His contract ends the same day as Auston Matthews does.
Leafs might need the majority of Willy's current cap space to afford the Matthews raise.
It's also when the Muzzin and Brodie contracts end, and when the cap is going to start rising again - which is probably where the money will come from to re-sign both. We're also not going to pay Matthews anywhere close to 18.6m. That's not even allowed.

The Leafs only have to open up $3 million in cap space to get Matthews to nearly $15 AAV x 8.

For any other team to offer that kind of guaranteed money, they would have to open up $17 million x 7.

It's easy to see he won't be going anywhere. Well, easy for those of us with the requisite brain cells, and the lack of an agenda.

$15 AAV x 8 is him not even taking a discount if the cap is under 90 mill. He is getting top dollar.

We should consider a Nylander trade to bring in Askarov and set our goaltending up for the next decade. Nashville may listen due to Sarros being there and if we get get a Askarov + Tomasino for Nylander, it gives us the flexibility to fill our second line as well plus have enough flexibility to add in mid season.

I'm really high on Askarov.
What makes you believe that Askarov is available?

When he can sign the cap is projected to be still 85.5

NHL revenues were not on pace to pay
The deficit for 3 full years. Before a massive recession that has just started to hit Canada and the us

A 20% deal would be 17.1 million. There is no player that has taken that in about 15 years so that’s unlikely.

He probably signs for 15 million. That covers his 15% of the cap when it jumps to about 100 in day 5-6 years

He MAY just take a short deal of 3 years while the cap is low and wait to sign when it bumps.

I sure hope Leafs prioritizes the Hart trophy winner higher on their list. :)

I'd expect the Leafs to prioritize Matthews over every other person on the team - but ultimately don't think it will be an either-or situation between the two players, finding enough capspace likely won't be too much of an issue to cover both raises.

Tavares comes off the books the next season - meaning they would only need to maneuver a tighter cap situation for one season.

Interesting that post 35 goal season how LA was able to get Kempe for $5.5 million

TLN's take on the most recent draft: Reviewing the Maple Leafs’ 2022 NHL Draft class

TLDR:

Frazier Minton - Believes he was drafted because he's young and hasn't been playing hockey very long so he has more room to grow. Likely means he's more of a project player as well.

Nick Moldenhauer - This was one of the guys the Athletic was saying the Leafs could key in on so I recognize the name. He had a lot of freak injury issues in his draft year that hurt his stock - one was an illness of some sort and the other was getting a skate to the face.

Dennis Hildeby - Size and the fact that this is his second go around at the draft. Leafs believe his age means he's closer to a complete product. Andersen BTW is a re-entry guy.

Nikita Grebekin - Another re-entry guy.

Brandon Lisowsky - A guy who dropped quite a bit.

Common theme here: The Leafs are drafting guys who they think are being underrated due to other factors. Minton because of his age and inexperience at organized hockey, Moldenhauer due to injuries, Hildeby and Grebekin due to being re-entries.

Tavares out might mean keeping Matthews, Marner and Nylander by splitting his contract among the 3 new raises.

Before JT was signed originally, the plan was to use that cap space to re-sign the 3 amigos coming out of their ELC.

You might be right Leafs salary cap issues began with his signing, and so Leafs finally might get that cap relief when it expires.

Also long as Matthews is the priority the rest will sort itself out.

Tavares will extend with the Leafs, and likely retire here. It's probable he goes the Spezza route though, maybe not quite that cheap, but it's going to be discounted. (His next contract will not be an impediment on the big three)

Forsberg went from 6 million to 8.5.
Nylander is currently paid 7.5 with a cap hit of 6.9.

Then there is also internal structure. Are you going to accept 4 million less than the other guys when you are touted as 1 of the big 3 (or core 4)?

I doubt Nylander is satisfied with Dubas deciding now is the time he only wants to raise him 1 million. Can’t see Nylander at less than 9.5 in the Dubas cap. I would be looking to move him and Muzzin.

You don't think he'll sign a 7x11 at age 34?

I can agree with that take.

Hasn’t he been really bad in internatIonal tournaments?
