It's the robot umps discussion but kinda worse. Do you want it perfect, or do you want it relatively right with a human element?

Egregious offisides that actually affect the play are usually called in real time, linesmen are by and large fantastic. these hair splitting 'well his blade was 2 in offsides and he didn't touch the puck but a goal was scored 45s later' is not the 'intent' of the rule imo.

I like video reviews in general for direct scoring plays like interference and high stick but it should not be a thing for offsides.

I don't actually have a problem with this specific instance though. The Sharks challenged a goal, and the video review stuck with the call on the ice and assessed a delay of game penalty.

As for the play itself, nobody is actually touching the puck inside the zone until everyone is onside. Its an odd play, but I think it fits the spirit of the rule in regards to delayed offside/touching up.

I'm pretty sure the offsides rule does not require the offsides team to touch the puck. Any attempt to play the puck or an attempt to engage/defend the opponent that has the puck is enough.

Friedman and Marek talking about Provorov likely being on the move at some point soon on 32 Thoughts. I think he’s worth a swing at 25% retained as he’d be cheaper to acquire than Chychrun.

He's the right age, and while it makes more sense to move Risto or Deangelo, they just acquired them recently. He's decent value even at his cap hit so I would be a bit surprised if Philly actually did this.

Hell I would go after him with no retention. Probably have to include Iafallo for salary, which I think would be a big loss for LA.

nothing Philly does should be surprising...i disagree with alot of what they do, but with Fletcher it is not surprising. I think even the most avid Blake hater should agree it would be worse with Fletcher.

You're correct in that attempting to engage an opponent during a delayed offside will result in a whistle, but otherwise the rule specifically mentions touching the puck. It's completely legal to stand over a puck that has crossed into the zone with your toe on the line while you wait for a teammate to touch up so long as you don't make contact with the puck inside the zone or engage an opponent.

From the 2021-22 rulebook, it talks about controlling the puck. Not touching the puck.

quite the haul

It's really funny to see where I live appearing on LA Kings HFboards. Heh.

If those kinds of assets were spent, I was hoping for Bedard. A lot of CHL teams are going all in this year. Memorial cup is being played in Kamloops this year, so it's understandable making a big push.

imagine the haul they'd get for bedard if he wanted to be moved.

From the 2021-22 rulebook, it talks about controlling the puck. Not touching the puck.

That's referring to when the puck carrier himself enters the zone before the puck, and states that he is not offside so long as he has control. This was put into the rule book to get rid of offside calls that were occurring when a puck carrier would skate into the zone while protecting the puck and their skates would cross first. I believe we had a call like this go against us though when a puck was flipped in the air and hit Trevor Moore(?) outside the zone, he crossed into the zone, gathered the puck, and scored but it was waived off because he preceded the puck into the zone and although he had touched the puck (in the air) outside the zone he was not deemed in control of the puck.

But in the Anaheim instance the puck carrier is still outside the zone after the puck has crossed, so that paragraph doesn't apply. What's relevant is the delayed offside rules -

83.3 Delayed Off-side – A situation where an attacking player (or players)
has preceded the puck across the attacking blue line, but the
defending team is in a position to bring the puck back out of its
defending zone without any delay or contact with an attacking player,
or, the attacking players are in the process of clearing the attacking
zone.
If an off-side call is delayed, the Linesman shall drop his arm to
nullify the off-side violation and allow play to continue if:
(i) All players of the offending team clear the zone at the same instant
(skate contact with the blue line) permitting the attacking players to
re-enter the attacking zone, or
(ii) The defending team passes or carries the puck into the neutral zone.
If, during the course of the delayed off-side, any member of the
attacking team touches the puck, attempts to gain possession of a
loose puck, forces the defending puck carrier further back into his own
zone, or who is about to make physical contact with the defending
puck carrier, the Linesman shall stop play for the off-side violation

So the argument is really is he attempting to gain possession of the loose puck....which yeah....he certainly wants the puck and he's right above it, so I'd take no issue if the league decided that he was attempting to gain possession and therefore ruled the play offside. However, you can also argue that he's still outside the zone, waiting for his teammate to touch up before entering the zone or playing the puck himself so I take no issue with this being allowed either. Either way this is the 2nd time I've seen this ruling this season.

But the point of my first post was on the discussion of video review vs allowing for human error. In this specific event, the call on the ice was good goal and the video review confirmed it, was consistent with reviews on similar plays earlier in the season, and the team that unsuccessfully challenged was assessed a delay of game penalty. Ultimately, I take no issue with this sequence of events and think this is a positive example of rule enforcement.

Injured or not the guy gets 'hurt' and leaves like every god damn game.

The more I watch, the more impressed I am with his offensive abilities and less impressed I am with his defense and ability to just skate a normal shift without worrying about getting a bruise form a stick check.
Right now he’s jumping at every opportunity because he knows its in his best interest to get out of that clusterf*** organization. He has to be aware that pumping his numbers might entice a team to pull the trigger.

I would be afraid to know what he did in the past to earn all of this injury karma.

yup, he is taking risks he may not necessarily take if he were playing for a playoff team, or anyone other team really.

Maybe, but like I said in the trade thread, i suspect the dissonance is between his trade value and what they're making his trade value appear to be.

IE everyone things they're getting a surefire low-end 1D/great 2D that can play all situations but in reality he's got more in common with Klingberg than with Muzzin. He's getting some of the cushiest minutes I've ever seen, both team and player are juicing his offensive numbers and I just don't know if that kind of play is 'realistic' expectations for a receiving team that's looking for a high-end TWD.

maybe he can rein it in sure but it's hard to take that risk on his play AND his injury history.

Wild stat that I just calculated: NHL teams are spending almost $75 million ($74,960,386) on players outside the NHL, either because of buyouts, cap recaptures, or burying guys in the minors.

Phaneuf is living the life. Getting paid by two different teams to sit on ass.

The majority of that stuff is guys buried in the minors, and really overall that's not too crazy of a value. It's .027 of the total cap spent by all teams.

We always say things like "waive the guy, buy him out, etc." but it really illustrates just how much teams avoid doing things like that.
