Because this is what Babcock does. To him, he's named coach, first thing he needs to do is to make sure he can control all the players. And the only way he knows how to do that is to manipulate and humiliate so that they know he's boss and don't resist. He genuinely thinks psychological manipulation and fear is what a coach is supposed to do. He didn't change that behavior not just because he doesn't see anything wrong with it, but because he sees it as a central part of how he's supposed to coach.

What baffles me is that he does it to veteran players as well. He healthy scratched Mike Modano multiple times down the stretch of a Red Wings season, including the last game of the season, so Modano would end his career at 1499 games played instead of 1500.

When Detroit played in an outdoor game in Chicago, Chris Chelios’ hometown, he was going to scratch Chelios until the GM intervened. So Chelios was in the starting lineup…and then was benched for the rest of the game.

This all could have been avoided if Mike Babcock had just listened to the advice his kids gave him before his first day at a new job:

Yeah, OK, f*** that guy then. How do you get a second chance despite all odds, then f*** it up before you ever coach a game?
I mean…. I read the article and still have no idea what he did. Until I know those things this just feels like a new generation witch hunt against the old generation. I know Babcock has been a dick but so do the younger players. Before I believe the guy did something awful I’d like to hear what the younger players went through that was different than Jenner and his experience.

All this hate against Cbus old school management and JD who’s always been a pretty stand up guy….when we don’t really know. He quit because it was a distraction. People were clearly rooting against him from the get go and this charge was led by former players who dislike and were rooting against him.

I’m not saying it isn’t true, I’m just saying “where’s the beef?” with this story. If “trust me bro” doesn’t work around here why does a story like this work? Other than it’s low hanging fruit that people (especially younger generations) want to believe?

Paywalled.

Highlights?
Babs had Jenner come in and have a “get to know you better” session where he had Jenner show him his life/family and they put it on AirPlay to see it better. Babs showed his family and life too and Jenner said it was an awesome experience. Everything quieted down but based on unlisted reasons the PA dug deeper and all the article says is that the younger players were having different experiences than Jenner and that’s what led to everything.

So we don’t know if he actually did anything different or if a bunch of young guys who were already suspicious of Babs after hearing all the stories just took it the wrong way or just didn’t want to deal with him in the first place.

Desirable neighborhoods are expensive precisely because they’re desirable. Atlanta and Raleigh aren’t expensive places to live; quite the opposite, they’re two of the cheapest places in the country relative to their population size. If they were even cheaper than they already are, it would be because they’d be in the Cleveland Zone of unattractiveness.

On that note, taking some of the subjectivity out of it, here are the top 34 (in order to be inclusive of Raleigh at #34) American population centers ranked by relative residential real estate cost in their core hub*:

High
Los Angeles
New York
San Francisco
Boston
San Diego

Medium-High
Miami
Washington
Austin
Seattle
Dallas

Medium
Houston
San Antonio
Denver
Sacramento
Portland
Chicago
Tampa
Minneapolis
Salt Lake City
Kansas City
Cincinnati
Raleigh
Orlando
Phoenix

Medium-Low
St Louis
Atlanta
Charlotte
Philadelphia
Indianapolis

Low
Las Vegas
Cleveland
Columbus
Pittsburgh
Detroit

Needless to say, real estate prices and municipal boundaries and statistical measurements are all complicated topics, so the underlying numbers can be nitpicked easily. But as a general demonstration of home values nationwide, those brackets suffice to show how things shake out. And those prices are, very broadly speaking, a measure of market pressure due to desirability.

* this tortured phrasing is necessary because AFAIK there is no ranking of real estate according to CSA or MSA, just core cities. So it’s the best we can do without undertaking a research project.

Data
I ain’t reading all that. I’m happy for your Atlanta hate tho.

Psycho or a prick….pick one or both.

Can't wait for ESPN to give him an opportunity to rehab his image in the studio on the national broadcasts going forward
Which I'll never understand as he's one of the worst studio analysts I've ever experienced....but ESPN is gonna ESPN.
This is kinda like the apologies my wife gives me. “I’m sorry you got mad at what I said.”
I must be married to your wife's twin.

