Atlanta has no culture... oh boy...if you're any sort of music fan, Atlanta's one of the most influential spots in the country... maybe THE most influential city in modern hip-hop today. Future, 21 Savage, Young Thug, Migos, Gucci Mane, Outkast, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, JID, Lil Yachty, and numerous others... ALL from Atlanta.

So not “any sort” of music. It’s a hotspot if you’re into hip-hop of the past 20 years. Which yes, granted, it is indeed a cultural point in its favor. But Atlanta is not what you’d call a musical city. It’s arguably behind Athens for overall music scenes in the state of Georgia. There are cities half its size with more of an every-day music culture (low hanging examples would be Nashville and New Orleans and Austin).

I don’t have a feeling about Atlanta one way or another, as I’ve only been there a couple times, but doesn’t your last line apply to pretty much every mid size and large size city in the US, including Raleigh and Durham?

Of course, I was just pushing back on the notion of Atlanta as an exception. It has a considerably higher (+30%) violent crime rate than both Raleigh and Durham for example.

My guess is it has to do with a woman.

Nah, fortunately I’ve never been romantically tied to the place in that way. This is just accumulated experience of going there many times for a wide variety of reasons, and always ending up with a feeling of being glad to get out of there.

ATL does have a rock scene, sort of. Black Crowes, Collective Soul, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and the Georgia Satellites among others hail from there.

I don't care for them personally but the Zac Brown band is from there.

not really a selling point...

I was in Atlanta for a few days earlier this week. I'd rather they don't get an NHL team, not a cool place to travel to
Easy one....The Atlanta Traffic....done and done

I wish Atlanta sucked maybe then desirable neighborhoods/suburbs there would come down in price. Same with Raleigh.
Right now Glenwood South is becoming a dangerous part of the city.

We all know how this stuff works. The ones who are brave enough to move to a less-desirable part of town (but just in the outskirts of a good part) and revitalize the property can find good value. IOW, areas around Poole Road and Raleigh Blvd are the next frontier. I knew a couple of teachers that did this in Boylan Heights back when that neighborhood was a shithole. Now that area is incredibly valuable.

I guess I was wrong. I do often underestimate the fragility of today’s society. :)

I mean, it’s hard to say whether or not it’s the right decision without knowing the whole story, which we’re likely not going to get. But it sounds like whatever came out from the NHLPA investigation made it clear that Babcock couldn’t continue to be the coach. Which means it was definitely something more than sharing family photos.

Desirable neighborhoods are expensive precisely because they’re desirable. Atlanta and Raleigh aren’t expensive places to live; quite the opposite, they’re two of the cheapest places in the country relative to their population size. If they were even cheaper than they already are, it would be because they’d be in the Cleveland Zone of unattractiveness.

On that note, taking some of the subjectivity out of it, here are the top 34 (in order to be inclusive of Raleigh at #34) American population centers ranked by relative residential real estate cost in their core hub*:

High
Los Angeles
New York
San Francisco
Boston
San Diego

Medium-High
Miami
Washington
Austin
Seattle
Dallas

Medium
Houston
San Antonio
Denver
Sacramento
Portland
Chicago
Tampa
Minneapolis
Salt Lake City
Kansas City
Cincinnati
Raleigh
Orlando
Phoenix

Medium-Low
St Louis
Atlanta
Charlotte
Philadelphia
Indianapolis

Low
Las Vegas
Cleveland
Columbus
Pittsburgh
Detroit

Needless to say, real estate prices and municipal boundaries and statistical measurements are all complicated topics, so the underlying numbers can be nitpicked easily. But as a general demonstration of home values nationwide, those brackets suffice to show how things shake out. And those prices are, very broadly speaking, a measure of market pressure due to desirability.

* this tortured phrasing is necessary because AFAIK there is no ranking of real estate according to CSA or MSA, just core cities. So it’s the best we can do without undertaking a research project.

According to a source with knowledge of the NHLPA, it became clear that veteran players like Jenner were having a much different experience with Babcock than young players were having. What was reported by Bissonnette was "the tip of the iceberg," according to a source.

Yeah, OK, f*** that guy then. How do you get a second chance despite all odds, then f*** it up before you ever coach a game?

Because this is what Babcock does. To him, he's named coach, first thing he needs to do is to make sure he can control all the players. And the only way he knows how to do that is to manipulate and humiliate so that they know he's boss and don't resist. He genuinely thinks psychological manipulation and fear is what a coach is supposed to do. He didn't change that behavior not just because he doesn't see anything wrong with it, but because he sees it as a central part of how he's supposed to coach.

Cleveland has come a long way and its bad rep is due to a lot of shit that happened 30-40 years ago. It really is quite nice now and if it weren't for the weather it would be fantastic.
