Even if Sandin does have more upside defensively, they still both fall into a group of defensemen that currently aren't very good at defending and most of their value comes from the ability to create offense and run a PP.

I think teams saw how big and tough the VGK defense is and realized small d men, unless they are great, are less valuable.

Big blueline corps have never gone out of style in the long history of hockey. There's always room for offensively brilliant defensemen of all shapes and sizes, but you can't have a blueline full of guys that are skilled, small and slow like Sandin and expect great results.

- A career loser who was a foundational member of a leadership core that blew 2 3-0 leads in 4 years (2011 vs DET, 2014 vs LA). They ended up winning game 7 against Detroit, but only 9 teams have ever forced game 7 after down 3-0 in the NHL. How the heck did SJ allow it to happen twice in 4 years. Surprise surprise, our core knows something about blowing leads as well and struggles to close series out
- He chases money and has his entire career. As a person I can't blame him for that as it's his right, but building a team he is not who I want mentoring the core. He never signed for more than 4 years and continuously went to the well for more. Hell, the reason we got Marleau in the first place is we offered an extra year at 6 million and that caused him to uproot his entire family and life (A reddit comment expanded on this very well, forget who it was tho). Surprise surprise, our core is now known for being the group who fights for every $$ and never wants max term

A lot of the flaws people find in this core are the same things we saw in the likes of Thornton and Marleau
I’ve never felt in a team dynamic that one player could have that much influence.

Well, at least we got a 1st (albeit one that is one that is not significantly higher than the 2nd Durzi got) and Gustafsson for a run.

Is there some alternative solution where we can trade the first to Arizona for Durzi?

I think if you are a small Dman, you either be lightning fast or great zone breakout skills or you are very very physical. You have to have at least one of those or you just won’t be useful.
Sandin is great in everything except for his speed and size and those two hurt as a player.

I think they're going to run back about 11 players, then mix in a couple/few Marlies, and supplement.

Only have 15 on the roster, and that includes Timmins and Knies.

Yeah, there are going to be changes.

marner for Draisaitl isn't a move they're going to make though.

Pittsburgh hired a guy to manage the salary cap it looks like. So a good sign for us to keep Pridham
Perhaps he's happy where he is?

Where is brandon pridham from?

Stouffville, Ontario

Who is Brandon Pridham? Born in Stouffville, Ontario, Pridham played hockey as a child but did not play competitively through his teens or adulthood after hurting his shoulder in major junior. He went on to study at York University then George Brown College before joining the NHL in a licensing and marketing role.

I would assume he's happy maybe the title is interesting to him, I'm gonna guess he's well paid as well

Keep in mind, it is completely normal for there to be 25% roster change from game one, to the playoffs. What the roster looks like in October, is not as important as what it is at the end of the season. The turnover was even bigger last year.

Perhaps Leafs should trade their 1st round pick for a 1st. and 3rd. in 2024?

That would give them some currency for Trade deadline Day.

It still boggles my mind that this could happen and they still set the All Time Regular season record 7 years later. Even if they had to trade those 3 for picks and prospects because of the cap it'd be insane.

Lots of good players in that draft behind 18 even. JEE, Konecny, Boeser, Aho, and then the 3 you have listed. If they took even 1-2 of those guys they'd be even more deadly today lol

I'm not cherry picking guys taken in the 20's and 2nd round. Aho going 13th is just not reasonable. It's the direct 3 picks after Boston made those trades to get 13,14,15.

Though Boston did take all 3 of those guys well before there were expected to, especially Senyshyn

Yep that draft was a legendary failure but in fairness the Bruins did somehow draft Pastrnak at #25 overall the year before.

Kyle Dubas disappoints Penguins fans with offseason plan

Things really are about to get rough in Pittsburgh.

If Penguins fans were hoping that he would be an active player in free agency by bringing in top names to the Steel City, they may have to temper those kinds of expectations. Based on comments that Dubas made today, the Penguins will not be active in the free agency market for anything other than bottom-six players.

Penguins fans, it's certainly been one prolific run of the franchise that two decades ago appeared on the verge of relocation. But as they say, all good things must come to an end. And with the franchise trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang all nearing the end of their careers, things are not about to get any easier for the Penguins.

This is your off season Pittsburgh, Justin Holl, Alex Kerfoot & Zach Aston-Reese.

I understand Pens' fans frustrations as they'd like to take one or two last kick(s) at the can with the iconic franchise trio before heading into a much needed rebuild.

Thing is, Dubas did a good job with filling out the bottom six here with a bunch of retreads looking to bounce back on a one-year deal, which in a few instances in particular worked (Parenteau, Ennis, Spezza). However, he never was able to solidify those positions with draftees on entry level contracts. Someone should have easily been able to have done and given what Simmonds did, for instance.
