So what if the same anonymous tweet is floated on the eve of game seven of the finals for whoever the best player is they should sit out? How about when the same anonymous unsubstantiated tweet gets released against an entire team? Do they all get suspended while the investigation goes on? It’s easy to deny people due process when it’s one or two. It’s not so easy when it’s widespread. You have to treat everyone the same. I’m struggling with unsubstantiated anonymous tweets being used as a weapon by overzealous fans.

I think you’re confusing things. Why would they need to treat everyone the same? This allegation is coming on the heels of one of the biggest sex scandals in the sport’s history. It was in the beginning of the year and was made against a bottom pair D who just joined the team. The investigation was concluded quickly and they’re moving on.

The situations you suggested are vastly different - including because this incident has just happened. This incident seems like a hoax - I think that informs of the NHL views future anonymous, unsubstantiated posts on social media.

Equal protection requires they be treated the same but what I suggest is the same. An anonymous unsubstantiated tweet with specific and awful sex abuse allegations. Maybe I misstated it but the point is the Cole was suspended for a single anonymous tweet. If you support that you have to do the same thing for anyone at which point I could tweet something under a burner account and have the best player on Anaheim suspended for thr next game. I just don’t think that’s workable .

Not sure if this was your intention, but basically you're implying Cole isn't good enough to deserve the same due process as a star player in that scenario.

If the anonymous tweeter was unwilling to come forward, I have no idea what the NHL's investigation even was? Ask Cole some questions? Ask his teammates some questions? The whole thing smelled of PR damage control and I guess that's better than nothing? But it does set a precedent that the league will not be happy to follow potentially in the future.

Just bring this thread back onto the ice, but.....

Zacha with 3 points in 2 games.

And it would be easy to brush off a strong season by Zacha if we were playing well, but if he has a good year while we stink? That's going to add to the frustration.

Greer also with 3points. I liked him, but we didn't have room for him.

Montgomery was a great hire for them, we’re stuck with the worst coach in the league

Wait I forgot Hakstol somehow has a job, okay 2nd worst

Presumably they hire an investigator to identify the Twitter poster and conduct some interviews with former teammates. If the allegations were true it wouldn’t be hard to get someone to say something and Cole would still be sitting while a wider investigation takes place. I’m not excusing him or saying he’s innocent. I’m just saying an anonymous unsubstantiated tweet is a very low bar to underpin a suspension. Why turn league suspensions over to the public?

I know we love to hate on Ruff, but he's had a solid career as a coach.
Has Ruff been a great coach thr last ten or so years? The game has changed and maybe he hasn’t kept up?

Yeah, I don't think we have the worst coach in the league, that's a stretch.

Look at all the losers that are employed. Hakstol, Eakins, Quinn (the Sharks should still be lottery warriors), then there's plenty of guys we just don't know enough about yet that are either too new or just coach really bad teams.

I think every fanbase that's team is bad (just like with the bad goalies) think they have the worst head coach in the league.

That doesn't mean that Ruff hasn't run his course here, effective the end of last season. Over half the league has already made at least one head coaching change since Ruff was hired by the Devils. I would say he's gotten enough time here.

I’m not exactly saying he wasn’t good enough, but I am saying that every situation is unique.

There’s no particular advantage to one team when Cole is accused at three beginning of the year. If Stamkos or Kuch are accused before game 7 of the SCF? Very different.

The NHL doesn’t have to treat these situations the same because they aren’t. Players are not equal. Timing is not equal. And history / context is not equal.

Just him getting a Championship-ANYTHING is a joke in itself.
Yeah I agree with that but hey that’s the owners money so be it. His name on the cup is another thing. Also is this a legit ring not like a lower version of the ring that we will see on pawn stars in a few years?

Yeah thanks to Hasek and Miller, he’s clueless these days
Same could he said about Lou

Don’t know I guess what’s stopping people from giving players food poising before an important game? Tampa had a brand and image to maintain and have a right to protect it as they see fit. Cole still got paid I think and it was over pretty quick he should hire an investor and Go after this person I’m sure there’s a way to do that if it was a hoax. I mean if you have a babysitter that’s made questionable life choices like cole and you get an anonymous tip they are a pedophile you still going to have that dinner out or maybe investigate a little?

I mean your the one throwing out these crazy what ifs Lol. Game 7 playoffs the entire team is randomly accused of assault lol uh context please.
You are resorting to attacking the example rather than the point. Look I get it. You think it’s ok to suspend a player based on an anonymous tweet without names. That’s your choice. It’s a difficult issue. All I’m saying is if you do it once you have to do it every time. We will see what happens. I doubt this is the last time this comes up.

I’m really not attacking it it’s just super extreme and super stupid no offense. But like I said yes If in the playoffs someone accuses the entire team of abuse I think we can kinda see how it would be viewed differently then Ian cole before the season starts. It doesn’t have to be a broad extreme as you make it seem.

Not as stupid as what you are suggesting. If you hadn’t suggested what you did my example wouldn’t have been floated but sure I’m the idiot. You don’t refute the example you just say it’s bad. You don’t say it can’t happen and you don’t address how you’d handle it. What you don’t admit is that the bad example can only happen in the context you provide. At least come up with a distinction rather than just resorting to ad hominem attack.

You should have started with Geersten as an example and worked your way up until it became "extreme."

Ian cole, first games of the season? Yea suspend.

Tyler Bozak, mid December? Most likely should suspend.

Nazim Kadri, late February? Ehh I don't know, depending on the wording

Mcdavid, playoffs? Don't be stupid and extreme.

If someone has a line they draw about when and with who they will take action against due to anonymous accusations, you can't give them an out by starting with an extreme example, you gotta get in the grey for them to realize how muddy their stance actually is when laid out.

Yeah it's a slippery slope is the point. I don't think Tampa should have felt compelled to suspend him based on a completely anonymous, unverified report but they likely wouldn't have done so if we weren't talking about games 1-3 of an 82 game season.

Now if they did have some way of verifying details and found any part of it was true then yeah suspend his ass indefinitely.

The problem is you can’t let who the player is or what gane it is dictate what happens. Why does a star player or an important game matter? Equal protection and due process apply to everyone.

I'm fine with however well Zacha plays this year. It was time to move on from him in NJ, he just didn't have a great fit in the lineup.

He's riding shotgun with Patrnak and Krejci right now, while Marchand is out. That's a nice spot for him to pad some stats while he can.

When Marchand is back, he'll be bumped down and out of the top-six.

Lol you really think an entire team being accused of assault totally anonymous before a big playoff game is the same as a player with questionable life choices before the season even starts. Hey more power to you good luck with that thinking. But yeah sure to answer your question if an entire team is out of the blue is accused of assault then by all means delay the game while it’s investigated. I dunno about you guys but I would feel weird rooting for a team in this case that was accused of assault and ended up being true. But hey that’s just me
