Brock University alumni Kyle Dubas was awarded an honourary doctorate on Wednesday just over 15 years since he graduated.

Dubas spent 9 years with the Toronto Maple Leafs, eventually becoming General Manager. The Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs last month in a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Flordia Panthers. Remarks Dubas made at the press conference after the team’s loss raised eyebrows, as some questioned his commitment to the team. He and the Leafs parted ways just a few weeks later. He is now the President of Operations for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“…I’ll miss the people, the passion of the fans, and the fan base, and I thought we built a great organization there and we fell short of what we wanted to accomplish and so they made the decision to move on and our family has moved on as well, but I will always look back fondly on the opportunity that I was given,” Dubas said.

His career started after he graduated from Brock back in 2007 with a degree in Sports Management. He says he is humbled and honored to receive this doctorate, and that this university has made a huge impact on his life both professionally and personally.

“…Basically every key relationship and opportunity I’ve had in my life has come from Brock so Brock changed my life, to be able to come here today and receive this honorary degree is extraordinarily meaningful,” Dubas said.

I guess the Soo and Toronto were less fruitful experiences…

The Florida Panthers have announced a multitude of serious injuries since losing the Stanley Cup to Vegas. Hard to feel any sympathy for a team whose Plan A was to target and mug other players. Bennett concussing Knies, Ekblad’s head lock on Bunting. Tkachuk’s combination head, stick lock on Pietrangelo and punching antics. Bennett’s punch happy ways with Hague and Pietrangelo. Gudas’ cheap thug nonsense. Maurice’s gang sign nonsense.

I wonder how many would answer Wayne Gretzky.

I generation from now, I'm not certain that most US hockey fans will know or care who Wayne Gretzky is sadly...they'll follow their modern day star players, but not sure they'll care about who Gretzky is.

Old time hockey for sure, I doubt they’re looking for any sympathy, but I can’t imagine getting that close to your dream and not achieving it, for some they may never get closer to the Cup……..

"But the most important part of that championship foundation was the building blocks themselves. Foley had an edict for his management team: Find players who were "team effort, low ego, low maintenance."

McNabb would add another trait to that list: ferocity.

"We were a ferocious team. We were playing fast, and it was hard on teams to keep up with us. And the belief set in," McNabb said."

DNA.
You need skill without a doubt, but skill is just the beginning.
When conducting interviews for drafting, or signing UFA and making trades, you can’t just look at skill alone and say player A is more skilled than B so give me that.
You need key characteristics to go with that skill.

Campbell is 100% getting bought out imo. Very reasonable buyout structure.

Only to resign with the Leafs?

What a pay day. Play for 1 year and make 25 million dollars
If I were him, with his mental state, I say go play in Arizona

They dont' get enough fans to boo you

He only played 36 games. Dont think he finished more than 25 games. Nice payday.

No matter how much Treliving says it’s about 23 guys, it’s always about 4 here.
that presser was so revealing, Leafs got miles to go before they're a team let alone a contender imo.............

agreed, and having a coach that obviously cares so much would also be refreshing...........
It was just candid... took his time and spoke from his heart

Keefe and toronto is always looking like they cant wait to get it over with

So many things played into that.. emotion obviously.. experience cause he does have a ton of it, reflection and basically just honesty

yup, it gave the impression that the coach would go through anything for that team and vise versa the players for the coach. that there is team building at it's finest...........
