play in a US market but Gaudreau leaving just made that decision set in stone.

Calgary can't be blamed for either leaving, even though they have a brutal history over the last 30 years of having stars leave and getting nothing/not much in return.

Calgary is still in an intersting situation.

Losing Gaudreau and Tkachuk is what, 215 points gone from the offense? Huberdeau is an outstanding player, but the team is still worse offensively than they were last year. Weegar adds to the offense from the back end, but that's now an extremely crowded blueline.

I think Treliving still has a lot of work to do to keep this window of contention open, but at least he's plugged the flood gates.

I just don't understand any of this. I seem to distinctly recall being told by Blues fans that both Brady and Matt wanted to play in St. Louis, and would inevitably force their way there to sign long term deals. Instead they've both signed for long term elsewhere.

It's almost as if the Tkachuk brothers are motivated by something other than 'me play where Dad play'. :sarcasm:

Shocked Matthew took Sun, the beach, and no taxes over playing out his career in Calgary… I guess they won’t be retiring his jersey.

1. Yes cap space accrues during the season if teams have cap. Most contenders will have virtually no cap space by the start of the season so they won’t be accruing much if any. Look at last years deadline, almost every trade required retention.

2. Eugene is dead. Our budget this year has been reported at either 74M or as high as 76M. Most say 74M

Are you shocked Giroux chose Ottberia over Florida though?
Comparing a guy near the end of his career with a guy just getting his first taste of UFA money is no bueno. Giroux's estimated career earnings to date are close to $80M and M. Tkachuk's are around $23M. So while Giroux is still getting paid pretty handsomely, money is not exactly at the top of the priority list. He gets to have the financial flexibility to say he wants to play close to home or to be near family or whatever secondary (read: more emotional) reasons he has.

No… the odd player past his prime chooses a destination when he values playing close to his families home. We got Giroux, Hasek for a year 15 years ago etc.

We will always get one of these former superstars every 7-10 years and there will always be a “redicilous to argue” net drain of UFA / trade demand/ NTC blocked talent away from Ottberia.

Huberdeau didn’t have Calgary on his 8 team NTC. He must like higher taxes, cold weather and a smaller quiet place.

I’m confused … are you arguing there is an equal distribution of UFA/trade talent amongst all teams ? His NTC list is probably focused on teams that he wouldn’t be able to put up decent points ahead of a UFA contract year.

I’m sure Huberdeau can survive for one year in Calgary before he goes where ever he wants.
