SI Article on how Alex Ovechkin's statement that he and others 'will' play in the 2018 Olympics, whether the NHL participates or not, is potentially undermining the NHL's position. They have not committed for various reasons, including owners that are dead set against it. It's why are instituting the World Championship in Sep 2016 pre season, not in the middle. But there are other issues

But the article points out that OVie's adamant stance might undermine that if the IIHF and Korea feel that players will come anyway.

Can he (and others) be penalized if the NHL isn't participating and they go anyway? Other than they'd have to put up $$M in for insurance. Couldn't he get suspended?

I imagine they would have to forfeit the money for the games missed, because if the NHL isn't allowing players to go, they won't stop the season for 3 weeks.

By the way, CNBC reporting this morning that Mexico is hedging it's oil at around $45 a barrel, which means they think the price isn't going up anytime soon. There are so many Saudi tankers at U.S. refining ports that they can't take them all at this time. In other words the refiners are working at full capacity and can't accept all of the oil that is flooding the market.

Raw material prices like aluminum and silver are falling. Raw materials is another major contributor to the Canadian economy. The Canadian dollar will continue to drop. With 30% of league revenue coming from Canadian teams, the cap isn't going to grow much in the next year or two at least.

We will see $70/barrel oil again someday. The question is when. If you know let me know so I can buy/sell some futures contracts.

This seems lower than what I have previously seen. Where did you get this number?

You're right. If their estimate of 37% is correct, this only makes the problem worse in terms of salary cap growth.

That decline in the value of the loonie stalled the increase of the NHL salary cap for 2009-10, rising by only $100K US from $56.7 million to $56.8 million. That’s because the then-six Canadian NHL teams accounted for 33 percent of NHL revenue. With seven Canadian teams, it’s believed they could account for as much as 37 percent. With just seven teams accounting for over one-third of the revenue in the 30-team NHL, it has a significant effect upon league revenue and its salary cap.

For sure it's an issue.
I wonder when comparing 2009-2010 the difference between what winnipeg brings in for revenues at 70% (assuming a CDN dollar worth $0.70 just used for the sake of it) vs what Revenues Atlanta brought in at 100%.
As long as winpieg bring ins more than Atlanta did it would have helped a bit.
Doesn't matter for this next year though as Winnipeg has been there for a few years.

Quickest way to make the cap rise is for noon revenue producing franchises to start producing.

Agree with most of your post - $70 isn't coming soon barring a major geopolitical event and I'm also bearish on the Loonie.

While it's true that there is a lot of oil floating around (people use tankers as storage while they play the futures market), it's unlikely they are Saudi tankers.

The US imports ~9.5 million barrels of crude per day. Saudi accounts for about 1.2 million of those imports (~13% of imports) as of May 2015. (EIA)

If anyone ever gets curious, there is a feature on the EIA website that shows exactly how much crude the US imports and which countries it comes from.

Leafs Forward Komarov (just inked to a 4 yr deal) fined 35,000 Euros (51K) for speeding and fraud (2 counts each ) in Finland.

Because he was between teams, the 28-year-old told police he had no income - fines in Finland can be based upon income. However, the court ruled Komarov needed to report his earnings over a longer period, including his KHL earnings and his upcoming contract with the Maple Leafs, and assessed him with the heavy fine. He could have faced up to six months of jail time.

He outta get another fine for being stupid, no income???

I'm a jersey geek, so the first thing I noticed was that Hossa's wearing a replica without the Cup patch. Did he forget to pack/keep a Finals jersey?

Well..technically if you have no job and aren't cashing in stocks or something you don't actually have an income, even if you might have a bunch of money in a vault.

Income is money coming from another source. The court is smacking him with the fee because while he is technically between jobs, he has actually worked relatively recently and will be employed later in the year.

So he was right in a kind of smartassy way, but wrong in a government doesn't like smartasses way.

I think the Keeper of the Cup wanted this photo and it was thought of last second. Maybe Hossa didn't have one with him and they got one for him among the supplies they keep.
