Also, Blue Jackets have really whiffed on this head coach hire. He's made them better for sure, but he cares about wins at all costs above everything else including development.
A total freak accident. Horrible.
For as much as we love hockey, this isn't going to be the last skate to the throat incident, so I am not sure we can call it a "freak accident" at this point, though it might be another twenty to thirty years until the next time. And no, I don't think wearing the flimsy neck guards that the IIHF demands the WJC players to wear will protect anything. And yes, you're more likely to die of a heart attack in another sport like futball or basketball than this in hockey. However, there needs to be an invention to prevent this stuff from occurring. Look at Lauko's social media account and how close that skate was to his eye.

Oilers wish they could play Markstrom every game and he wishes he never played them
Yeah, I don't get it with Markstrom because he was the reason why it wasn't 7-0 for the Oilers in the first period, but some of the goals he lets in are MA Fleury type of weird. He's over-committed all the time, but not as flexible as Rinne was, but sort of is at the same time. He lost all that talent and was probably the goaler coach when he left the Canucks.

Ian Clark is an incredible goalie coach. Canucks went from a long term goalie graveyard to Clark then Allaire then Clark again giving them Lu/Schneider/Markstrom/Demko

Which is why you would call it a freak accident. Anyway. Awful.

Like Risto said. And given that skates around the head/neck area have happened but not this forcefully shows how unlikely it is. It was as close to deliberately shoving the skate blade into someone as you're ever likely to get.

I personally don't see it as a freak accident. Freak accidents to me are ones that werent predictable or foreseeable. Like a hockey player being crushed by a scoreboard falling on them. But this accident was entirely predictable and there have been numerous close calls before. Statistically speaking it probably should happen more than it does because of players crashing the crease etc. Sadly it also feels entirely preventable and I don't know why there's not some mandate for players to wear something like an undershirt with a turtleneck made from cut resistant fabric.

Halley's comet comes around every 76 years, but we don't call its flight path a "freak accident." Skates to the throat are an extremely rare occurrence so I agree with you and Ceremony in the beginning stages, nonetheless, it will not be the last time a skate-to-the-throat type of play will happen which can have a severe outcome as great as this, so something needs to be done if it can. And I am not talking about the specific type of play here that happened to Johnson, but all-around similar plays. Hockey is dangerous, but we don't want players to die as it will scare off parents for their children.

I haven't watched any of their games, and the stats are not that great, but from what I've understood Markstrom has actually been pretty good this season. At least he's giving them a chance to win every night, if only they could score goals.
Yah Markstrom isnt the problem with that team. Hes actually kept them in a bunch of games but the offense is putrid not to mention the D with Andersson suspended has been suspect.

I don't doubt his abilities but I also don't think goalie coaches had anything to do with Luongo or Schneider.
Schneider was always good at every level.

Rollie Melanson (mixed up him and Allaire earlier) reinvented Luongo’s game and play style in 10-11 though that revitalized his career by playing deeper in the net. That was all coaching and not the way he normally played. Naturally very talented great goalie but the groin injury took a toll and hindered his ability to play the way he liked

So the word seems to be Dorion (allegedly) lied to Vegas about Dadonov's trade list and the Sens are going to be punished for it. Wonder if new Sens ownership uses this as their way out.

I don't get it. It's not like they are not doing alright or that they have a garbage team. No reason not to go to the games.
Population is low, ticket prices are high and almost no corporations to buy them. This situation sure doesnt help Quebec city.

For a very small market that the NHL didn't want to go to, Jet fans should not take that team for granted. I know they got Thomson or whatever his name is as the billionaire minority owner so they should be okay. Their majority owner though is poor by franchise owner standards, so he might be the one to sell and that could be to another location if it isn't to Thomson.

- Panthers/Bruins was totally a playoff game, great hockey to watch.

- Penguins losing the way they did was effin' hilarious. I have some brethren who are huge Pen fans, so whenever they lose, it's a win in my book. That team is weird though, because they should've been up 6-1 by the third period, but nobody can capitalise on anything. They were by far the superior team, but Jarry gives them no confidence whatsoever nightly. Pittsburgh had two 5-on-3s in the game and in the second one Karlsson made a forced pass across, which got intercepted and passed to McTavish (he's a beast) coming out of the box who scored on a breakaway with 11 seconds left.

The vitriol being thrown around on Twitter over Adam Johnsons death, accusing the other guy of murder is absolutely disgusting man. So many openly racist comments without even pretending it's anything else.

Like I knew Twitter had gone way downhill since Musk took over but holy shit this terrible accident has really shed a light on just how f***ing disgusting that place is now.
