I would have kept Amonte, Weight, Kovalev, Zubov.

Zubov is in HOF.

Kovalev and Amonte were among the best wingers in the league in their prime.

Weight was a great middle six guy.

I still think the Rangers win the Cup with them. It always bothered me how little the Rangers valued building a team.

This trade ultimately cost the Flyers a Cup. It would have costed the Rangers 94 in my opinion. No guarantee the mutiny of Neilson still doesn't happen led by Messier. No guarantee Lindros stays healthy even into the late 90s.

For those young posters, the offer was too much, but Lindros was called The Next One. He was supposed to essentially be a larger version of Messier and a top five player in the league.

That's the extra context as to why so much was offered.

Also remember that Smith was almost replaced by Cliff Fletcher during this time. Not because of performance, but ownership change. Gutkowski and Jaffe kept BAU in the front office.

We talk about it all the time, Rangers probably win another Cup if Smith just stops doing anything post-94 and incorporates young players into the lineup. They had enough youth to contend for the next decade.

Eric Lindros scored 97 points in 65 games in 93-94. Adding him to that Rangers team at the expense of Kovalev (my favorite player ever and the reason for the #27 in my handle), who was the only playoff contributor on that Cup team, is a net positive for sure. Having Messier-Lindros down the middle with Leetch and Zubov on the blueline means multiple Cups for sure in my opinion.

Lindros was more than just hype. He was an absolutely dominant player and could have reached even higher levels playing on a team with #11.

how does Paul Maurice have this unshakeable reputation as a good coach

dude got swept by the f***ing Habs last year lol. he had a blueline of Trouba-Prime Byfuglien-Prime Myers with very underrated Morrissey and Enstrom thrown in for shits and giggles and an incredible and diverse forward group that got stomped by the first year Knights. what does this dork have to do to stop getting jobs?

Since 04 Tampa has won 3 Cups, been to 5 Cup Finals, 7 Conference Finals.

Jury is still out for this Finals, it could be 4 Cups soon.

By far the most dominant team of the last 18 years.

Ridiculous.

I hope we can have that kind of run. We have made it to 4 Conference Finals and 1 Cup Final since the lockout, but 0 Cups to show for it. If we could've just got the job done things would look a lot different for the Rangers. Hopefully this playoff run was the start of something special for the Rangers.

Yes, management of the lightning has done an excellent job with their hockey team. Many factors why they have been so dominant tho:

- Excellent drafting (especially drafting talent after first round)
-Excellent player development
-Excellent trades. Just look at us. We gave them McD and Miller for basically nothing
-Low taxes and lower cost of living than many other franchises (players signed to team Friendly deals). Just compare a player wants to buy a house downtown Tampa vs. Downtown Manhattan....yeah.

Parity could be a thing. But many teams are run poorly. Just look at Edmonton, you can luckk out on couple of fantastic players, but if your franchise is run bad it's still hard to win a cup.

They've also missed the playoffs 6 times in that 18 season span which is kind of weird when you compare it to the other really dominate team in the Pens who only missed twice (either side of the 04 lockout).
Possibly shows that TBL is more aggressive in making roster changes to refresh their chances, while a team like the Pens really held on to their core and made changes around that?

Business As Usual.
Or, Beer And Underwear; as in "when I get home it's just BAU on the couch*

*I may have just made that up, but now I kind of like it!

Bergeron is coming back

was hoping we could get him on a cheapish 1 year deal. Oh well, it was unlikely. I guess he's just comfortable. Boston's roster is totally beat up at the beginning of the season. I feel like they will be bottom 10 at the Xmas break. When they've got their main roster back, they'll have a steep hill to climb their way back into the playoffs.

Next up, hoping for Malkin on a cheapish 1 year deal.

As a hockey fan I enjoy watching him. Smart player. Bruins scouts. 2ed round pick in 03. Talent can be found if you have the right scouts and find the right talent.
For reasons I don't quite understand this post piqued my interest. Mainly I think because despite me not being a huge fan of NYR drafting, I actually think we've done ok with non-1st round picks (guys like Stepan, Dubi, Cally, Fast etc).
So I took a look and the Bruins 2nd+ rnd drafting from 02-06 is exceptional. Bergeron, Thompson, Krejci, Versettg, Lucic and Marchand, plus a few more. In that time ignoring goalies and only using players with 100+ games, the Bruins drafting of 2nd round plus talent =
6718 games 1484 goals 2400 assists 3884 points

Then it just sort of falls of a cliff. Did they change out staff? From the pick after Marchand until today, still ignoring goalies and having a minimum of 100gp it =
2550 games 252 goals 537 assists 789 points

As a point of reference, post 2nd round of 06 (the Marchand pick) the Rangers have drafted the following stat-line using the same criteria:
3661 games 666 goals 1056 assist 1722 points

Probably tell us nothing really, but it wasted some time at work and seems to agree with my hypothesis that we've drafted ok outside of the first round

Neither Berg or Malkin are signing a cheapish deal (well maybe Berg takes a slight hometown deal, but not to play for another franchise)

Malkin is going to find a 2-3 year deal somewhere for around 6-7M per probably, and it better not be with us.

Future TDL acquisition for us?
Whoever does is going to have to trade half the farm. He would be the prize of the deadline and wouldn't be cheap at all.

Well maybe not half the farm but close enough to be true. If he’s still the same player he would be worth it, and this is coming from a poster who still wants to keep building around the core from within.
Adding a unique, dynamic human being to a roster that is made up of teammates that care for and pull for each other are how dynasties are formed.
Lafrenier, Bergeron and Blais on a line. In the words of Larry David… Pretty good, pretty good!
