No one is looking the other way. Dude needs to produce.
On a very related note, does it every go well for the team when they sign a star winger in his late 20's for max term big AAV?

Gotta be careful with Rantanen's next contract.

Huberdeau and Gaudreau were as elite as it gets at 28 yo.

Third contracts at ANY position mean you’re buying decline years for sure.

Neither were ever on Rantanen's level, though.
That's extremely debatable, both finished 2nd in scoring in the whole league at the time of their signing. Rantanen has never finished a season that high.

Max term is usually a bad idea for teams. Which is why the Avs have smartly avoided it, outside of Nate and Landy who they had to give 8 years to.

Big UFA contracts (which Huberdeau basically was since he hadn't played there yet) are usually equally a bad idea.

You're guessing at how the player will fit into the team while investing big money and term in them. The best value you're gonna get is the first year or two, and it can take a year or two to properly build chemistry and start to fit in with a new team.

I bet Mikko doesn't get the max though. Probably gets 6 or 7 years.

Nate and Landy were 28 in the first year of their deal and Val was 27. Mikko will be 30 in the first year of his next deal. Toews deal takes him to 36/37 in his final year too.

35 or 36 you can potentially still be a decent player. 37 is pushing it. 38 is a bit too risky and seems to be the cutoff that the Avs and other teams try to avoid. That's one year deal territory.

Cale probably gets 8 though.

f*** off Edmonton. Would it kill you to win a damn game for once and keep the Stars from climbing up the Central.

That play at the end with the puck going around the boards and Bouchard taking his sweet time getting over was astonishing. Feels like Bouchard leads the league in lazy highlights. Sometimes he just can't be bothered to play hockey.

Has Vegas played any good teams yet? Seems like they’ve been playing all the bad to mediocre teams and all of them at home so far

Bouchard is astoundingly casual retrieving pucks in his own end, I mean, just look how easy he fell over in a key playoff game when JT Compher shoved him into the boards.

Not to diminish what JTC did there. He actually cared. Sometimes I wonder if Bouchard does.

Boy it’s a good thing the Leafs went out and got Ryan Reaves so that rats like Brad Marchand don’t try any bullshit that ends up with a Leafs player getting hurt, yes sir…
You clearly have never played hockey at a competitive level!!!! If you had you'd know that someone like Reaves or MacDermid prevent all those kinds of things!

I expect things will eventually regress to the norm, but nobody could've predicted Vancouver and Montreal being the 2 best Canadian teams 10 games into the season.
