I think Wilson will be fine since this was his first season with injury issues....mostly due to an ACL issue from the prior playoffs.
I think the last couple years of his deal will be like Dustin Brown's.

For me that means ugly when every other fanbase looks at it but worth it as a fan of his team.

Terrible contract. That team is going to struggle, and age jokes wouldn't even do them justice. They have 1 guy under 23 on their roster and 9 guys over 30. Oshie and Backstrom are salary suckers who aren't contributing much.

Next years Pens:

Karlsson (33) -- $10M
Crosby (36) -- $8.7M
Malkin (37) -- $7.1M
Letang (37) -- $6.1M

yikes!
Unsure about Malkin, didn't follow him much last year, but the other three basically all played up to their contracts the past season.

A defense led by Karlsson and Letang, what could possibly go wrong? At least they have a consistent solid goalie back there with Jarry:help: at the very least they will be entertaining. I look forward to wagering them to miss playoffs

And Ty Smith

I mean they'll have the goals! Gonna be one of those teams you'll never feel safe against

Surprisingly I'm not sure Smith cracks their top six right now. They've moved on from the three D (Dumoulin/Petry/Rutta) who led their team in PK time last year. Ryan Graves will take over duties on PK1 but I'm not sure who's joining him. Chad Ruhwedel might get the nod over Smith if only because he's right handed and theoretically can kill penalties. Smith was useful on the Devils when he was getting PP time, but he won't be getting that with Karlsson and Letang higher on the totem pole.

Another example of, you win the Cup, the players get rewarded when the time comes.
With the cap the way it is its near impossible to stay on top for long. The stars go from 6/7 million to 9/10 million after they win.
That means you lose some of the next tier of skill/role players to free agency because you cant afford them.
Even if Pittsburgh or Tampa drafted superbly you cant just replace guys like Kunitz Kessel Gourde with a 19 year old and be the same team.
Also have to factor in guys that fall off after giving it their all on the cup runs like Richards and Tyler Johnson.
Its really hard to manage with the cap and long term contracts and it seems no gm has really figured it out yet. They draft some star players and build around them for two decades.

I don't think getting Karlsson even necessarily makes the Pens a playoff team. That division is really tight and they just get older.

He's never been a great defensive player, but he's not 0% either IMO.

I think playing on a team where nothing mattered, he probably didn't even try and play defense. In Pitt, I assume he'll actually put in effort on the defensive side.

Isn't that why context matters in any metric though?

Compared to his peers, who had to try and play defense, he was a no-show on a major aspect of his position. And as a result, he was able to excel offensively.

So the Penguins will either try to outscore their problems, meaning we can expect more of the same. Or he'll need to put other efforts in.

Well that's why I thought he didn't deserve the Norris.

I get that 100 points is a tremendous accomplishment, but he's playing "risk free" hockey on a bottom feeder team. The other Norris nominees are playing pressure hockey where they have to worry about making a mistake. They can't purely focus on offense, pinch whenever they want, and forget about playing D.

It gets on my nerves sometimes how the media/fans give certain players the free pass. I bet had Karlsson never played for a Canadian team, he would be more heavily criticized for his defense.

In 2008-09, Mike Green scored 31 goals. Outscored every other defensemen by a wide margin while only playing 68 games. On a contending team. I remember much of the media and fans rolling there eyes at him even being nominated for the Norris. Yet Karlsson gets the free pass (mostly).