I must be married to your wife's twin.
As I got older I realized that every single woman I’ve ever been in a relationship with that made it to a level of where apologies were needed “apologized” like that. Which came with the realization that I’ve almost never heard a woman in a relationship with me actually apologize. To me anyways.

you're not wrong man, feels like a constant and it's definitely not just a generational thing

Gonna have to speak up for the ladies here as they are vastly outnumbered by us knuckleheads, but all of the women I have been in a relationship with have genuinely apologized to me.

*When caught red handed. With video. And witnesses. Sometimes.

Don't show this to my wife or I am in trouble. Again.

Except a lot of the old generation hate his guts as well. Commodore won't shut up about him and he's been out of the league for a decade now.

I think this was an attempt at a bonding exercise gone wrong. Like I said before, I imagine the intent was to get photos of the players' families (and apparently GM's family), put them up on the big screen and give a whole speech about how they're a family. Or about how family is what's important and hockey is just a game.

And that might have worked if he had given the players any heads up. But from what it sounds like, he'd call players into his office and asked to look through their phone. Which is a weird thing to ask for without any kind of prior notice. Because there may be other photos NOT of their family that they don't want to be sharing with their boss, let alone put on the big screen.

And yeah, that's an uncomfortable situation to put his players in and certainly not one he should be doing with the history that Babcock has.

Well that’s part of what I mentioned, this was driven by the history older generation to start. I don’t disagree, I just wanted more clarity on what he did different with the young guys vs the vets who thought it was great.

LOL, so great.

And while the details of his firing are amusing, I do feel kind of cheated though. I wish he'd at least have shown somebody his penis. Or threatened a reporter's life. You know, really earn it.

My first question was who is paying for these phones?

If the Blue Jackets pay for each player's phone, that is one thing. Although having just gone through an upgrade of my work phone, they were very specific about "things the company has access to" and "things the company does not have access to" (including pictures/camera.)

If NHL players are paying for their own mobile lines and he's asking for personal cell phones to see what the pictures are? Oh **** no. I am solid Gen X but I've read too much / had too many lectures on internet and data security to just hand my personal phone over to my new boss just because he asks for it.

Same goes for a laptop. Boss wants to see the work PC? Obvious, sure. You want to see my home PC? Hell no.

And I realize Babcock is right at the end of the baby boom generation, but given he coached Gen X for most of his career I would think he would know these things by now.

Hell, the company that I worked for wanted me to install Intelligent Hub and some other highly intrusive shit on my phone "so they could email me while I'm off the clock". My reaction was "are you buying me a phone and paying for the line? No? Then it's not happening, send me a text and I'll pull it up if I feel it's necessary". And that was after biting my tongue to avoid simply saying "f*** you".

…Does your company realize that emails aren’t in any way attached to phones and they could email you through the current phone you have, likely without having to install any additional apps?

Also, maybe it’s just because I’ve worked hourly jobs for most of my life, but “off the clock” should mean just that. If I’m getting phone calls, answering emails or having Zoom meetings outside of my scheduled hours, you better believe I’m getting paid for that time.

And why are you emailing me off the clock? If it’s so important you need me to see it right away I should probably be on the clock or you should have someone else covering that time of day.

Many companies don’t allow confidential information to be sent to personal email accounts for security reasons. These companies often make a blanket rule not allowing use of personal e-mail. Tech companies, some banks, and healthcare (sensitive personal information), defense and gov’t are orgs I’ve come across in the past that don’t allow use of personal email for business use. Imagine a tech company, for instance, having employees sharing information on gmail.
Also, maybe it’s just because I’ve worked hourly jobs for most of my life, but “off the clock” should mean just that. If I’m getting phone calls, answering emails or having Zoom meetings outside of my scheduled hours, you better believe I’m getting paid for that time.
It’s probably because you’ve had hourly jobs. Many salaried jobs have an expectation of off-hour work. They also often come with flexibility and comp hours to not make it overly burdensome.
