They've selected 6 goalies in the 7 drafts since 2017. Plus Peterswn and now Portillo. You can say they suck at developing(and/or picking the wrong guy) but that's a new goalie in the system every year on average. At a position where it's either play or sit, with no in between.
This is why the changes for goalie scouting and development earlier this summer are so important.

AT leaST the matt villalta experiment is finally over

The amount of time and resources spent on that guy blocking anyone else of a good shot when damn near everyone saw a neverending block of swiss cheese is a big shame in retrospect, though it's not like the others have availed themselves yet either.

There wasn't anyone he was blocking though, the organization has been laughably bad at bringing in goaltenders, he was the only younger guy at Ontario that even had a prayer of being an NHL'er (and I agree it wasn't much more than that).

Even with Portillo, for those of you who wished for a return of Roman Cechmanek, you may get your wish. Portillo won't be able to play in the NHL if he doesn't figure out how to move more fluidly, and be able to stay on his skates. A decade ago I'd trust the Kings to be able to fix those issues, but lately the results have been poor.

I believe Copley can do everything we need, while Talbot can do well enough in the backup role. We saw a large enough sample size with Copley last year to have some pretty good confidence in him. I think he will also benefit from having what I expect to be an-all around better defensive corps.
I think Talbot is interesting because so much depends on his fitness. Last year he was ‘meh’ but in the 3 previous seasons he had 91%+ save averages and a decent GAA in a decent sample size of 108 games. Chuck in 7 shutouts and a 63-30-10 record and maybe he does ok for us. Sure he dipped last year but it was not a good Ottawa side.

Whilst I’m not expecting him to channel prime Hasek it may not be the disaster everyone is predicting. Copley could easily end up the backup.

I'm really surprised Bouchard signed for so cheap.

He didn't have much leverage without the threat of an offer sheet. A team would have to give Bouchard something outlandish for Edmonton not to match. Teams currently with more than 3.9 mil in cap space.

Montreal* (6.7 mil assuming LTIR) - Probably not willing to risk an unprotected 1st, missing their own 2nd so they couldn't offer in the < 4.29 mil range.
Arizona (3.9 mil) - Probably not willing to risk an unprotected 1st
San Jose (3.99 mil) - Probably not willing to risk an unprotected 1st
Columbus (4.73 mil) - Already have four expensive RHD plus Jiricek in the AHL
Detroit (5.15 mil) - Went cheap for Petry instead, missing 3rd round pick so they could only offer 4.29 max AAV.
Nashville (7.9 mil) - Already have four expensive RHD
Buffalo (8.77 mil) - 8D signed, they traded away Lyubushkin to alleviate log jam. Have to give Dahlin/Power raises for next year
Chicago (12.8 mil) - Have three expensive RHD, probably not moving unprotected 1st yet
Anaheim (16.6 mil) - Zegras/Drysdale RFA, probably not moving unprotected 1st

Lou managed to sign Noah Dobson (same draft class as Bouchard) to a 3x4 mil deal last summer when Dobson was fresh off a 51 point season. So that might have been a comparable that Edmonton was pointing at.

surprised he would go for only 4 years, would think he could have squeezed those extra 3-4 years out without much question

guess he's counting on being worth even more than that when the cap goes up over the next few

Mark Yannetti has told us multiple times about the Kings attempting to acquire talented young goalies who looked at the Kings depth chart and said no.

I would love to know how many teams (since the 67 expansion) have drafted and developed franchise players (goalies or otherwise) and then while those players were still active, found their replacements and had a smooth transition from one era to another.
I’m sure the list is small.

The situation was not helped by this management teams refusal to transition at all until it was so blatantly obvious that it was the move.

Photoshopped or not the Cryotes have worse storms on the horizon.

The only time I watch Matthews is during the playoffs, and when LA plays Toronto.

I'm rarely impressed. But the numbers and underlying metrics are undeniable.

If the league didn't fix Toronto to get the first pick and Matthews, then they should have fixed it so Arizona got him.

Almost all of Austin Matthew's contract is paid out in bonuses.

He'll be getting a 15.9M payment on July 1st. I wonder how it feels seeing that go into your bank account?

He's getting paid
Year 1 16.7M
Year 2 15.2M
Year 3 11.1M
Year 4 10M

well, that's interesting. ESPN has sucked from day one and Gary for all his postering how great the partnering will be, has to be worried.
And the broadcasts have been bush league. Terrible audio, and awful unprofessional announcing.
