Ottawa having to decide within 24 hours of the draft lottery seems a little peculiar. When the Devils were penalized for the Kovalchuk contract, they had 48 hours from when the Cup Finals was finished.

Ottawa made the conference finals in 2017 and picked #28. But had they been eliminated in the first two rounds, their first rounder would have been #19. Maybe not as huge a difference at that point if they're in the playoffs, but I wonder if the league might revise that.

But in the end all NJ got was a 6 mil fine, 3 mil was returned along with the 1st they were suppose to forfeit. Lou ran out the clock until they could get a hearing and appeal, and what do you know, they won.

" via the Hockey News:
The other strange part of this is it puts into question whether Devils GM Lou Lamoriello knew all along that he would get the first round pick back. When Lamoriello kept the 29th overall pick in 2012 to take Stefan Matteau instead of forfeiting it, the decision was curious. Today's decision sheds new light on that call, though, and makes you question the NHL's motives in overturning the penalty.

"The League intends to have no further comment on this matter," was the final line in today's press release.

The way the NHL completely overlooked these circumventing scenarios when the 2004-05 CBA was struck and how it handled the Devils in 2010 and today is more ridiculous than the Kovalchuk contract ever was."

The 2014 1st got bumped from 11th to 30th as part of the penalty instead of forfeiting it outright. Might have been the difference between a Kevin Fiala / Dylan Larkin versus John Quenneville. Although with how our drafting was going at the time, I don't think I would have had the confidence that they would have gotten that pick correct.

Might be some settlement going on, i'm no lawyer but non-disclosure is a pretty serious issue

I was wondering about this exact possibility. If I'm Andlauer, I'm continuing to light matches in the court of public opinion. Non-disclosure of these types of investigations during a billion dollar sale is bonkers. In Pinto's case, they MAY be able to prove it happened afterwards, but the Dadonov trade issue happened over a year ago.

I'd be furious given the light precedent set by the Chicago Kyle Beach and the NJ Kovalchuk penalties as well.

He seems like a bitch to me. How much value does a single draft pick in a single year have in the grand scheme of a billion dollar transaction? Practically none. It'd be like buying a 10 million dollar home and then being pissed at the seller that you have to replace the fridge.

If the fridge fails after you buy it, no big deal

If the owner hides knowledge that your 10k fridge is going to fail, that's a little different.

Man, San Jose sucks. I mean really, really sucks.

I really wanted to find a gif for this, but there isn't a gif that sucked enough to do it justice. They could seriously challenge their terrible second season after expansion.

Has a sports franchise owner ever sued a previous owner for something like this? If it was hidden with the intent of concealing it from typical due diligence they would probably have a case.

I'm kind of interested in it because it begs some questions--like, what's the potential financial value of a first round pick? Or of a 41-game suspension of a highly-thought-of prospect middle six center? How 'damaging' are those things to franchise value/image?

I see why Andlauer is pissed, not because those things exist, but because they were concealed--and Dorion obviously knew better.

It's going to get late early for the Oilers if they don't start turning things around
Last year was their best chance.

I expected them to fall off somewhat this year, but I certainly didn't expect this. They should turn things around, but they are worse than the Kings in goal so that's not guaranteed. I expect Woodcroft will be gone in the next 2 weeks without a drastic turnaround. Holland maybe as well.

And the Wild are finally playing like I thought they would last year.

Canucks so far putting up a 9 spot on SJ.

9-0 with 15 min left in the 3rd.

Sharts looking like they will be shut out for the 3rd time this season in 10 games.

I can't believe my filthy mouth, but it does speak to how much Karlsson can carry a team offensively.

Goddamn that felt dirty.
I mean all he did last year was lift them out of the Bedard sweepstakes. They were still atrocious last year.

Would be hard pressed to find a Norris winner where most fans of that team would probably prefer they didn't play on their team that season.

Buddy played close to 0 minutes worth of meaningful hockey last season.
