How do you improve the Wings?

He was NHL ready at the end of 22-23 and got held out most of 23-24 because they didn't expect him to be ready out of camp and oversigned D.

Kasper being sent back down kinda is the example I think it is. He should've made the team out of camp. Just because they quickly recognized their mistake doesn't mean it's not evidence of their mentality.

ASP I'd be surprised. Buch I wouldn't. If he doesn't come until 2026 he's obviously NHL ready. If he has his KHL contract terminated, it won't be to make AHL money.

I think Ed could have held down a role sooner but I also believe he benefited from the extra AHL time.

Kasper functionally made the team out of camp. They had to create some space to get him up. He's an example of this organization giving a kid an opportunity.

What space did they need to create? The 13th man was Watson and there is no logical argument that Motte or Fischer was a better player or more deserving of a roster spot at that point.

They could've easily healthy scratched one of those two and sent Watson down while playing Kasper from Day 1.

Watson started on the roster over Kasper as a healthy scratch when the team was completely healthy. He played 1 game bouncing back and forth. Once there was a need for a full time forward Kasper was called up.

Sometimes the dust needs to settle after training camp before you get the lineup you really wanted.

Honestly Buch is interesting because I'm not sure that he'll want to play in the AHL. So I think there's a really good chance that he starts next year with us.

ASP I would bet spends at least half a season in GR. We held Ed down last year when he was clearly, inarguably better than 2/3 of the guy's on the team. We're still an over-ripening team and I think ASP is a classic example of someone that can benefit from that.

60% chance Buch makes it.
20% chance ASP does.
We'll assume that they're independent (though I suspect one making it decreases the other's odds slightly) and so it's 12% of both.
I think you’re spot on. I think Buch starts with Det or is traded by next season. ASP I think gets used to smaller ice and comes up around Christmas.

Larkin, Raymond, Edvinsson and let's say goalie are the most important in this team. It's a core . Debrincat, Kasper, Kane, Chiarot, Berggren Soderblom and AJo are secondary more important players. It's 11 guys I don't want to see getting traded. Rest of the guys could be easily get replaced.
Yzerman needs to be very careful bring someone who could improve our team , same time, not ruining chemistry.
Just keep Kasper on the first line good for him and I believe Larkin and Raymond like him. We could get second line center: Cazin ?, Zegras? Pettersson?
Keep AJo with Edvinsson .

It was great development. Honestly right now it's hard to complain about how any of our key prospects have been handled.
That'll happen when you rush a defenseman (Especially a small one) into the NHL at 19.
Exactly why we shouldn't force ASP into the NHL next season. Unless he has a huge offseason to build strength/explosiveness I'm fairly confident he's going to need an adjustment period in the AHL. And that's okay.

Damns I just seen the cap rise like crazy the next 3 years ... should be amazing but some of these players are gonna think the nhl is like the nba and demand 20+ a year when we have a lot more players to sign and hockey is more real team sport

All this to say if I'm yzerman knowing the cap is going up 25 mill in 3 years I'm taking chances and offering edvinsson 7 mill x 8 and if Johansson plays well the rest of the year like he is now 2.5 x 4... unfortunately kasper has 2 more years so we cant

I'd be trying to get some of these important pieces signed longterm asap

"Buch" is under KHL contract next yr.

And when he comes over the next yr, he will not be signing a two-way contract.

"Contracts" in KHL can be dealt with, see Michkov. It might be more difficult sometimes to sign player without contract. See Fedotov. Entry level contracts are two-way contracts per definition, and i think he is a subject of entry-level contract till 2030 i think.

Guess we'll see. In any case, he will not be crossing the Atlantic on a two-way contract to entertain Grand Rapids fans.

Agreed. People may have wiped it from their memory but when Ed came up he didn't immediately look like a guy who belonged. He looked like a rookie getting his bearings.

He's playing great now so it's hard for me to complain about his development.

When everyone is healthy , keep Soderblom up. Kasper on the first line is not best scenario , but it's so beneficial for him. Maybe for next season
Elmer Kasper Berggren line

Lot of talk around here about improving the defense. I think it is much more likely Yzerman is looking to replace Holl, and not Chiarot.

McLellan already is dropping Holl's ice time and after tonight, he has to be losing patience.

Any RHD out there that don't have a lot of term? Don't want someone who could block up ASP for future years.

Faulk would be a pretty good add.

Chiarot-Seider
Edvinsson-Faulk
Gustafsson-Johansson

Would be good to have him on the 2nd PP over Gustafsson.

Next year:

Johansson-Seider
Edvinsson-Faulk
Chiarot-Gus/ASP

Any defenseman they get isn’t going to block ASP. Nobody who is available is a good 2nd pair RHD. We’d have to overpay significantly for that. Even so if we did get a guy like that, having someone like that on our 3rd pair would be wonderful.

Realistically if the wings want to improve this year and next year they have to do something about their second line. The possession metrics for the guys who are mainstays on the second line are genuinely horrible. Compher, tarasenko and PP specialist Kane are all not even close to earning their contracts right now. If the wings had a better third pairing and a legit 2nd line they would comfortably be a playoff team right now.

Some games back, the Wings broadcast showed a list of defensemen that had 100+ hits and 100+ blocked shots. It consisted of Seider and Gudas. That was it.

I’m sure if he were available, a legit playoff contender would outbid us, but I’d still give those Gudas tires a nasty kicking.

Connor Murphy from Chicago ain't all that bad. Someone mentioned Jan Rutta from SJ. Maybe Schenn from Nashville, although I hear he kinda sucks.

Trouba half retained?

I think it's pretty obvious that Lalonde had a lot of players scared shitless of making mistakes. It's easier to play when you can relax. Todd has said it a few times now for young players, "making mistakes is ok, we'll help you."
The ‘Lalonde Chapter’ in the Red Wings history books needs to have an asterisk, or simply have the pages torn out…Uncle Fester was a complete moron and IMHO the reason why this team regressed.

Ed and AlJo as our 2nd pairing is reminding me of Kronwall and Stuart.

Someone definitely is being traded.

But who?
Holl…

For a few dozen Tim Hortons fresh from the dumpster out back.

I shit you not, I just realized that Compher has been missing from the lineup for the last 4 games

Improve lineup? Then keep him out of it, apparently

Bring back Shine and sit Tarasenko. He is getting worse and worse. Cannot stand on two feet anymore and the puck is now a grenade to him

Watch him go off and score goals 300 and 301 and look like he's returning to a serviceable player until he crashes back down to whatever the hell he is right now. Buy him out, and trade for something decent this deadline, Stevie

Mentions: Talbot/Holl/Veleno.

Veleno, 25, has yet to carve out a consistent offensive role despite occasional top-line opportunities. He has 35 goals and 38 assists in 278 NHL games and remains a reliable bottom-six forward, but Detroit has a surplus of young centers like Marco Kasper, Nate Danielson, and Amadeus Lombardi ready to compete for spots.

This season, the former first-round pick has just five goals and nine total points across 46 games played.

Reports suggest teams like Buffalo, Anaheim, and Vancouver have shown interest, and a trade could give him a fresh start. If Yzerman is looking to retool the roster while keeping an eye on the future, these three players could be moved before the deadline.

A package around Veleno/Holl+ for Cozens/Zegras isn't crazy imo.

Idk if the goalies are in the picture but we'll see come TDL.

do let's trade our two worst players for some their serviceable players. that won't work.
