The Devils officially hired Travis Green as associate coach Thursday.

Travis Green could have stayed in his home country of Canada. He could have joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, led by former Hart Trophy winner Auston Matthews and new general manager Brad Treliving. He could have even stayed in Western Canada to join a rebuilding Calgary Flames’ club desperate for hope in light of a looming mass exodus.
Instead, Green chose New Jersey – where he wants to guide the Devils to their first Stanley Cup crown in over 20 years.
Green, who was head coach of the Vancouver Canucks from 2017 to 2021, was officially named Devils associate coach Thursday afternoon, replacing Andrew Brunette, who was named the fourth coach in Nashville Predators history earlier this month. The former NHL center boasts nine years of NHL and AHL head coaching experience and lifted Vancouver to their most recent Stanley Cup playoff appearance in 2019-20.
When mulling his options this offseason, Green said the Devils, who won a franchise-best 52 games last season, were the clear choice.
“New Jersey really checked all the boxes,” Green said in a press conference Thursday. “A young, exciting team that’s been developed through the draft and you’ve seen them slowly mature. Last year they had a great season and they really have, in my opinion, a chance to win and win long-term."
“Then, the people that you get to work with. Lindy (Ruff) and Tom (Fitzgerald), being able to work with them but also the rest of the coaching staff… You’re always looking to learn and get better as a coach and you know New Jersey really checked everything that I was looking for when it came to joining a team.”
Green, 52, says running New Jersey’s power play unit is “part of” his role. The Devils finished with the 13th best power play in the NHL last season (21.88%) and the fourth worst in the playoffs (16.67%). In his four seasons with Vancouver, Green’s man-advantage units finished ninth (2017-18), 22nd (2018-19), fourth (2019-20) and 25th (2020-21).
After a 133-147-34 total record, Green was fired by Vancouver in December 2021 but says he feels “recharged” since then. In his time away from hockey, Green visited teams in Europe to “see different sides of coaching” and watched the NHL in ways he “hadn’t before” this past season.
