Around the League--Dog Days of Summer

Very reasonable deal. DOesn't have a lot of mileage. But lets see if he can make it through a full season playing big minutes again. Guy is fantastic though and that's a bargain if he even makes it 2/3 thru that contract playing at this level which he should.

It's a good deal cap wise for now, but he hasn't made it through a full season playing normal minutes in 4 years, let alone big minutes. He'll be 33 when the contract starts , not the best age for long term contract to kick in.

Decent deal if Gio maintains his play for at least the next four seasons. If he falls off after say season two of that deal, it's going to be a drag on Calgary. T.J. Brodie is the real deal, and will need a raise soon.

Agreed, and that top 4 is solid. Brodie just turned 25, Hamilton just turned 22, they have a whole lotta of miles ahead. Even Russell is only 28...

Thank gatos for the cap. Like Edmonton, they'll have trouble keeping it together

Here is a link to a FAN 590 podcast with an appearance from Rich Hammond talking about the Kings off-season and what is to come with Richards, Voynov etc.

Only thing I don't understand is this, can they not buyout Richards next summer should they lose this case? That seems to be implied.

I guess that would be for an arbitrator to decide. They were prepared to buy him out before the draft, possibly had a deal to move him when the boarder incident took place, then pulled everything off the table including the buyout. An arbitrator may either say he can still be bought out once this goes through [lose the case], or tell the Kings he has to say on the roster until next season [which would be messed up considering it was his lack of communication that got everything to this point].

I think the league, the NHLPA and the Kings would all prefer to see a buyout happen should the Kings lose the case.

If he is forced back on the Kings he will just be assigned to Ontario and likely be scratched. The CBA may tell the Kings they can't send him to the ECHL, but it can't force them to play Richards in the AHL. It would be a toxic situation that does no good for either the Kings or Richards.

The Kings get cap relief from the worst contract in the NHL and Richards gets the money he rightfully is entitled to and a chance to salvage his career.

They're no different than most NHL teams in juggling the numbers when you have a few young talented players coming off of rookie deals.
Most GM's identify their needs and make the tough choices accordingly. Next summer will be tough but they get 9M in cap relief from Wideman and Engelland the following yr, unless they move one next summer. So they have to sweat out 2016-17
Goaltending - Ramo and Hiller both on expiring deals, one won't be back. my guess is they keep Ramo.
Defense- Gio, Hamliton and Brodie all signed thru at least 2020. Russell will get done and that nails down their top 4, Wideman and Engelland are both up in 2017, that's 9M off the books. I'm sure they'd love to move one next summer but that won't be easy.
Center- Monahan (inked next summer ) and Bennett (eventually, 2 yrs left on his rookie deal) and Backland.(2018) and Grantlund
Top forwards - Frolik is signed long term and Hudler , up next yr and that will be a decision for them, given his age. Could be they feel Frolik signed Long term replaces him. johnny G, new deal coming.
Next summer - they need enough to get a goalie, Johnny G, Monahan, Grantlund and Russell signed.
Top 4 D, goalie and their core forwards will be locked down.
A tough challenge as they have 24.9 in Cap space for 16/17 with 12 players signed but maybe they'll find a taker for Wideman or Engelland

Except they have two D-men who could be #1's in hamilton and brodie signed to long term deals at cap friendly numbers.
They are setting things in motion to be good defensively for years to come.

not that we hear it much but the sharks are ditching their goal horn song. Always thought the Sharks version of rock and roll part 2 was pretty lame.

Another significant move in the ongoing rebuild.

That Doug Wilson: pure genius.

Russell is a UFA to be, as is Hudler, and if Gaudreau and Monahan repeat their seasons, it will be hard to justify a bridge deal. Plus, they don't have a goaltender on the books for next year. Could become a top heavy roster very quickly.

Gaudreau, Monahan, and Bennet will tkae up their big cap hits on forward, but two of them will not need new deals till Englland, bollig, Wideman, and Raymond are all of the books. Russell will not cost a lot, if he leaves I doubt they will be too worried but there is room to re-sign him as Monahan and Johhny-g's deal will not be in effect till all those players I listed above are gone.
hudler is interesting, if he wants $$ I doubt he gets a long term deal. he maybe their one casualty.
In net, there will be plenty of goalies available next offseason (there always seems to be). In order to be a true contender I think Calgary will need to get someone better between the pipes, but when that time comes they will have the cap space for it.

Penguins gave tom Sesito a PTO...guess now that Downie (Yotes) isn't there was that 'role' open. 432 Penalty minutes in 137 career games...but had a bitter parting with the Canucks, who put him on waviers but he elected not to play in the AHL and stated the Canucks didnt' give him a fair chance .

I will be back. And I have stuff to prove against them,” he said. “I didn’t get a chance to prove myself. I definitely deserved better. I got put in a bad situation.

Until this signing, the Pens had made some good moves this summer, not sure why they'd offer him a PTO.

I think the Pens agreed to this PTO just to shut up the guy that keeps complaining about the lack of toughness on the roster in every comment section.

Uh, no, Tommy-boy, you won't be back, not this year, and probably never again. If you want to get back at Vancouver, you are probably going to have to start a riot there, or something.
