None of these cities should be paying anything for a new arena. Do what LA did with the NFL.

Maybe the professional leagues should commit to spending on one new stadium project a year for each of the teams. Let the owners pay for it. Every team gets a new stadium roughly every 30 years.

I agree but here in Calgary the city spent more money on a state of the art library than they would have for the original Calgary Next project (that would have come with new field house, rink and as a bonus creosote cleanup). I know which building I am more likely to go into, and only one of those businesses generates revenue and taxes. One creates more jobs than the other. Yet no public outcry over the library. Cannot have it both ways IMO (and that is not targeted at you)

So you justify a billionaire’s subsidy because of other “bad decisions”. Seems like a sunk cost fallacy to me.

Between a library and a stadium, you can argue both are needed yet only one would have the capacity to fund itself. I'm fine with tax dollars going to finance the one that can't.

where did I justify the subsidy?
My issue is with our city hall. I was not for public money being use but I am dissapointed the city has not stuck the agreement that was reached. City increased the cost of the project and then tells CSEC to pay for over run. I would be pissed to. It's par for the course so far with our new council.

Looks like Jonathan Bernier might be done for the year. Another year of rough goaltending ahead for the Devils.

2018-19: Kinkaid-broken Schneider
2019-20: Blackwood-broken Schneider-Domingue
2020-21: Blackwood-retired Crawford-Wedgewood
2021-22: Blackwood-broken Bernier-???

Yeah the Devils are a sorry excuse for a team this year. but at least they got hughes.

Glad the league is protecting the players from themselves.

While I'm personally glad about it, I'm certainly pissed if I'm, say, Drew Doughty, and I have a finite window to compete for my country on the biggest stage in the world, yet my employer is protecting their profits over my privilege to choose.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying there's a right or wrong answer here, but I think what Marchand is saying is eminently understandable.

Same way NHL teams will? Pull from the A?

Trickles down, though. Then you have to fill the AHL spots with ECHL refs...then...

I know it sounds/feels simple to protect the big league's interests but the NHL as an entity is much more solvent than the lower two leagues that are seemingly always in danger of losing franchises.

Yeah, I'd be pissed if I was Drew too, but at the same time there are several months out of the year that I can't leave my job to go travel for a couple of weeks either and I'm sure that's the case for many of us here. At the end of the day this is the players jobs, they have to make sure that they can show up and perform everyday just like you and I and they are compensated a hell of a lot for it.

Marchand saying what everyone's thinking.

Really, because this isn't what I was thinking at all about the decision not to send NHL players to the Olympics.

I think it's a joke that the CCP came out and said anyone testing positive while in China would be quarantined for 3-5 weeks, and that's just the start of my objections had they gone.

That's a different discussion entirely though.
