Around the League--Dog Days of Summer

There's no real good time to do these international tournaments. During the season can obviously mess things up, and any point during the summer makes the off season short.

Only thing wrong with this World Cup is the joke teams. Just replace them with real national teams for the next cycle.

Other than that, this tournament could alternate with the Olympics, provided NHL continues to allow participation at the Winter Games.
So the next 6 years would look something like this:
2016 WC
2018 OG
2020 WC
2022 OG
And so on...

plus it's not like these players are going to be going all out. I doubt there will be a lot of hitting and the games will be used more like a training camp IMO

sounds like switzerland will likely replace one of the teams. I am guessing it will be team north america.

My money's on Switzerland and Latvia.

Or just have a qualifying cycle just like they do for the Olympic tournament.

Mine too.

I think that this thing could work if they keep it sort of an EU tourney and limit the players availability to keep them from competing with the NHL. It can be done. If not then why bother?

ummmm Slovakia? Despite not being as strong as their heyday they are still solidly a top 8 nation (Swizterland is pushing them now).

# of NHLers by country - # of Skaters - # of Goalie
Russia - 28 - 7
Sweden - 67 - 10
Finland - 26 - 9
Czech - 34 - 4
Slovakia - 12 - 1
Swizterland - 11 - 2
Austria - 3 - 0
Belarus - 2 - 0
Denmark - 7 - 1
France - 3 - 0
Germany - 7 - 2
Latvia - 2 - 0
Norway - 1 - 0
Slovenia - 1 - 0

IMO, no. All the more reason for a qualification cycle for the WC, so we can see if Slovakia can still hold its own.

Really, my only issue with the WC is the joke teams.
Plus the tournament opens up the potential for even more bragging rights for Canada if they win. Of course I'd be bothered by this because I'm American and it's been a long time since the US national team gave me something to cheer about.

Last 3 best on best (Olympics) they've finished 11th, 4th, and 5th. That's doing pretty alright. By comparison Latvia has finished 8th, 12th, 12th. Swizterland has been 9th, 8th, 6th.

I agree qualifications are best. Which Olympics have. And by the way there was 8 auto-qualifiers (based on results) for the 2018 Olympics. Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech, Slovakia, and Swizterland.

And I agree these are dumb stupid joke teams. This tourney is meh to me due to that and other factors.

Tim Murray is an idiot GM. Buffalo is going to a gong show in three years.

I like the idea of mirroring the WJC. Have the top 10 and then a qualifying tournament where the top team (or top two teams) get moved into the top tournament while the bottom two in the WJC get demoted. Would give more games, so more revenue, and make it easier to decide who is in and out each time they do this event.

I agree; already spending too much money just because it's there and it's going to bite him in the ass not only on the prospects whose development is foreseen but on those who emerge by surprise.

That being said, Franson contract is good, even though I personally think he's a garbage player who benefited from the TO media talking him up all the time.

Only one team gets relegated in WJC. There's a whole system set up behind that as well (Div 1A, 1B, 2A, etc) where teams are getting moved around. IIHf has that set up. It'd be a big setup for NHL to do.

In WC there's two teams that change from WC and Div 1A. WJC only does one 1.

Kane's grand jury date has been rescheduled

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sport...ne-grand-jury-rescheduled-20150910-story.html

Kane's attorney, Paul Cambria, said Thursday that he did not know why prosecutors canceled the grand jury presentation but that the move did not come at his request. He also said he was told the proceedings would resume soon, though he would not discuss any other aspect of the case.

"We were informed that it (the grand jury) was rescheduled," Cambria said

Yeah, two was the old way. I forgot they dropped it to one team.

I know they have the several stages for IIHF, I'm not suggesting the NHL goes that indepth. There's obviously debate over the involvement of other countries, seems like it might be a good idea to have a second tier where the 'others' can battle for a chance to join the big boys. Maybe make the criteria that your country is eligible for inclusion if you have at least one NHL player and the country in questions hockey federation agrees to participate by the rules.

Now to see if Uncle Gary has the guts to troll out good old section 18-A.5.
I think we all know this section all too well after Voynov.

18-A.5
Criminal Investigation
.
A Player subject to Commissioner Discipline for Off-Ice
Conduct may seek a reasonable delay in such proceedings in order to retain and seek the advice
of counsel in the event his conduct may also be subject to a criminal investigation by any
governmental authority, or in the event of an ongoing civil proceeding where the Player has been
named as a defendant. The League may suspend the Player pending the League's formal review
and disposition of the matter where the failure to suspend the Player during this period would
create a substantial risk of material harm to the legitimate interests and/or reputation of the
League

I'd keep the WC to just the elite tier. Would motivate the smaller nations into making qualification rounds (if it is implemented) very, very interesting.

No **** Walsh, welcome to 2015. How grumpy are you gonna be when players are skating with those tracking chips in their jerseys?
