So will Nolan Patrick retiring due to concussions have more of an impact that apparent Larkin headhunting? NHL needs to step up. This has ruined a young persons career. Stop with the headshots and use lifetime bans for repeat offenders. This should be strict.

No it won't have an effect. Policing hits to the head to your extent will be very difficult.

I don't know much about Patrick but in one of the stories they mentioned it was a migraine issue that the doctor thought was genetic and not related to a hockey injury. Had he suffered major known concussions? They're saying migraines but weirdly not calling them concussion related.

To be clear I think the NHL could do a better job of protecting players' brains.

EDIT: I just saw a highlight of the Mackinnon shoulder. Weird the articles didn't mention that.

The league has steadfastly refused to do anything about this problem. They haven't budged. They've managed to remove fighters, and they've chosen to come down harder and harder on retaliation, both of which have, at best, not helped and, at worst, exacerbated the issue. It's going in a pretty scary direction. Meanwhile, efforts to expand the league and add even more low-skill players who are trying to carve out a career for themselves are not helping.

I've been saying for a long while, something real bad is going to happen in this league before they are forced to course correct.

Reactive league is going to react.

Figured with Kings strong season so far that Dubois was doing well for them, and yikes lol. Always felt like a guy you might regret giving 8 years to.

It's sad to see the cliff that OV has fallen off of so quickly :/

I mean, I did wonder how long he could basically play top line hockey as a stationary turret. Like in the offensive zone he's just standing in soft spots, gets the puck, shoots, goes back to standing...

When you have the best shot in the world that's a decent trick but it's always been wild to see how little he skates now.

Patrick's issues have nothing to do with concussions. He has had massive migraines issue (non concussion related) since before he ever hit the NHL and that is the reason he missed so much time. Concussions may not have helped, but they weren't the cause of his issues from what others more informed than I have told me.

OV is weird case as he could always still get on a heater, as he has always been streaky, but lots of times players this age eventually hit a major wall and they are just done. He doesn't look fast, but he also doesn't look way behind the pace to me either.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought some of his early injuries were to blame, but from what you said it sounds more so they exacerbated an issue.

How long ago did he start getting the headaches? He wasn’t diagnosed until he had been in the NHL a while.

I’m not convinced the concussions aren’t the cause. The guy has suffered both migraines and concussions, who are we to say which has affected him more?

I was in a Patrick thread on the mains 2-3 years ago, and more than one Flyer fan, they inferred Patrick had said this, that he had migraine issues long before he got to the NHL and they all said it wasn't related to concussions. Not sure the cause but they all said not related to concussions. My brother doesn't play hockey and he suffers from severe migraines that put him on his butt all day, where he needs a pitch black room and quiet, and even then is still vomiting throughout the day.

Ít is rather naive to say, it has nothing to do with concussions. Especially if he already migraine issues before, consussions were certainly not making things better.

He has migraine issues that are genetic because they affected his father's NHL career too (but not his 20 season plus uncle), but they weren't properly diagnosed until he was 19. So its likely he had an issue that was exacerbated by concussions. If it had been that bad pre concussions, its likely word would have got out ahead of the draft.

I remember back when he was in the WHL there was health concerns related to him and going 1st over all. Can't remember if it was his shoulder or if it was concussion related but he's always had an asterisk next to his name when it came to his career.

It isn't naive at all if the Patrick camp is the one that is saying it.
