I have to say, I am so impressed by the season Ovechkin is having. I always thought Crosby was clearly better than him and OK, I still do but the gap is less than I thought it was. I just can't say enough about how impressed I am, totally blown away!

Jagr is hanging on for dear life for 3rd overall in all time goal leaders

It’ll be cool to see how close he can get to Gretzky.

Nothing to take away from Ovechkin, he's truly is a great player but Crosby's case injuries have really caught up to him

The consensus now seems to be that he will catch him. He's a special player, no doubt about it!

Yeah he might not catch Crosby but for me, he's moving up on the all-time greats list for sure. Not that those things really matter but I more or less see Crosby as 5th all-time and Ovechkin, I really don't know where to put him but I do think it's safe to say he's moving up and where he'll be when he's ready to retire (if he ever does), is far from clear.

I think it is very hard to surpass the BIG 4, Howe, Orr, Wayne and Mario.
Lots of players can make their case at No.5 for me, Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, Lidstorm..just to name a few.

Ovechkin is the greatest power winger of all time (sorry Rocket Richard). I mean it's insane that he still plays like a wrecking ball at 36. How has he not broken down? He seems like he's still got the coordination of a 20 year old.

I agree the top 4 is pretty clear and who's number 5 is less clear. For me it's Crosby but I can understand people saying Jagr, Hull, Lidstrom and so on and I guess it's hard to say that Ovechkin is completely out of it at this point as well. I would leave goalies out of the discussion though, not because they're not worthy but because it's impossible to compare them to skaters. Hell it's hard enough to compare forwards to Dmen.

It is insane. Apparently there are a number of teams who don't even have a forward as old as him on the team and the way he's playing, it's not inconceivable that he even wins the Hart this season. I'm beyond impressed and I hope he keeps it up for some time yet, the longer the better as far as I'm concerned. Such a great 8 story, great for the game of hockey!

Cross era comparisons are so tough, especially in hockey in the last 40 years .. From the high scoring 80's to the dead puck era, to the post lockout seasons.

IMO Ovi is the game's greatest goal scorer of all time. It would be really cool to see him cement that by surpassing Gretzky to make it undoubted. Considering the differences in eras, it would be undoubtedly remarkable.

That being said happy to have Gretzky hold the record because his dominance is just unbelievable.
