Hyman makes like 5 times what Bunting does. Bunting +45 vs Hyman +7. Whopping roughly 15 extra points over 2 years (but way more pucks in Hyman’s net).Hyman doesn't cheat and sacrifice offense for defense and plays a solid 2-way game because he always gives 120% every shift.
Aren't many Leaf forwards with a better +/- and on the ice for less goals against at even strength.
John Tavares has a $11 mil cap hit (= 2 X Hyman @ $5.5. mil) and is a -1 +/- so how much defense for offense is he sacrificing for 20 goals and 46 points?
You will never talk sense into that fanbase. They still think the West is stronger than the East. Heck one poster was chirping Leafs fans and never even realized Leafs were doing better than the Oilers. Never met one with common sense.I'm getting a good laugh at the Oiler fans trying so hard to make a case for us to regret not re-signing Hyman. We all liked Hyman but would have been pissed if Dubas made the necessary accommodations to the roster to fit in Hyman's pay raise. I liked Hyman a lot but really don't miss him, Bunting provides a spark Hyman never could. Oiler fans can't just be happy that Hyman's doing well, they think they really have one over on us - as they turn a blind eye to the standings and Toronto and Edmonton's place in it.
Oiler lurkers - we don't miss Hyman, not even a bit. We liked him fine and he earned his pay day, enjoy our cast offs. How's Jack btw? Be nice, he's a dear and we like him a lot back in the Hockey Mecca

I guess the debate comes down to if you prefer more talent with less productivity or less talent with more hard work but with more productivity.Hyman wasn’t on the top PP because others were paid more than him, it’s because they are superior offensive players.
There was room for both, Hyman would be a good add right now. It was always the length that was the question, especially with his injuries.I'm getting a good laugh at the Oiler fans trying so hard to make a case for us to regret not re-signing Hyman. You should love Bunting then.I guess the debate comes down to if you prefer more talent with less productivity or less talent with more hard work but with more productivity.
I'm a firm believer in will and hard work beats skill particular in the playoffs.
Willy Nylander is having a breakout year and sits 15th in scoring and Hyman sits 11th in OA scoring with both players having 19 PP points.

Willy is pushing for a big raise up from $7 mil and Hyman was too expensive to keep at $5.5 mil.
PS. Zach Hyman was my favourite Leaf when he was here because I admired his hard work and effort nightly.
The problem is not Hyman, it’s that Matthews, Marner, Nylander and the signing of Johnny Marleau took too much of the cap space. They lost continuity and are still paying for it. Hyman would be perfect for the Leafs.I'm getting a good laugh at the Oiler fans trying so hard to make a case for us to regret not re-signing Hyman. Yeah, isn't it terrible to sign great players so they can't afford to overspend on merely good ones? The problem is Hyman it’s that Matthews, Marner, Nylander and the signing of Johnny Marleau took too much of the cap space. By that logic, Tavares makes double Hyman's money...
I think its fair to say we miss Hyman the player and person, but we've also adequately replaced most of his attributes by committee.
And not to mention it's safe to say even offensivly Hyman is likely having an outlier season at the moment.
Fantastic for him to have a career year, but at 31 years old next season he's likely back to being a 50ish point player.
Yeah we just wish it was here. And not to mention it's safe to say even offensivly Hyman is likely having an outlier season at the moment.

Uh, that’s literally what the post you are responding to was quoting?By that logic, Tavares makes double Hyman's money...

Speaking of playoffs Hyman had 11 goals in 16 playoff games last year, for reference the entire Leafs core 4 had 12 goals combined.Hyman's going to produce so long as he's on the PP with McDavid and Draisaitl
Should be interesting to see how his play keeps up into his 30's .. if he loses a step that will be tough.
What's most frustrating is that we knew Hyman played the type of game that would be great in the playoffs.. but he never performed with the Leafs .. yes he had injuries and stuff .. but still.
Anyway, he would have this much success on the Leafs.. that's for sure.

You have to wonder if Hyman only had 2-3 goals would Leafs have beaten TB.
As you say Hyman is the perfect style of player that Leafs could use come playoff time.
His success on the Oilers goes beyond just McDavid alone, and its the opportunies he is give like #1 PP time which Leafs never gave him.. So do we know he couldn't do this on Leafs PP had he gotten to play with Matthews and Marner and Nylander etc?
You have to admit 50 games into a season seeing Hyman having more points than any one of our Maple Leafs including the ones making $11 mil and tied for 11th overall in NHL scoring with Sidney Crosby is quite amazing to see,
It's funny that Hyman was never really popular in the early days and was often derided as "Babcock's Son" and seen as unworthy of getting prime time minutes with Matthews and Nylander.
Hyman was actually always popular and well liked. What the Leafs fans didn't like including me was his role. He wasn't a good optimal initially with Matthews. Especially considering back in 2016 we still had JVR, Marleau, Kapanen and others
Hyman game has evolved since. No doubt. But we had a lot of good options
I'll never understand why JVR didn't play a single shift with Matthews
I think a lot of people hated Babcock, so his decisions were rarely exceptedI feel like there was a lot of resentment towards Hyman’s utilization in the early years. Remember we went up against Boston in 2018 and 2019 and they always had the stacked Perfection Line and people always looked at Hyman and felt he was an unworthy passenger.
