So if there's no room for him, what's the issue with making him trade bait for someone that can slot in somewhere?

Coaches don't seem to think there's much room right now for Turcotte, Kupari, Fagemo, Anderson-Dolan, Grans, Spence, Thomas, Madden, or Parik either, should we trade all of them as well?

I'm not saying Vilardi is untouchable. At this point the only prospect I wouldn't trade is Byfield. But Gabe can't produce in the NHL if he's not in the NHL.

Not to mention we'd be selling low on most of those guys after burying them, self-inflicted player management wounds.

I believe Spence will up with the club by next season. He has risen to top pairing on every team he's been on, including the Reign. He may not reach that in the NHL, but he's going to be a very good NHL defenseman. I believe better than Mikey Anderson/Bjornfot/Roy ....maybe not Durzi though!

Impressed that Carter got a multi-year deal. Good for him. Not sure if he is going to last that, but he certainly has revitalized his career a little. Always will wish him nothing but the best, he will always be a King in my book. One of the few we have acquired over the years that I think will be best known as a King over anywhere else they've been in their career.

The only remaining thing he can do for us is at least play 14 games this year because that is all that is remaining to upgrade our 4th round pick to a 3rd round pick this year... :P
I’m really glad he’s doing well, happy for him! In a perfect world where the Kings aren’t such a hot mess, Carter would still be here for the Kings’ last dance for the cup and retire with 3 rings.

Jeff Carter, on Doughty's 1000th game:

“He leads the charge every night and he’s done that his whole career. There are probably two guys in that room that are the biggest competitors I’ve ever played with and he’s one of them."

“It doesn’t matter what he’s doing. He hates to lose, and that’s what you need in a leader.”

A breath of fresh air, a playoff run, moving closer to Philly where he undoubtedly has connections still, there's several reasons why a trade for Carter worked out. I'm who he's playing with helped too. Good for him, I hope it's a good ride into the sunset.

Definitely more talent on the Pens, but he put in some heavy lifting early this year while guys like Malkin, Guentzel and Crosby were out. Him and Rodriguez kept that team afloat while they waited for reinforcements to arrive.

With regards to Carter, sometimes a change of scenery is just reinvigorating. I'm sure he was consulted on whether he wanted to leave. Happy for him, Pens were a great fit.

Also, Darryl Sutter doing Darryl Sutter things up in Calgary. The Flames put up 62 shots on CBJ, most in a regular season game since the Bruins put up 73 on Quebec in 91.

Jeff Carter signs two year extension with the Penguins, $3.125 M AAV. Full no move clause in both years. Would have been UFA after the season. Been a good fit in Pittsburgh.

That's a good deal for them. His decision to sign with them was partially due to the fact he loved playing with Crosby (olympics, etc). It has put the wind back in his sails.

He held the fort down early in the year, when Crosby and Malkin were out, has had shuffling linemates and situations. He's great on faceoffs, esp in the defensive zone. Now that he'll settle into a 3rd line center role, that gives them great depth down the middle, critical for a deep run. Also can move up to wing on top 6 if needed. He is very good in the playoffs, brings experience in OT's, game 7's, elimination games, etc.

Penguins Agree to Terms with Jeff Carter on a Two-Year Contract Extension

In 50 regular-season games with Pittsburgh, Carter registered 21 goals, 16 assists and 37 points.

Since his NHL debut during the 2005-06 season, Carter's 85 game-winning goals and 411 total goals rank second and eighth, respectively, among all NHL players.

Can someone explain to me why someone didn't run the f*** out of Dell? Straight f***ing run him. No mercy, you take out our best scorer on a cheap shot I'm coming after you.

I don't remember the particular Red Wing tough guy McSorely was referring to, but I do remember McSorely telling people about a brief conversation with Yzerman that went something like this:

"Tell so-and-so that if he hits Gretzky one more time, I am going to break your arm."

Perhaps part of the deal was we retain 50% cap if they extend him? Which, if so, is just a dumb move on Blake's part.

That's an error, Carter's contract expires this year and so does the retention. If you look at the updated Penguins page Carter's entire new contract counts against their cap.

Their software is probably just confused and didn't take retention into account, just extending his current contract by two years instead of viewing it as a new, 35+ contract with different terms.

I assume you're correct. I wonder if you can retain cap on an extension as part of a trade.
