What a joke of a franchise. IDGAF if all 5 of their fans come here and rip on the Leafs for not winning in the playoffs no franchise in pro sports functions like this or has a stadium that is 25% of the size of the standard capacity.

I don't know how Bettman continues to rationalize having them stay there. The only way I can ever see them start to think about it is having a top draft pick (#6 this year?) pull an Eric Lindros to Quebec. And more then that publicly be like this franchise is a joke and I'm not playing there period. The bad press will start to worry him.

Not winning in the playoffs, or getting booted from your arena, only to end up playing in an OHL sized rink. It's a tough choice...

I'll start this out by saying I know frank has had some stupid takes lately but if true I feel for Calgary.

Calgary should go full rebuild if these guys are all gone. Markstrom will probably want out too.

These player reports about Calgary suggest that this offseason has the potential to make the events of the previous offseason look like a maintaining of the status quo in comparison!

flames should teared it down last off season instead of retooling. Could've increased their chances for bedard.

Their ownership likely won't like the sound of that. If the new GM is lucky he'd be able to plead his case for 1 retool season. But owners will want playoff games as they gear up for a new arena and have always been wary of rebuilds

This Calgary Flames have given player permission to speak to teams before free agency opens

According to Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK Television and the Vancouver Athletic, the Flames have given forward Milan Lucic permission to speak with teams ahead of free agency opening July 1st; Take a look.

The front runners for the big forward's services appear to be the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers.

At 35, many thought Lucic might hang up the skates, but if the world championships were any indication, he still has some gas in the tank. Lucic skated in 77 games with the Flames last season scoring 7 goals and adding 12 assists for a total of 19 points. Mostly used in a 4th line role, he proved that along with hitting anything and everything, he can still find a way to be an offensive contributor.

It wouldn't surprise me of someone takes a chance on him, especially given the fact that he'll like sign a 1.5 million or below.
I would take him for around a mill.

You can add Toffoli as well:

One or more of these guys would be an excellent addition for us. All very solid players.

Yeah I saw that a bit ago. With our GM now... if they can't sign Nylander or get a ballpark you'd think maybe you could get a base deal of maybe...

Nylander and probably have to give up Lilly... for Hanifin and lindholm or maybe switch it up with some picks and it's Nylander + for hanifin and toffoli.

Just guessing... I don't put out many trade proposals. I just wait for them to happen usually because even GMs evaluations are so different sometimes.

I think there is some base for a deal between the 2 teams.

I'm still a believer that one of the core 4 should go to shift money to round out the bottom 6 and a different mix to the D.

Yes Leafs still need to score in the playoffs but they need a 4 line team to score more ... It gets tough to score in the playoffs.

If guys like Lindholm, Toffoli and Hannifin said trade me bc I won’t resign, going to be hard to retool on the fly.

How many years until the following teams pass us in the standings:

Buffalo - 1 or 2
Ottawa - 1 or fewer
Montreal - 3 - 4 as of now

We have real threats in Buffalo and Ottawa imo. I could see them both being very close or even better than us this coming season. We need to hope we can leapfrog Tampa, Florida and Boston if we want to lock in a non-WC playoff spot imo.

Gotta enjoy these winning seasons while we can because our rivals are flush with affordable talent and picks.

You forgot Detroit. Most teams (Det, NJ, Canes, Sabres, Sens) are paying their top players significantly less than ours and are outperforming their contracts (Tage, Hughes, Svetchnikov, Larkin, Stutzle, Seider, Aho) while we are overpaying and as a whole, our stars are underperforming (mostly on JT). All those teams have also been picking higher in the draft while we pick low if we even have a 1st. Good thing is the Bruins and Tampa should slip a bit. Hopefully Florida falls back to earth.

We've already leapfrogged those teams and they have worse pools and less picks than us.

Boston may be able to magically extend their window, but they have one of, if not the worst, prospect pools in the league and also have less picks than us.

Now come playoff time it is another story, but at this point, I do not think QoC is our problem. We can easily beat, but also lose, to anyone in a 7 games series... And we've done more of the latter than the former right now. Improving that is going to come down to some key positions that it looks like Treliving is not going to touch anyways (the core, goaltending, a little bit of defense but I don't see the kind of overhaul that people expect).

Most likely, short of Treliving sucking at his job, we will be at least in the same spot as we've always been. It's just instead of competing with Tampa/Boston/etc. as a younger team, we are competing with Buffalo/Ottawa as an older team.

I will also say this: I am more worried about Buffalo right now than Ottawa, because BUF will be able to add another solid prospect at 13 and have a few good ones in the pipeline to pair with what they have in the NHL already. OTT has some good young players in the NHL right now, but other than those guys developing, I am not seeing much coming up through the pipeline that is any better than what the Leafs have. And while I imagine they get some picks back for trading DeBrincat, they don't have a ton of picks either.

And really it is the same with DET/MTL. Both have/had some impressive prospects only for most of them to flop and not look great. And have had some lofty picks not meet expectations (at least at this point).

While I don't disagree that the Leafs need to be opportunistic about Tampa/Boston faltering, nothing is set in stone about those other teams surpassing the Leafs anytime soon.

Good hire for flames. Was kind of hoping we got him.

I'm guessing who they get as an assistant or for the AHL will most likely be a replacement for Keefe if things get sour.

Travis Green could have stayed in his home country of Canada. He could have joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, led by former Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews and new general manager Brad Treliving. He could have even stayed in Western Canada to join a rebuilding Calgary Flames’ club desperate for hope in light of a looming mass exodus.

Instead, Green chose New Jersey – where he wants to guide the Devils to their first Stanley Cup crown in over 20 years.

Green, who was head coach of the Vancouver Canucks from 2017 to 2021, was officially named Devils associate coach Thursday afternoon, replacing Andrew Brunette, who was named the fourth coach in Nashville Predators history earlier this month. The former NHL center boasts nine years of NHL and AHL head coaching experience and lifted Vancouver to their most recent Stanley Cup playoff appearance in 2019-20.

When mulling his options this offseason, Green said the Devils, who won a franchise-best 52 games last season, were the clear choice.

“New Jersey really checked all the boxes,” Green said in a press conference Thursday. “A young, exciting team that’s been developed through the draft and you’ve seen them slowly mature. Last year they had a great season and they really have, in my opinion, a chance to win and win long-term."

“Then, the people that you get to work with. Lindy (Ruff) and Tom (Fitzgerald), being able to work with them but also the rest of the coaching staff… You’re always looking to learn and get better as a coach and you know New Jersey really checked everything that I was looking for when it came to joining a team.”

Green, 52, says running New Jersey’s power play unit is “part of” his role. The Devils finished with the 13th best power play in the NHL last season (21.88%) and the fourth worst in the playoffs (16.67%). In his four seasons with Vancouver, Green’s man-advantage units finished ninth (2017-18), 22nd (2018-19), fourth (2019-20) and 25th (2020-21).

After a 133-147-34 total record, Green was fired by Vancouver in December 2021 but says he feels “recharged” since then. In his time away from hockey, Green visited teams in Europe to “see different sides of coaching” and watched the NHL in ways he “hadn’t before” this past season.
