Are you assuming decline from the core of the team?

Bad decision on GM?
I don’t think there will be a decline from the core (maybe Tavares) in the next few years but I also doubt there is going to be an improvement in terms of production over their salary.

The key is if other teams can sign their top guys for 8/9 million while we pay 10/12/13.

That makes a huge difference in what you can put around and the quality you can have. Does that mean your D is primarily guys who are really 4,5,6, while the other team is made up of 2,3,4s?

People talk about Tampa and Vegas winning 10 million over the cap, well 10 million is a huge difference.

We don’t have the Marchessault, Karlsson, etc. exceeding cap hits. We go from highest paid surrounded by lower dollar UFAs. Add to that the core is not playoff friendly and it’s almost like you probably don’t win 1st or 2bd rounds often.

I realize what you're saying, but ... 28th. ranked on Central Scouting.
Leafs haven't had a great pick (as in top 15) for years.
Trading back from 28th. to get a couple picks between 40 and 60 probably lands about the same talent and potential.

Suggesting Minten is a top selection of course is a huge stretch.

Among North American only however but yeah I agree

I think I have said this before but I wouldn't have issues if we actually drafted BPA with our massive resource advantage. We unfortunately seemed to draft on undervalued resources that might be overlooked which most often time seemed to be age or stature based

Ryjo at 50% to the Avs for Galchenyuk.

Interesting first trade for Trotz...

This is such a weird trade lol

I'm starting to believe there's something up with Durzi. He has looked good when I've seen him. Seems like a good value to get in trade for a 2nd round pick.

He's somewhat similar to Sandin in that the offensive ability is clearly there but the real question is his ability to actually play defense.

Rebuilding teams or teams that have a ceiling of playoff bubble team usually have more use for these types than teams that are true championship contenders.

Why do you think that?

I could only guess it might have something to do with never being a winner?
I think Marleau was tougher than some accept, but wasn't the go through the wall to win type.

Too bad they couldn't have landed a Messier type of player, but then again perhaps that type of player's time has been left in the ummm... a different era.

Nah Sandin had a lot more defensive ability and upside than Durzi.

The entire issue with Sandin were the injuries and what that could do to his skating.

LA is making room for Clarke apparently next year .. a bit of an interesting trade because outside of Clake they have only 4 D locked up. But they do have Doughty and Roy on the right side.

I'm guessing they think that 2nd round pick has more value when shopping around for roster upgrades rather than trying to use Durzi in a package. And if they couldn't find a deal, Durzi's value could decrease with reduced playing time/role with Clarke coming into the fold.

They traded away Walker, Grans, and Durzi from their RD pool and they still have Doughty, Roy, Clarke, and Spence.

They just need to sign a LD for their bottom pairing and even there they are not doing too bad.

Even if Sandin does have more upside defensively, they still both fall into a group of defensemen that currently aren't very good at defending and most of their value comes from the ability to create offense and run a PP.

Why do you think that?
- A career loser who was a foundational member of a leadership core that blew 2 3-0 leads in 4 years (2011 vs DET, 2014 vs LA). They ended up winning game 7 against Detroit, but only 9 teams have ever forced game 7 after down 3-0 in the NHL. How the heck did SJ allow it to happen twice in 4 years. Surprise surprise, our core knows something about blowing leads as well and struggles to close series out
- He chases money and has his entire career. As a person I can't blame him for that as it's his right, but building a team he is not who I want mentoring the core. He never signed for more than 4 years and continuously went to the well for more. Hell, the reason we got Marleau in the first place is we offered an extra year at 6 million and that caused him to uproot his entire family and life (A reddit comment expanded on this very well, forget who it was tho). Surprise surprise, our core is now known for being the group who fights for every $$ and never wants max term

A lot of the flaws people find in this core are the same things we saw in the likes of Thornton and Marleau

Worth noting Marleau’s stint as Captain which he handed to Thornton amidst their playoff failure

It’ll be a nice pickup for LA if they can acquire PLD with an extension, especially with Kopitar getting up there in age.

Well, at least we got a 1st (albeit one that is one that is not significantly higher than the 2nd Durzi got) and Gustafsson for a run.
