Vegas trying to push through the closing window. At best, Eichel is back at 100% next season I think, and everyone else is a year older. Kudos for them for going for it but they don't have a choice really, their pipeline is not impressive outside of Dorofeyev and Brisson . The cost of building a winner right away rather than stockpiling youth.

Jack Dugan looked decent the handful of times I watched him at Providence and he's had 35 points in 39 AHL games to start his pro career. Knee jerk thought was a Kevin Labanc-y type complementary guy.

I've caught a couple Michigan games this season to watch Luke Hughes and Brisson's looked quite good. I was preparing to laugh if Brisson had been the prospect to go in the deal instead of Krebs since Eichel hired Brisson's dad to push the process.

Glad Kings stayed away.Eichel is injured and rumors were Buffalo wasn't allowing teams to see the medical records.Eichel is probably not going to be the same and Vegas still took a risk.

Going to be interesting to see Eichel on a team with actual expectations and standards. Buffalo was a tire fire for awhile until he stopped showing up.

Interesting to see what cap gymnastics vegas will have to do this year and next once guys come off LTIR.

I'm sure they have thoughts/a solution in mind, but you would think teams around the league wouldn't be doing them any favors. Sure they 'only' lost a few assets today--but when fully healthy, that team is going to have to make a few more significant moves just to be compliant. It's gonna cost them a pretty valuable piece, think top six forward or top 4 dman. So they should recoup some value, too, but they are really putting their eggs in the Eichel basket.

People need to stop looking at this like Vegas bought a guy to keep open their cup window. This is a guy, who if he comes back healthy which Vegas is obviously thinking he will, who is only 25 and can be their top centre for a decade yet. They can still have him around for the next cup window realistically.

While this is true, they've traded away a lot of futures for the now. Eichel will always carry the injury with him and with any hit, it could be his last game. Its not like anyone gonna lighten up on him. No matter what team, you still need young cheap players to keep your cap down. Vegas really can't bring in these types without moving a big contract.

Yeah, they can. That'd be the rebuild they'll be going through after this cup window they have closes. It's no different than us when we locked ourselves into huge long term deals. It's seven years since we won the cup and we're coming out of the dark now. Vegas isn't in nearly as rough shape as we were with Richards having his issues, Brown's gross contract, Gaborik, Quick, etc. Vegas will have some juggling to do after this cap wise but only four guys are signed for five years or more after this season. They can retool fairly quickly really.

So far Vegas seems like a team that will never want a rebuild, their owner reminds me too much of Jerry Jones, but without any championships .His hands are all over the team, and it will always be win now, damn the future. As for those contracts, they were given after we'd won, not while trying to win. Gaborik's was the only issue I ever had, the other two were market value, just like today, except the guys getting paid now aren't coming off of SC wins.

He'll be around--who else will? He's headed for another Buffalo situation in a way, the major difference being right now he can just play since the leadership/team is established (BIG difference imo, i'm not trying to understate that). They were already having cap issues, and their roster isn't exactly young--and they jettisoned off most of the youth, and...

...with what picks?

It's hard to doubt them so far as everything they touch seems to work. But on paper...those guys are the 2016 Kings about to hit the cliff. Eichel is a move for now and later, it's a lot of the other moves for futures that are going to hurt.

Suppose it depends on when their guys come back as the cap hit is pro rated at the time of return so the later in the season, the better so long as they are in a playoff spot.

Thought I had read/heard somewhere (might have been Sportsnet 590 radio) that there was talk Stone could be out a majority of the season. Eichel might not start skating until March if all goes well. Not sure on Pacioretty.

I would think they would try to move one of Dadonov or Smith if they needed to make room.

In the off-season they can kiss McNabb, Janmark and Smith (if not dealt during the season) goodbye.

Makes you wonder why they took on Dadonov ($5 million per -2 years left) who was subpar in Ottawa the previous season. Hey, I love AMart as much as the next person but to pay him over $5 million per for 3 more years at 34 seemed like a mistake.

Wouldn't be surprised if they traded Brossoit in the off-season and brought up one of the kids as backup next year (Thompson or Ferguson). Karlsson is another one I could see go in the off-season via trade.

Anyhow, figuring out the Cap makes my head hurt but like you noted, they probably have run a bunch of different scenarios to plan for what is coming.

Brown wasn't market value, sorry. Maybe for a 2 year deal, not for the term we gave him. That was a reward contract. Not really my point though. The point I'm making is we knew at the time we'd have a hard time making those contracts work because of the term and would be in cap hell for a long time, largely due to the 10+ year deals that were signed before the CBA outlawed those (Carter and Quick namely). Vegas doesn't have that issue outside of maybe Pieterangelo and Stone, and even then they could get out if, in a worse case scenario, they retained salary.

I agree on the owner comment, but at some point you have to rebuild or you're just throwing money at a middling team that isn't achieving even the playoffs.

Other than a 1st this year and a 2nd next year they have almost a full compliment of picks, including a few extra mid-round picks. They certainly aren't as mortgaged as we were five years ago and look at our prospect pool now.

I'd say, just because they aren't tied into to many long-term deals they are better off than we were then, the real question is going to be how long do they go before retooling/rebuilding, as that will determine how long the rebuild is going to take.
