The 2015 Kings couldn't beat the Flames and couldn't beat the Oilers in order to save their playoff chances.

They were pretenders in 2015, just as they were pretenders in 2016.

Remember how we used to mock teams for only being built for regular season success? Guess what, that's what the Kings have become now. They're good enough to be competitive during the regular season now.

They haven't won a playoff round since winning the Cup in 2014. That's two years ago. Let that fact sink in a little bit.

Ziggy, what would it take for the team to shed its concurrent "Pretender" status?

At least win a series, or better yet, advance to the WCF, but that may be asking for too much out of this lineup as it is.

Yep. In my mind, there are four contenders every year, the final four teams that make it to the conference finals. Everyone else is a pretender.

People have done a lot of hoop jumping around here to hold on to the glory years. Those years are gone, period. The roster as it stands today isn't any more proven than the roster in 2010. They have past championships, sure, but like Ziggy said, 2014 was two years ago.

The Kings are a bubble team until they prove otherwise. And the Hawks are right there with them, as far as I'm concerned.

NY Rangers sign Brandon Pirri to a 1 yr deal. 1.1M

Good pickup for them...80 pts in 166 games, still fairly young and plays wing and center. Will give their bottom 6 some depth.

Also, Avs new coach is Jared Bednar,

The 44-year-old Bednar won the American Hockey League's Calder Cup championship as coach of the Lake Erie Monsters last season. He also won the ECHL's Kelly Cup in 2009 with the South Carolina Stingrays.

I thought he just accepted a PTO somewhere. (EDIT: never mind I thought that was Brandon Prust who signed a PTO with the leafs, piri is a good pick up)

Agreed but advance stats do not care about 3 on 3. Also how do you view two years ago. I think it was a fluke they missed the payoffs due to a **** shootout record.

You could also add the The Flames crazy 3rd period comeback record. That was a fluke. They had 10 comeback wins after trailing going into the 3rd, most of those games down by 2 or more. By comparison , the Kings had 3. The day Voynov got suspended, it put a black cloud over the team that they never got out from under.

Trade upcoming...AZ and FLA.

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 22m22 minutes ago

ARIZ/FLA working on a deal that will send David Bolland and Lawson Crouse to the Coyotes for a second and third pick...

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 21m21 minutes ago

FLA creates flexibility, opens up cap room and drops its roster from 49 contracts to 47 (of the maximum 50)...

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 20m20 minutes ago

ARIZ, for taking Bolland contract, gets Crouse, a good prospect. Believe the higher pick will be whichever is better of ARIZ/DET 2nd in 2017

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 13m13 minutes ago

Let me fix: FLA gets better of 2017 third between ARIZ/DET picks and 2018 second.

Another good ,move by the Yotes new GM, Crouse is a stud. Yotes stockpiling young talent
I was hoping that draft that the Flyers would somehow get him. a 6'4 , 220 lb skilled winger is a good thing~

Oh to have what seems like unlimited cap space...

3 dead contracts over 18 mil? This franchise can't even turn a profit, yet can take on so much money.

Not sure what's impressive about the Coyotes going the Oilers' route.

They're not going the "Oilers route', not even close.

And the new GM has made some very smart decisions, they have a great group of young players that they some (strome, Dvorak) should make the team this year and the others will continue to grow their game. A rebuild does require changes, and they are doing that. They have leadership, a map and a plan.

agreed. The oielrs route was winning draft lottery after lottery and rushing their prospects.

The Coyotes seem to not be rushing their guys by making them play top minutes right away (Duclair is a good example). Also Arizona is using their cap space to bring in additional higher end prospects where as Edmonton just tried to rely on their own first round picks.

So far if I am a coyote fan I am pretty thrilled with what is being done.

Some tidbits from around the league

Nash--Now that Vesey and Pirri on on board, the Rangers are back to trying to move Nash, before the seasons starts if possible, and several teams have inquired this past week (Ducks (Fowler , Lindholm possibly (w/8 d on the roster and no contract in place Lindholm could go) Sabres and Devils) and others mildly interested (sens, habs , blues) depending on the price.

Eric Gryba- Has a few PTO offers he's deciding on.

Kris Russell- has a short list and waiting for the interested party to clear cap space.

Jacob Trouba- contract talks not just about money, about role. And Jets leaning towards bridge deal, his camp LTC. Jets still inclined to sign but might take some time.

Feeling old dept - 50 yrs ago today, Bobby Orr signed his first pro contract.

Bouwmeester replaces Duncan Keith on Team Canada- okay, i get that maybe they didn't go Subban or LeTang because they wanted another leftie. But I think I'd have gone with Giordano instead. TJ Brodie , a bit young but a good leftie.

Nash in Anaheim please god no!! I think it's a perfect fit but that will be scary as all hell.

I agree I would have gone Gio or Brodie over Bouwmeester

The Ducks have a bunch of RFA's still to sign and adding a declining player with 7.8 mil cap hit won't help.

They are already a young team and making moves to go younger. Veterans they are taking on are useless, so they expect a very young core to lead the charge.

They are savvy moves from an HF perspective. That doesn't mean they are building correctly.

There's some great young cores coming up with Florida, Arizona, Dallas, Edmonton, Buffalo, and Carolina (underrated). These are the future teams that will be going deep into the playoffs.

I think that team got better as the year went on, and picking up Teuvo Teravainen, will help them and Stempniak to a lesser extent. Could be Rask continues to improve. I was impressed with both Hanifin and Faulk last year. But they should have solidified their goaltending. Not sure why they inked Ward, unless they felt they owed it to him but that is the weakspot.
I liked what Peters did behind the bench, he has them going in the right direction. And they have some good prospects in the system.

I guess that depends on what your definition of 'building correctly' is. For me, as a hockey fan for too many years to count, the heart and soul of a strong team is smart drafting, building your core thru drafting and harvesting your own talent. You make trades to add to that crop, that's a good thing (like picking up Crouse this week).
They have both veterans (not useless) leading the way and young players who are growing into that role. It's going to be a popular move by more NHL teams, esp in light of the salary cap.
THey are not rushing players who aren't ready but allowing those who are to learn , grow and contribute. They had 3 rookie forwards last year who had 120 points. That's impressive. And I think Strome and Dvorak have a good shot at making the team. And they have a surplus of good prospects if they need to use to make a trade or move up in the draft.
They will continue to improve this year and beyond, that's how it works.

To me, the difference between the Yotes and Oilers examples is that Strome and Dvorak would have played on Edmonton last year where Arizona is grooming appropriately.

This could be intriguing.

He is from Edmonton and was drafted by Chiarelli and Edmonton also needs RD.
So my logic says Lombardi`s got this covered.

He went to Edmonton. 22 years old R handed defenceman.

GM Lombardi is best off landing and filling D needs as priority.

After all, D is the biggest hole right now. I'm pretty sure Matt and Rob will make themselves as very fine trainers in Ontario 91764 until their full recovery.
