I want this kid to succeed. I love his effervescence and moxie. But I also love the humble pie Habs fans are having to eat over the combo of Danault/their centers struggling with harder minutes and Caufield not being Ovechkin out the gate, especially with how much I had to hit the mod buttons this summer.

Caufield seems like a likable guy. I'm just completely over:

- the media drooling over him like he's God's gift to hockey
- Kings fans bemoaning how "we should have taken him"
- people in general getting very defensive over criticisms levied against him
- Canadiens fans acting like the problem is everyone BUT Caufield. For example: Caufield's pedestrian numbers at the WJC were because the coach put him with "scrubs" like Boldy and Beniers, those "scrubs" not setting him up better. In Montreal, the coach is screwing up by not putting him on the top line with top powerplay time, etc.

At this point I'm just going to assume all board do this with their favorite fanboy, this one included.

The kid got a super hot stick in the playoffs. Good for him. I remember that happening with Chris Kontos many years ago.

Bettmans getting freaking roasted today in the press conference. Over the years I've actually come to appreciate what hes done (not a popular opinion I know) but hes completely lost the thread today. Embarrassing display.

Meanwhile Jets continue to avoid the media. Apparently Chipman had a "sick day".

I can't believe that some Jets fans want to stick with GM who covers up sexual assault, defends his coach when the coach uses racial slurs (and not only shuffles the player out of town with "disruptive tag, then buries the player in his new job) along with assistant GM who to this day defends Graham James. Pathetic.

10 games
1 Assist
1 point total.

Someone needs to call the Calder people and have them hold off on giving him the trophy . He was a lock , right..?

Just wow...Get rid of the entire lot, Bettaman, Daly and Fehr.

I usually defend Bettman, but I can't on this one.

Bettman needs to understand not just the moral aspect of this, but the optics as well.

I guess the "context" Bettman is referring to is that ownership was unaware (supposedly).

In my view, it was a hockey decision to not report/fire Aldrich, so there should be a hockey penalty to the organization as well. They should have a 1st round pick confiscated IMO. As well as the largest fine in league history (which wouldn't even be that much).

Bettman is trying to keep a lid on this by lessening the penalty (not much to see here folks).....but he's actually making it much worse. Not to mention tarnishing himself while he's at it.

Bettman should have fined them draft picks. That would have gotten their attention. or did he give the hawks the choice and they chose the $2 million fine?

My only thought on why the punishment was so little was maybe, in this case, it came from the board of governors themselves and it's an old boys club up there, so it was beyond Bettman. I highly doubt that but that's the only concept I can think of where Bettman didn't have a say in the fine. The only reason I question that is because I can't believe Bettman is that tone deaf (and Daly too) to think a $2 million fine is in any way adaquate, and he had to know past punishments would be used as a measuring stick and rightfully brought up. If he had any legitimate say in this fine and this is the number he arrived at, f*** him.

Your run of the mill billion dollar enterprise budgets around $25M for annual legal costs. It could be argued that the league’s $2M fine leaves more on the table for Beach’s settlement with the Blackhawks.

I'm not sure legal suit punishments are comparable to 'playing advantage' punishments. Not to defend at all what the Blackhawks have done--but it's easy to set the price at draft picks for what Arizona did since it was geared towards a playing edge rather than to put a financial amount on the off-ice abuse Chicago levied. I'm frankly not sure what an adequate punishment would be but most of it will be out of the scope of the NHL to rectify Beach et. al. I'm sure I could come up with something but it's just so gross I don't even want to try to put a dollar amount or whatever on it.

On the flipside, Bettman may not have been able to have a worse performance with his frank arrogance and irritation at being questioned. Instead of an opportunity for change and showing a sympathetic party, he basically just showed up in lawyer mode to protect the nhl's interests with a blunt ebenezer scrooge persona. The owners probably love it behind closed doors, that's his job, but what a f***ing asshole and you know everyone ELSE is coming for him and the NHLPA as of now. This incident and its handling is the match on the gasoline that has been pouring under the surface for the last few years as they tried to bury it all and Bettman's disgusting attitude towards that burial will find a more forward-thinking lead, sort of like Silver did in the NBA.

Bettman is a killer as a sports executive. The league is a secondary party to the Blackhawks scandal. He executed Quenneville and has teed up Chicago to get taken to the woodshed for 24+ months.

For this paltry cost he gains historical credibility for doling out judiciously expedient decisions. And he sets the stage for a scenario where he knifes Don Fehr as a farewell gift to the owners. This throws the NHLPA into further incompetence after they’ve already gone into massive debt to the owners with no near term CBA negotiations. My guess is Bettman rides out this season and we see Bill Daly get passed the buck.

One thing involved actual violations of contract rules and such with the game. The other was an internal matter that was mishandled, but the ultimate offender was removed. People are getting too emotional about this and misunderstanding the differences. Maybe they could increase the penalties in the next CBA.
