Hot take, but I wish the NHL went to shorter terms and lowered UFA age. Max 5 year extensions (if re-signing, 4 if UFA), and UFA age at 26.

This would drive a LOT of roster movement around the league and make for a more exciting, unpredictable product year to year.

The NHL as it stands now gets by on the strength of the sport alone. Most of the teams around the league are completely frozen by the hard cap, and it makes things boring as hell.

Either do something like a franchise tag, or reduce contract terms.
Do away with no cut contracts, just like the NFL.

I'm fine with giving a player the term they can get in an open market. What I'd like to see is the NHL implement two things.

Have the cap temporarily increase at trade deadline some percentage or amount to allow for more trade movement.
The ability to buy out one contract a year and not have it count against the cap. The team is still on the hook for the cash. I think you'd see some more movement, which is exciting for fans

Not Hockey related but...
I have often wondered if this sort of thing would/could/does happen. Fitting it is a Vegas team, makes me question the Raiders too.

How do they even have a salary cap in that league?

Earnestly trying not to start an argument here - my politics are pretty clear and I'm not trying to say what "should" or "shouldn't" be league mandatory...

but why is St. Patrick's Day mandatory? It's an odd choice. Of the traditional, US-celebrated/commercially-driven holidays, this seems to get the least amount of fanfare. Not even Christmas, Halloween, or anything like that is mandated?

If I had to guess probably been in the league for forever because someone like Frank Calder was Irish or some shit. But yeah, weird.

I think it stems back to the O6 and Boston and Chicago being big on St Patty's Day.

i just think the PA wouldn't allow it

i agree, it's just the feasibility of it.. i like guaranteed contracts but the GMs don't respect them because they rarely have to answer for the downturn. it would be nice if there were rules to prevent them from handcuffing franchises like that.

part of me just feels like if they're term-locked, they're just gonna juice the shit out of the AAV then suddenly we're the NBA with a star or two and a bunch of bums shuffling around the league constantly

Boy, Whyshynski sure has been tweeting non-stop on the subject for the last couple of weeks as well as going on the radio/podcast your talking about this. He seems obsessed with what teams do and don’t do on pride night.

I always found the green jerseys the Hawks wear on St. Patrick’s day to be quite ugly.

The other jerseys are also optional, not mandatory (according to the NHL). As all of these practice jerseys should be. If the players choose not to support Pride or the US military that should be up to them, and they then can deal with any criticism or praise they are given.

Don’t know why people care so much about special jerseys. To be fair i find it corny when they wear different jerseys because it’s pretty pointless to me what players wear. Even the military jerseys are stupid. I don’t have any leaning with politics so I find all this social awareness just a pretty shallow PR stunt. Don’t know why people care so much. I’ll even extend an olive branch, rather than honor the trillion vets at a hockey game maybe the army should focus better treating the soldiers who risk their well being.

I’m not gonna give a political take I just don’t like this across the board.

If the PA were smart they would. Short contracts and less restrictive UFA rules have turned the NBA into a league almost entirely controlled by the players.

I’m not saying the NHL should go that far (though it would be super interesting). But the PA has to understand that these long contracts, while providing a measure of security, also hamper a player’s ability to always earn close to market value, as well as compete for championships.

Also, in before the “this is why the NBA sucks the same couple super teams are always winning.” That’s not true and hasn’t been for a while.

This, and there is a LOT of Irish descended folks in those cities. New York has the most of all, tons came over during the famine. It's embedded in the culture there. There are a lot of Irish neighborhoods in Queens especially, which is on the island.
I wonder when it became league mandated though. I always figured New York, Chicago, and Boston did their own thing anyway. We do Armenian night, but I'm pretty sure the rest of the league doesn't.

It's worth the question, because its' emblematic of how many of these 'traditions' are simply relics of a bygone era. St Patty's being 'mandated' seems silly if relatively.

I DO think though, if the LEAGUE message is "hockey is for everyone" (which according to the above stuff says the league has abandoned that message) you can't really half-ass that. But that's just my opinion. You should abandon that if you can't/don't/won't/shouldn't mandate it because the mixed messages are worse.

Nothing is mandated, which IMO is correct.

Although I'm sure Wyshynski will come up with a reason that Military Night shouldn't be mandated but Pride should.

We wonder why the league doesn’t connect with the casual fan… they are so detached from the real world.

ok, read the rest of the thread so not mandatory.

I do think though that teams need to think about the causes they support. We talked about needing casual fans but also new younger fans. There is a generation coming up where some of these causes (wrongfully derided as woke) do matter to them, hugely. Ignoring my political views, it makes sense from a business standpoint to start supporting them.

It’s why I’m sure there is a 100% support of the military nights because not doing so would be awful for business, let alone personal reputations. An individuals personal view won’t be considered on that one and nobody is going to start a public spat over it. In time business will drive changes in the attitude to some of these other things.
