I feel like there was a lot of resentment towards Hyman’s utilization in the early years. Remember we went up against Boston in 2018 and 2019 and they always had the stacked Perfection Line and people always looked at Hyman and felt he was an unworthy passenger.

Babcock spread out his lines too thin. He tried to have four lines that can attack. He also wanted Hyman to almost babysit Matthews

We had decent line up. A lot of people wanted others to get an opportunity to play with Matthews.

Many times other teams would leave Hyman alone. Even now they do. But Connor is Connor. He fights through and finds a way.

Problem with Hyman in his time here was that he scored maybe 5? goals in tight that weren’t along the surface of the ice. He simply could not lift the puck in tight despite getting the most high danger chances in the league or close to it.

The problem with his contract is that his knees have taken a lot of damage already and if he loses speed and strength on his feet he’s going to be an overnight anchor. If you take away his ability to be first on the puck, his ability to pin and hold it on the boards, and his ability to fight for position in front of the net, what are you really left with? Maybe he’a healthy for the duration of his contract and it’s never an issue, but that’s a hard gamble to take at that pricepoint.

When they say the modern athlete is in better shape…. RIP

Babcock’s spreading it out might have worked better with the core today. They’re firmly in their primes now and can probably carry those accessory line mates.

Hyman has a different role in Edmonton. Here he went into the corners and dug the puck out for Matthews.

In Edmonton, McDavid has the puck all the time. All the attention is on McDavid. Hyman is usually the recipient of a open net pass from MvDavid for tap ins.

Speaking of playoffs Hyman had 11 goals in 16 playoff games last year, for reference the entire Leafs core 4 had 12 goals combined.

You have to wonder if Hyman only had 2-3 goals would Leafs have beaten TB.

As you say Hyman is the perfect style of player that Leafs could use come playoff time.

His success on the Oilers goes beyond just McDavid alone, and its the opportunies he is give like #1 PP time which Leafs never gave him.. So do we know he couldn't do this on Leafs PP had he gotten to play with Matthews and Marner and Nylander etc?

You have to admit 50 games into a season seeing Hyman having more points than any one of our Maple Leafs including the ones making $11 mil and tied for 11th overall in NHL scoring with Sidney Crosby is quite amazing to see,
The last time you carried over player stats without context you suggested the Leafs would be an 86 pt team this year due to their goaltending.

I had it as Engvall, Minten, first and likely a second or third to offset the value in picks @willmma

NYi is 10th in the conference for pts% and 19th overall. Leafs are 4th in both (hilarious the west doesn't change it) for context, so the firsts are pretty different.

Yeah there's an offset in picks. As a cap dump Beauviller has the extra year in cap hit which is more of a negative than a pending UFA in Kerfoot or Engvall who Vancouver could flip though.
