Meanwhile Clarke is a shark playing with his food while Elder skates around in concrete against McDavid

Edler.

Not good tonight.

Not only does a former Kings prospect do what “only McDavid type players” do by jumping straight into the NHL without AHL games, but he makes a play that everyone in the hockey world is talking about.
My biggest wonder is how many people who downplayed the price LA played will begin acknowledging what a great player Faber is quickly showing himself to be on the big stage (because apparently the Olympics weren't enough).

Faber is a similar caliber prospect to Luke Hughes and Brandt Clarke. I remember you got a lot of grief on here for saying he was right there with Clarke, but I think you were a spot on.

It would be interesting to see what the reaction would have been had it been Clarke and a 1st being sent to Minnesota, I don’t think it would have been received as well.

Clarke was an #8 overall (2021), Faber was #45 overall (2nd round 2020), Clarke still has a higher upside regardless of what Faber is doing right now, Getting a top winger (Fiala) was always going to cost a great prospect. Faber was one of the younger draftees in 2020 , if he was born a month later he would have been an easy 1st in 2021 but would he have been top 10 like Clarke ? who knows.

He wouldn't have been in desperation mode if he had spent time in the AHL learning positioning.
I know it's a joke, but Faber WAS out of position on that play. It's a spectacular recovery, but he got turned around which is why the play looked so impressive. Just like a goalie overcommitting and making it back across to make the save.

All that said, that's what young players do. More, that's how they learn to get better. They need to have an opportunity to screw up and make plays. Faber is going to learn more from that than anything he'd get from the AHL.

He was in the slot defending the cross-ice pass and the goalie couldn't control the rebound. Aside from gluing himself to the Stars player and risking interference, there was little wrong with that position.

What was Fabers +/- ? That’s all that matters. Anything less than +5 sucks.

(last +/- ‘joke’, I promise… probably)

The current +/- running joke reminds me of that Seinfeld episode with the “Heeeellllooooooooo” stomach.

Btw, it doesn’t ever get old.

I don’t know if draft position really matters, Faber was criminally under drafted. From the moment he stepped on the ice in a high level of hockey he was a big time difference maker.

You don’t win back to back B10 d-man of the year over blue chippers like Power and Hughes, make the Olympic team over established KHL pros at 19 and jump right into the league without being really elite.

I am not arguing the trade wasn’t needed, but it was not some huge steal.

He drifted too far over, he was definitely a stride or two out of position. There is zero reason to cross the center of the slot with a backchecking forward - moving across the slot to the other side is not the responsibility of the D. That's the responsibility of the forward as he already is moving in that direction with speed.

As soon as he hit the hash marks he should have slowed and picked up the player coming in. The puck was outside the dot, so any shot from there is meant to generate a rebound. Had he done that he simply would have to tie up the forward coming in, making the play much less dangerous. If that shot is a fraction of an inch higher it goes in.

But one hell of a recovery, very Doughty-esque with the dive there. His reflexes and stick work are definitely as advertised.

The Kings have been money in the 2nd round for a long time now. Faber is just another in a long list of guys that should have been in the first round. It's amazing how they can identify these type of guys and fail on a lot of first rounders.

League should reduce the available caphit of the next regular season for however much they were over during the post season. There's gotta be some penalty for being over the cap during playoffs.

I think I said it already in this thread, but to me the easiest fix is just making sure your gameday roster is cap compliant.

That way, you don't punish a team for making a pickup while a guy is on indefinite LTIR, but you don't also get the double benefit of the injured player coming back in full, you at least have to sit some cap.
