Kris Versteeg is about to be a free agent again. Due to insurance complications Versteeg is expected to return to North America this week.

It`s funny that he did`t get contract to any team. I bet he will go PTO for some team.

Perhaps the money was better there? or more opportunity to play ? who knows for sure

I think it was both, but he didn't count on not being in the NHLPA as far as the insurance issues.

Although fully healthy, Versteeg had hip surgery 4 yrs ago which may have prevented full coverage in Switzerland

Such an exciting talent just waiting to explode

Mark Scheifele, who trains with Connor McDavid in the summer, said McDavid is an even faster skater this season.

Dreger said that Versteeg's camp disagrees with this...

Why Kris Versteeg's contract w/ Bern was terminated was not insurance issue, he didn't pass the medical, writes @NZZ

World cup title won't be decided by shoot out goal in OT. Preliminary rounds 5 min OT in 3 x3 then shootout. But from semifinals onward, like the SC playoffs, play until someone scores. Which is how I should be.

I made a trip to Michigan to watch McDavid/Matthews play (in different games) back in September 2014. I found it funny that a handful of fans were hanging around the entrance to the bench for McDavid's autograph but none of them knew what McDavid looked like in street clothes. McDavid was standing there taping up a stick and nobody was bugging him since he looked like a typical awkward skinny teenager. Should be fun to see how he develops after a couple years of building strength/muscle.

@DarrenDreger theorizng on #Leafs Lunch that TOR could be interested in UFA Kris Russell on a 1 yr deal, that they could flip at the deadline

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger · 8m8 minutes ago

Pure radio fodder. However, Russell is in serious discussions with 8 teams and is expected to sign before camp.

I didn't think the count would be that high, given some teams that wanted him July 1 moved on.
Am curious at who will overpay and by how much

I hope we're not in on Russell, it wouldn't make sense financially and we already have plenty of competition for those bottom 2 pairs.

Russell sounds exactly like this year's Cody Franson. Thought he could 5x5 on the open market, but was met with underwhelming offers. About this time last year, Franson settled on his two year deal with Buffalo.

I imagine Russell is in a similar boat. His camp mentioned that at least one interested team would have to make cap space in order to fit Russell, but I couldn't help but think that was an agent trying to pump up an artificial market.

Russell won a couple of WHL championships under Willie Desjardins, so maybe Vancouver would be interested. I'd be curious if Russell/his agent might prefer a one year deal at this point if only to avoid being a potential Vegas pick.

Setoguchi will be on a PTO at the Kings camp this year, interesting

Setoguchi had a PTO with Toronto last season. He seemingly rubbed everybody the wrong way during his last NHL stint in Calgary, but Setoguchi eventually came around to accepting responsibility: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...ber-drink-chance-mike-babcock-lou-lamoriello/

From a different interview from about a year ago:

"First off, I have to say thanks to Calgary anyway. They gave me a chance. I told them going into camp that I was straight, I was going to stay sober for the year and not drink. That lasted all of a couple weeks. There’s a lot of things that went on there that were all me and my problems. I didn’t really take advantage of an opportunity with a team like Calgary. That was tough for me because I had a lot of expectations. I had a good summer of training but not quite as good as I have had this summer. I just went in there and had a crappy attitude. It was the coach’s fault, and then it was the guys’ I was playing with fault. Once I got sent down, it was everybody else’s fault. It was never my fault, and that’s when things turned bad. There was a lot of things in my head that I just needed to clear up; personal problems."

Don't recall Setoguchi really challenging for a spot on the Leafs, but no big risk in a PTO. Kings have a couple of split squad games during preseason, so Setoguchi could be a warm body for those.

Is the LA Kings Key to Success Their Forward Depth? by Jason Lewis

Link

Depends on who that 'forward' depth' is. Purcell is a nice addition to the bottom 6 (I don't see him as top 6) but like any forward coming into Sutter's system, the offensive output is second to being defensively responsible. Currently, Andreoff, Brown, King, Lewis, Nolan, Clifford, and Dowd and combinations thereof are a large part of the reason the Kings have 1 playoff win in the last 2 seasons. Good puck possession in Sutter's system doesn't mean goals produced by bottom tiered players. Lewis said in an interview 2 yrs ago that his job was to keep the enemy trapped in their own end until the top lines get a breather. I like what I saw of Mersch but in Sutter's suffocating system, I don't expect a boatload of goals.

The competition in the division and conf. changes, and it becomes ,more challenging over 82 to be competitive and successful consistently. If they don't make any changes to the bottom 6, they remain a top heavy team leading far too much on Kopi, Carter, TT to produce. If any of them slumps or gets injured, out for a extended period, there's isn't hole that won't be filled.

Well now we are giving PTO to Setoguchi? well if the wheel falls of they all could be traded for picks, lot´s of 1 year deals.
Long term injury to one of these Kopitar/Carter/Doughty/Quick and it will fall...

Chris Johnston ‏@reporterchris · 3h3 hours ago

Jonathan Huberdeau has agreed to a $35.4M, six-year extension with #FlaPanthers. That's a $5.9M AAV.

Good deal...
