It's a popularity contest. There's no real criteria to go over to make the case because in the end all that is required is members of the media to vote for you or leave you off a ballot entirely to spite you. I stopped caring about the Norris when Doughty lost to Karlsson because he had less 2nd place votes.

Karlsson played really godo defense when games matter the most. He was unreal in Sweden's Gold medal and when the Sens went to the Eastern Final.
Not sure if he can still find that level defensively but it is there.

fair, to speak to this further the year Doughty did when it seemed like a year long PR campaign.

i think it's gone from his game personally, he got away with that elite hand-eye pass interception skill for a long time but those days have passed. he's just not mobile enough any more to "sorta" get in the lanes and pick pucks off

If Pittsburgh gets in I wonder if he elevates. Would not write him off, talent usually prevails.

Dubas has done more for Pittsburgh already than Hextall/Burke did the whole time they were there.

Agreed. There has always been a somewhat passive aggressive campaign among Kings fans to denigrate any part of Karlsson’s game to prop up Doughty.

Karlsson is closer to Doughty defensively than Doughty has ever been to Karlsson offensively. They’re both HoF level defenseman, but Karlsson’s ability to dominate a hockey game in possession and production cannot be understated.

I think a lot of it was because for a while it seemed like Doughty was underrated and Karlsson was everyone. Some Senator fans were dicks about it too.

Is the case for me anyway.

Like most great players in the west, Doughty was probably slightly overrated by his own fanbase, and underrated by everyone else.

Doughty got the Kopitar treatment.

No one was paying attention while he was being amazing, then they rubberbanded hard. He went from underrated to overrated back to underrated in the span of 3-4 years.

Kind of OT, but the Orioles pulled one of their pbp guys from the booth for the awful offense of pointing out the teams poor record season vs Tampa, who they are battling for the division lead.

I guess this is what fans want now? Is this the reason for Jim Fox’s massive turn the last decade from an objective analysis into a homer on level with Hayward? Is this directed by the various teams who just want cheerleaders in the booth, instead of people who may actually point out when the team is playing poorly? Almost all the new pbp and analysts around all sports cheerleaders. It’s a far cry from what those of us who grew up in SoCal got to listen to with the Big 3. They wanted the team to win but each guy was objective and fair when the team wasn’t. 20 years later and we’d rather have Jack Edwards, Tyson Nash and Rex Hudler types

I wish all broadcasts just had the rink sounds, the 2019 Frozen Four did this and it was great.

It sounds like it was driven by ownership being sensitive about being cheap on the roster for so many years, not fan complaints.

From what I've read, it seems more about tiny dick energy from ownership who doesn't like the failings of the organization pointed out.

Which, again, is why I strongly encourage people to follow the media personalities they resonate with. I know I contribute for Hoven, and heck, I wish you all would follow him, but I know he's not everyone's cup of tea.

But media personalities are at the mercy of organizations and owners to continue to give them access. They could lose access if they bite the hand that feeds them.

Is it right? Well, no. But I'd rather form my own opinion based on the information provided to me from people with access than to have fewer people with access and give us diluted info anyway.

These are the actual comments?

If so, I don't think you can blame this suspension on some larger narrative about fans wanting homer announcers. The segment was completely banal. It was accompanied by graphics which means it was clearly planned out ahead of time with the producer of the broadcast.

I suspect there was more to this. I can't imagine someone being suspended over just this.

Brown pointed out during the on-air broadcast on MASN that the Orioles had won more games at Tampa Bay’s Tropicana Field in 2023 than the last three years combined. The comment was backed up in the July 23 game notes, which are put together by the team’s public relations staff. “The Orioles have won three of the first five games at The Trop this season after winning three of the 21 games played in St. Petersburg from 2020-22,” the game notes said.

Despite it being in the game notes, ownership took exception to Brown pointing it out, sources said, believing it made them sound cheap. Baltimore ranks 29th in Major League Baseball in payroll.

Herby, LA announcers were top 4!
Miller, Hearn, Scully…..and Enberg.
Enberg did Angels, Rams and UCLA basketball when I was a kid before he went national.
The brilliance of these four men was they taught you the game as well as called the action.
I really noticed the difference when I moved to Chicago in 1983 and was shocked by all the homer announcers who never taught their audience anything. The only exception was the excellent baseball color man Steve Stone.

Haha, honestly I enjoyed listening to Hawk when I was in Chicago, because I accepted that it just switched over from a drama to a straight up comedy in the booth. Much like it was on the North Side with Harry Carray, who I remember watching as a kid. They really weren’t even trying to be professional or objective in any way. If I were a fan of those teams and had to listen to it 82 or 162 times a year my opinion might be different.

I was to young to remember Enberg on anything other than NFL and tennis, but he’s my dads 2nd favorite pbp guy after Keith Jackson.

I used to like announcers when they were drunk. Seemed to happen more than you might think.
I dont think alcohol is his problem, but Jim Fox is becoming more and more incoherent to me- "and those types of things."
