Cold streak incoming!

But even if we could prove an absence of intent, taking that shot at that time in a 5-1 game is at best a VERY careless move, if not outright negligent.

People doing dumb things should be held accountable, even if he didn't mean to hurt anybody.
Shooting the puck down the ice happens all the time near the end of the game. Happens during the game as well.

Not like that it doesn't. Firing a bomb with 1 second on the clock while down 5-1 with a guy in your lin eof fire is stupid and careless at best. Watson was clearly frustrated. Guys do dumb things when they are frustrated, and Watson did a really dumb thing there. I don't think "throwing the book at him" is right, but he should be held accountable.

Players often don't how much time is left though. I rarely knew unless someone shouted, and they rarely did in blowouts

You make it sound like it just happened to clip him 100 feet down the ice, or he turned into it at the last second. Watch the clip again - Watson had his head up both before and after the pass, and Lauzon was directly in front of him the whole time. While I don't know if he meant to hit him, he absolutely meant to take a slapshot in the direct vicinity of an opposing player.

Baseball players often break their bats in frustration too. But if one of them swung it all the way around and KO'ed the catcher, he would deserve disciplinary action, even without intent to injure. It's just a stupid move.

1 second, 5 seconds, 10 seconds..... it was 5-1, why are you firing a bomb there? If you want to get it deep, you dump it along the boards anyway, not a clapper straight at a guy who is literally in between the line of fire that would hit the net and the line of fire that gets the puck in the corner.

I'd be going after Watson there too, for being a chucklehead.

I don't think he was trying to hit the guy

I think it was absolutely an "I'm gonna fire this slapshot on net in the dying seconds of the game and if it happens to hit the Preds player, oh darn."

It was the end of a 5-1 game. Even if he just wants to rip the shot on net out of frustration, when you pick your head up and see a guy in front of you, you let up.

Watson had his head up a split second before releasing that shot. He looked right at the Preds player. And then he shot the puck on a trajectory that would have sent it 8 feet wide of the net.

There's almost no way he was trying to get that puck on net.

I'm thinking they might because he's not a big name player and they want to make up for the weak punishments on other players. Would love to be somewhat wrong though.

You may be right. I've given up on trying to predict how DoPS is going to dole out punishment

He was looking up the whole time and would still have known it was close to the end of the game. You also don't need a final shot on net in a 5-1 game.

I agree that the need is not there. I am just saying it happens often, and that he didn"t aim for the player.

It is more he didn't aim away as Lauzon was clearly there 10 feet in front of him, and that doesn't happen ever let alone often at your own blueline. I also believe he did aim at him.
