To save some real money probably lol.

Save money and then take on a bigger contract for a prospect or a 1st rounder
They still have to meet the cap floor don't they?

Or it may actually be they start operating like a NHL franchise and go for it. Who knows
I'll happily hand over Robertsson if they take Tavares

They might give you a pick for Tavares July 2nd 2024 at which point his base salary will be 910K.

I can see the Leafs asking JT to agree to go to Zona for the 2024 season and then resigning with the Leafs July 1, 2025. They could also bring him back at the TDL.

It actually makes some sense, given his NMC.

What a joke of a franchise. IDGAF if all 5 of their fans come here and rip on the Leafs for not winning in the playoffs no franchise in pro sports functions like this or has a stadium that is 25% of the size of the standard capacity.

I don't know how Bettman continues to rationalize having them stay there. The only way I can ever see them start to think about it is having a top draft pick (#6 this year?) pull an Eric Lindros to Quebec. And more then that publicly be like this franchise is a joke and I'm not playing there period. The bad press will start to worry him.

So is Acciari now looking for $2.5-3 million per?
Hopefully a bit less.
Buffalo can slightly overpay for Girgensons, they have a ton of cap room, he is known as a great locker room guy that everyone loves there. His 'fancy stats' dont' show it but he is one of the best penalty killers in the league, and he can be a terror on the forecheck. However, when you are scoring as much (or as little) as he and Acciari do, $2.5m is a bit high.

Again, Buffalo has the cap room though, therefore a bit of an overpay for one year.

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, Connor Hellebuyck has set his price going into free agency next year, along with his preferred contract length; take a look, it might be a little less than you would think.

LeBrun says Hellebuyck is looking for max term with an AAV of around 9.5 million dollars a season. This seems to be around the going rate for Vezina Calibre goaltenders these days. The problem with this is, his current deal ends when he's 31 and if you sign him to a max extension worth that value, you'd have to watch out for a serious regression in the later part of the deal.

Hellebuyck went 35-25-2 with 4 shutouts a .920 save percentage and a 2.49 goals against average across 64 games played with the Jets last year.

The 9.5 price tag seems to be a little high based on the fact that he's looking for a max contract. I'm sure a team is willing to pay that though, and who knows, the salary cap may go up next summer as well, but paying a 31 year old 9.5 until he's 39 is a tough pill to swallow.

Yes, that term is ridiculous...if he is asking to be paid until he's 39, he needs to keep the AAV at around $8 million. Can he even play up to the value of $9.5 million AAV the last 3 years of that term? Imagine that, paying a back-up $9.5 million AAV from age 36 to 39...you'd think there aren't any good young goalies several years from now.

Apparently utilizing the Bobrovsky contract as a template of sorts? (extra year of term with the lesser AAV for Hellebuyck based on having one less Vezina Trophy to his name).

This Calgary Flames have given player permission to speak to teams before free agency opens

According to Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK Television and the Vancouver Athletic, the Flames have given forward Milan Lucic permission to speak with teams ahead of free agency opening July 1st; Take a look.

The front runners for the big forward's services appear to be the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and the Edmonton Oilers.

At 35, many thought Lucic might hang up the skates, but if the world championships were any indication, he still has some gas in the tank. Lucic skated in 77 games with the Flames last season scoring 7 goals and adding 12 assists for a total of 19 points. Mostly used in a 4th line role, he proved that along with hitting anything and everything, he can still find a way to be an offensive contributor.

It wouldn't surprise me of someone takes a chance on him, especially given the fact that he'll like sign a 1.5 million or below.

Can the cap circumvention issue work both ways?

Taking on that much dead cap to make the floor isn’t right

They’ve already played rosters that are basically the opposite of Tampa/Vegas going over the cap with playoff LTIR. The year they had Datsyuk and Pronger + a bunch of other buyouts and retentions, their most expensive possible game day combination of 23 players that are eligible to play in the NHL was below the cap floor. I’m pretty sure if they let them keep a lottery pick for forfeiting the season, they’d do it to pocket the arena operation costs.
