Oh don’t get me wrong Atlanta makes sense for the league I’m just referring to my preference. The league and bottom line don’t give a crap what I think. I do love the idea of Salt Lake though and I think that could make sense for the league too

No need to defend yourself, Atlanta is in fact the worst large city in the country. Other cities have their bullshit but also significant redeeming factors. Atlanta is like if you accidentally created multiple copies of Charlotte in the same location.

Yeah, but they have the Underground mall where I once saw and high-fived Lil Jon. I have never seen or high-fived Lil Jon in Charlotte.

Watching Calgary slowly sinking into a long term quagmire with Lindholm and Hanifin, and thinking about what this franchise would look like right now if we hadn’t moved on from that core.

I thought Hanifin was about to bud into a star when that trade was made. Someone here compared him to Jay Boumeester and I think that's damn accurate.

Apparently Lindholm wants $9mill. I actually wouldn't mind him back but I damn sure wouldn't give him $9mill.

Create multiple replicas of Charlotte, and that gives you multiple DaBabys which can be exchanged for a Lil Jon.

Not just $9M but 8 years of term starting at age 29.

Lindy’s a decent player, but that’s where you make a trade and never look back. But the Flames have painted themselves into this strange corner where rebuilding seems to literally not be an option they are willing to acknowledge. So they’re going to go into a season with this hanging over them, and Lindy’s a guy who signals discontent pretty transparently. They’re walking right into a Winnipeg-like scenario where everything is awful all the time.

Hanifin is such a vanilla player that he makes J-Bo look interesting. I suspect he remains an average player till he’s 40, so extending him at a reasonable number wouldn’t be the end of the world. But he’s already sending signals of wanting out, so once again they’re painted into a bad corner.

Way worse cities in this country than Atlanta. Spent a lot of time there.

The problem isn't Hanifin and Lindholm. The problem was trying to retool with the Tkachuk deal and signing Huberdeau and Weegar and Kadri to those deals.

Now "aging core" is their identity, and Lindholm and Hanifin aren't going to take short deals from a team willing to give out 8 years and big money for veterans.

Do you think a GM ever levels with a player who bitches about the team by saying "Listen, you little prick- your ridiculous salary demands are a big part of the reason we're in this mess" or words to that effect?

No, because the demands aren’t the problem. The problem is the GM or previous GM giving in to the ridiculous demands of those other little pricks sitting in the locker room with him.

Houston is worse.

I’ll give you same tier. Houston is too big to be as meh as it is.

Worse smaller cities, definitely. But for its size, Atlanta doesn’t bring all that much to the table. Among the 5M+ cities, it’s in the bottom tier with Houston and Detroit.

On the flip side Detroit gave us Kid Rock... so that should probably drop it down a notch.

Hold on, do you mean to tell me you don’t just have to give them whatever they ask for?

Not even in the top fifty in crime. Charlotte however…

So why is Atlanta on your shit list?

Because it has all the hassles of an LA or Miami without the beauty or culture to justify it. There’s a reason nobody takes vacations to Atlanta (or Houston or Charlotte). It’s an OK place to live for financial reasons, but it just kind of sucks as a city.

If it were half its size that would be fine, because it wouldn’t have all the b.s. that goes with being a huge metropolis (traffic, sprawl, soul-crushing poverty, etc). As a mid sized city it would just be another Charlotte or KC type of forgettable place. But at the scale of an Atlanta, you expect a little something extra. Some interesting neighborhoods, clear local identity, interesting cuisine, something. Atlanta just doesn’t have that, again making it feel like a mid-sized city that has just grown wildly out of control.

Also, while Atlanta’s overall crime rate isn’t egregiously high, it’s right behind D.C. in the top 20 for murder rate. Typically that statistic is an indicator of deep poverty and inequality, so while there may be areas which are totally safe there are also areas that are ridiculously unsafe.

Atlanta has no culture... oh boy...if you're any sort of music fan, Atlanta's one of the most influential spots in the country... maybe THE most influential city in modern hip-hop today. Future, 21 Savage, Young Thug, Migos, Gucci Mane, Outkast, Playboi Carti, Lil Baby, JID, Lil Yachty, and numerous others... ALL from Atlanta.

I don’t have a feeling about Atlanta one way or another, as I’ve only been there a couple times, but doesn’t your last line apply to pretty much every mid size and large size city in the US, including Raleigh and Durham?
