Seems every new contract makes some of our deals look better and better, but the next wave (Matty, Willie, Mitch) could get uglier.

Seems like a fair deal to me.
Wouldn't a 90 point player at his age earn more than 9?
Point got 9.5, Rants 9.25 after 90ish point campaigns.

I can't really find any players who got 9+ while averaging 65-70 points unless I include defencemen. That's where my comment comes from, 9m+ is usually reserved for guys above 1.00ppg. Barzal is sitting at .80 while having weak defensive performances, so obviously Lou see's 90pts on the horizon.

I think the Trotz era lower his totals a bit plus the deal is 8 years. Agreed though they obviously think he can bring more.
If Point or Rantanen signed today wouldn't they get more?

Yep.

Marner was considered the most overpaid player in the world, "LOL Dubas" when he signed for 10.9 x 6 after having a 94 point season where he was also strong defensively.

Barzal signs for 9.1 x 8 after a season where he paced for about 65 pts and was poor defensively, and the hockey world nods and claps for Lou.

It proves that all things Leafs just get looked at through a lens of negativity, even by a lot of our own fans. People on the mainboards last year were laughing about Bunting being on the 1st line, now they are dooming us saying he's going to walk and get paid somewhere else - isn't that a positive thing? Getting 2 years out of a sub 1m contract? Nope, because it's us.

Will be curious to see if this plays out. Been hearing about the Trotz effect for a long time. Could be? We could see Barzal explode for 100pts this season. He's 25 now so it would be around when you would expect him to take that next step.

9 + mil is an overpay for Barzals production, especially considering he's supposed to be the teams go to guy for offense (got 70% + Offensive zone starts last season). The team likely sees the most important part of the contract as getting a long term commitment from the player, which is fair enough. Wouldn't call it a good deal for the team, but if he scores more away from Trotz it's fine.

I don’t think many see Arizona as a reasonable option for him. LA, Vegas, etc are far more realistic if he decides to leave.
LA is the only other real option. Vegas doesn't have the cap

Even then, we're the only team that can be a contender and pay him what he wants. He's worked into our cap structure and gets to maximize his stats as much as possible beside Mitch. Doesn't make a ton of sense to leave imo

Vegas had a path to signing him which would have been the perfect fit for him and the NHL and they completely screwed it up.

Vegas mismanaged their entire situation imo, went too star heavy and got away from what made them great in the first place
I watched some of almost every one of their games during that inaugural season and it was one of best sports stories I’ve ever witnessed.

Under that oof that coached last them year they were unwatchable so hopefully Cassidy can turn them around.

I don’t believe that. I believe that any team would make space for him or McDavid.
Yes it won’t be easy but they’ll figure it out.

I don’t think he’ll leave, they’ll re-sign him as soon as they are able.
