If they’re expecting kreider to be a playmaker that’s the fans or coaching staff’s problem. Not his game at all. I haven’t watched them super close this year but i imagine the issue is pretty simply that shesterkin has been only ok instead of amazing
It’s partly that and their core guys seem to be off with their chemistry. Maybe that’s Zibs having a rough year, maybe they’re just off. That to me is what made that team great, their best players have great chemistry with each other and they were clutch. Neither is happening this year and like you’re saying the goaltending isn’t bailing them out. Tro has been playing well when I watched, at times he seems like the 1C. Panarin hasn’t seemed as dominant this year, not consistently anyways. He’s getting his points though so maybe I’m off there.

I remember looking at the schedule right when the news about guys being available came out and thinking it was ripe for them to put together a stretch of like 5-1 or 6-1, whatever it was. And they didn't really come close to doing that. Whatever has caused the disarray, I hope it continues.

There is discussion on the board re: Shakir Mukhamadullin's play and I went back to look at the specifics of the Meier deal.

Key assets for Sharks were a first (Quentin Musty still in Juniors), a late 2nd round in 2024, Mukhamadullin and Fabian Zetterlund. Mukhamadullin is beginning to age out and is still in the AHL.

Meier has 9G 11A this year on a $8.8M cap hit but interestingly Zetterlund is exactly productive (age 25) this year on a $1.45M contract.

I forgot Canes offer but also looking back did Canes dodge a bullet here?

Would Devils still make that deal today?

Part of it is the system teams play. I think Meier would have been ideal in the Canes system and a player Rod would love, but we'll never know.

I feel like Meier could have been a more talented Noesen for us. Someone who could move up and down the lines and play any role we asked. But considering Noesen's finding much more success in Jersey's system than he was here, who knows how that would have worked out for us?

I think Meier would be OK here, but it may not be the best use of $8.8M. Granted, we could say the same about Svechnikov's salary for much of the year. In any event we need another top 6 scorer, but to afford Meier's $8.8M this year would mean probably seeing Morrow instead of Walker and probably a 2 year Jarvis bridge.

I remember there were a handful of articles at the time that specifically mentioned how offense for the forwards was funneled through Meier a lot at the end of his time in San Jose and that he'd be unlikely to be as effective anywhere else. That's mostly proven true but he's still a pretty good player. There's that old saying that there are guys that get you to the playoffs and guys that get you through the playoffs. I could still see him being the latter.

He's also been getting a fair amount of his ice time lately with Meier, Hughes, and/or Hischier...so he can just park out front and bang in a rebound. For us he was almost exclusively used on the 4th line, so an uptick in production is expected

to your point, 3:37 more (29% higher). Still, definitely a good value pick for Devils (although Canes +/- result was much better):

It won't happen but climate wise Jacksonville might work for an outdoor game but it would have to be like the first week in January, and that stadium has the Gator bowl/NFL.

ESPN view of trade board. Some interesting names beyond the usual suspects:

As previously discussed, if Marchand really is that intrigued with playing alongside Jarvis, if he's truly available for a trade, we should be all over it like stink on shit. At the very least, he might be one of the few players who could come in and probably not get called for everything he does, just because he has such a reputation for getting away with it, and might help spread that rep across the team while teaching us how to play over the line like that to win in the playoffs.

Keep scrolling, it gets better
